Hello. This channel is for diary videos telling you about the resto-modification of my 1968 Aston Martin DBS which now has a Jaguar AJ16 engine. The engine swap was done before I got the car, but I have spent the last 8 years (2016-2024) restoring and modernising it with a total nut-and-bolt makeover.

Good job! Love the space around the engine.
😂😂😂I didn't expect the dame Judi impersonation 👏👏👏
There are more characters in my other videos. Next one may involve a cat and a bald cap!
Incidentally the Android player (www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002272180930.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.253.30381802XKXSG6) has a dedicated power booster: www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003988425726.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.143.30381802XKXSG6 to raise the power to 4 X 47w. The wheel controller is www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001953878409.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.243.30381802XKXSG6 Hope that helps someone.
Hi Andrew, very informative. Can you advise where you got the Traffolyte panel made. Also where did you get the rear view mirror from, can you post a link please.
For Traffolyte I used John Walton Engraving www.traffolytelabels.co.uk/contact/ I have also experimented with lacquering with 2k lacquer over the top and the result is fantastic! just like piano black in modern cars (and pianos of course). The rear view mirror is from aliexpress www.aliexpress.com/item/32805690206.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.258.30381802XKXSG6 and is just £66 + vat.
A hot rodded Aston Martin? Whoa. Impressive. I built a TR-4 with a Chrysler engine, transmission and rear diff. Four wheel disc, all braided lines, Konis and Brembo.
Illuminating and witty commentary
I had to mention it as it looked rather odd.
Didn't mention the steering wheel and the silly red stripe. Surely on tarmac there's no problem finding where the wheels should be pointing? An irritating Mercedes affectation nicked from the US. Lovely colour and boot spoiler. One hell of a restomod. Well done.
Perhaps I should have mentioned although there is not time to mention everything - The leather wheel has been recovered in black (without any marker) and what you see is just protection to keep the new leather pristine while I work on the car. The red marker is there simply so I know when the wheels are pointing ahead and to help with moving the car around the workshop when needed.
Love it
For what it's worth, the DB7 engine was a development of a TWR development of the AJ16.
Love the colour! Personally I wouldn't go for leather on the dashtop as it will be vulnerable to the effects of heat and sunlight through the front screen, which is of course the same reason manufacturers shied away and used vinyl. As far as the lower panels are concerned, matching the seats is the best approach to do but you might want to think about the areas where they are most vulnerable to shoe marks and scrapes and use black vinyl or carpet instead.
I did say I won't be using leather on the dash-top but vinyl instead. The colour is a Chrysler paint as used on the Crossfire and always receives compliments.
Great Job , what Engine and Gearbox have you got in the DBS?
You need to watch my other videos for all your answers. Part 2 covers the engine: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2Wum9OsZJSuhZM.html Part 1 covers the whole concept: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c5OVzdRxeJWWm7w.html. Thanks for watching.
I believe the cam cover breather pipe also connects to the crankcase.
@@larumpole Thanks you. Luckily the builder of the car (the previous owner who did the conversion) has been in touch and is on the case with me.
Attention according to Schlaboubve laws in EU soon All Gas cars will illegal soon
Your car, build it your way. I like it too.
Too right! Thanks
Beautiful work, the installation is fantastic
love victor ...
love the fliptail
yo didnt consider the fold out radio screen for the sat nav ?
No, as when you extend it out it would then block off the heater controls.
that dark would already looks good
lovely car
Excellent work

Looks tasty. Seems a waste to drain the mushroom juice into the sink. I would save that to use in my cooking.
You're right. Perhaps I'll put it in the gravy next time. 😊 Do try making it though, it's even tastier than it looks.
"Even if you have an expensive paint job...Tom...."😂😂😂😂
You can buy these from Mercedes, same mirror as w115 uses. Fitted to mine 20 odd years ago.
Yes, this is a Mercedes Benz item for W114 & W115 ref 0001-114 for left side. I got my pair from Classic Mercedes Parts Belgium (€204.86 [the pair] in 2019) but in the US there is Authentic Classics, Staten Island (from whom I got the plastic gaskets). Classic Aston Martin dealers source from classic MB dealers and then double the price (of course)!
Note* After you put tape around the threads of the mounting bolts (3:20), just check that the bolts still pass through the holes in the door. If you put too much tape on you will have a sticky problem when it comes to presenting the mirror and the bolts won't go into the door!
Hahaha and i thought you will do videon how to repair the bage???? Once i foot the dosh for a new bage it will last 20 years anyway.
That is the point. When (or if) you buy a new badge it will not last 20 years because of the design flaw of it being hollow and it being stressed by the pre-tension in the fixing bolts and that stress leading to cracking the enamel which becomes more brittle with age. All you have to do is put just a little too much torque on a fixing nut when fitting and 'crack', it's ruined. Also, in any event, I am planning on this car looking good for a lot more than 20 years!
Beautiful car
Those original A-M mirrors are actually (shock horror!) Mercedes items (much cheaper from M-B than AM) so maybe they can be excused from fitting zer Englisch Auto? ;-) The filler thing is a great tip! Thanks.
"Promosm" 😝
Spam. No thank you!
Great idea with applications to many other classic cars. Thank you!
Cunningly clever
I would have used a flexible epoxy that would be 0.2mm slightly proud being the way it slightly expands in the middle. This would provide strength around the posts and make is very slightly proud and hence will also protect the paint. I do really like your video and method. These ideas I can used on my Jensen Interceptor. Best of all I Iove your Aston. Your idea for the mirror is very clever and I will def do this, as these mirrors never really fit. Please what make and model of mirror are you using. Cheers 🙂
That would work. What is great is to think about these things and find a solution that works for you and not just to just accept the standard way if you think you can see a better way! 😊
The mirrors are Mercedes Benz W114/W115. Go to a MB Classic seller not AM.
Brilliant help, in those days did Mercedes have driver and passenger glass mirrors, so if I am in UK, do I need to buy UK mirrors or will European mirrors work in the UK RHD please.@@AndrewDay_Aston-Martin-DBS5126
Go steady, car body filler is porous so may cause problems down the line if it were to hold water
Another great video, thanks Andrew! Your findings can be applied to any DB era Aston, as the DB4 body badges also suffer from the poor fitment. Perhaps post on the AMOC Forum? Any video with old Basil Fawlty in it has my gratitude. So sorry about him, he's from Barcelona...
In the midst of purchasing a DBS without an engine- looking to transplant a Barra engine into this car. The Barra engine is an Australian built Ford engine from 2002- 4L 6 cylinder engine.
Good luck with that. If the deal goes through do please get in touch to join up with the 'DBS Chums' contact [email protected]. Replacement AM 6cyl and V8 engines can be found still, but a replacement engine could be cheaper. You'll need some support no doubt!
Shame about the V8, it is part of the magic of these cars, very nice looking car though.
Which transmission are you going to use, manual or auto, as the original Jaguar unit if auto will be electronic control?
The transmission and clutch is a 5 speed manual from an XJS. I hope the clutch will be up to the new specs as the previous owner has suggested a racing clutch might be a good upgrade.
That sounds just perfect. Yes I agree with your comments on the dash and the use of vinyl for a car quite expensive compared to others in the 1960s and 70s.@@AndrewVanDay
Hi Andrew, currently restoring 1971 Dbs, came across this and would like to exchange info with other restorers, dropped an email but may go into spam, budgetpallet..thanks, Stuart.
Great start. I have a 1973 V8 so its great to see more detail on these cars. Out of interest which security system did you use? Thanks
A stupefying and incredible amount of work. You would have to be the most dedicated DBS owner in the world. Seems like a sensible engine swap, and the rest of the modifications subjective. One question though, if you will not have a spare, why do you need an electric jack? ;) Terrific job. I am all for the pursuit of the kind of quality that you are aiming for. Fishoilene in the boxed sections of the bodywork. Best of luck for this monumental project that obviously and admirably does not have venality as its raison d'etre. Thanks for the video.
Looks comprehensive. Good mods as the car was, as you noted, quite changed from original factory spec anyway.

Interesting. My first time at this channel but as an Aston Martin DBS fan I had to click the link that popped up on my YT feed. Andrew, I feel your pain. I'm in the last 3 weeks or so of a full mechanical restoration of my modern classic and have just been through all the ups and downs, highs and lows that it involves. Best of luck with your build. Thanks for posting! Subscribed to see how it turns out.
Thanks. I wouldn't say pain exactly, I love doing the work and I shall be both sad and happy when it's all over. Thanks for for the encouragement and good luck with your project👍 (are making a video?)
Not a content creator. I'm sure certain JDM loving fans would be interested but I have no plans to publish a video(s) of the build...could use a good content creator by my side i think ;)@@AndrewDay_Aston-Martin-DBS5126
Amazing!! Merry Christmas Andrew and fellow chums!
change the pulley size on the supercharger
Interesting - would you like to expand on that? Is that how AM got more out of this engine than Jaguar?
@@AndrewDay_Aston-Martin-DBS5126 the engines are similar but not identical. i assume the mapping of the car makes a big difference.
I just had a look and I don't think the pully could be any smaller than it is.
do any of the modern aston engines fit >
The DB7 of course, but I wouldn't dream of trying a V12!
i would still prefer a v8
roll the wheel arches
great job, well done
