    Don’t see the point of pellet testing in the wind. It was obvious from the video that it was blowing harder when testing some pellets than others and funnily enough the pellets with the tighter groups were the ones shot when the wind was blowing less. And also in windy conditions be the nature of the pellet being heavier it will usually group better due to it having less effect on it from the wind. Perhaps try this again indoors as the results will be noticeably different. Also, as the ghost has variable power adjustment try turning the power wheel down or up a few numbers. Some pellets that don’t group as well on max power group brilliantly on one or two numbers lower. Pellet testing is as much about finding the right pellet for the barrel as it is finding the right speed to shoot the pellet at… try different pellet head sizes too. You may find that ur best pellet is one that shoots better on power setting lower than max with a head size you wouldn’t normally shoot.

    Thanks for your comments. Tackling the wind is an important part of HFT so I need to know how the pellets I choose perform outside where I do 99.9% of my shooting. I really don't enjoy shooting inside! I'm already planning to test different power levels with the ghost as mentioned in a previous video. 🙂👍

    I don't disagree with you, but it is a matter of different barrels, different results. Some barrel are not pellet picky, others are. My one 5.5mm pcp is very pellet picky. It shoots H&N 18gr pellets very good, other pellets including JSB not so good. Also, certain H&N batches are definitely better than others. Even if I use the better batch pellets, on longer distances sorting by head size makes a BIG difference in this pcp. Sorting by weight not so much.

    I totally agree; different barrels will perform differently. One of the things I'm trying to get across is that you have to check things out for yourself and not just believe what's said online and on social media. Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍

    I featured one of these couple of yrs ago, was solid built like a tank, was happy with the build of the gun , but after about 170 shots it started making a ringing sound after every shot , then I noticed over the chrono it was down to 9 ft lbs , so I took it back to the shop , and they refunded me, and said that it must have been a faulty batch cos they’d had a few returned ,, people in the no, got intouch and said I should have stripped it , debured ,, spelling ,,, etc , cheers shane

    I enjoyed watching this test with the heavies, but I think I've come across a pellet that you didn't try, yet could outdo the JSB's, they are the Webley AccuMAX at 10.65 grain. I was very surprised with those through both my BSA R10se and HW100kt. How about trying the JSB against the AccuMAX in another vid?

    I have a backwards question. I use a Diana Chaser CO2 pistol to "convince" pigeons to stay off my roof. What are the slowest pellets? Specifically pellets that slow down the quickest? If I miss a pigeon on my roof (10-20 yds) the pellet continues an unknown distance. What I would like to find is a pellet formed like a badminton shuttle. Quick for a little bit, then slows dramatically. Is there such a thing?

  • @hftshooter
    @hftshooter6 күн бұрын

    That's the opposite of what pellets are designed to do. I don't know whether waddcutter pellets will behave that way? Pest controllers often use a lower power for short range pigeons, especially in barns.

  • @VegasMikeP229
    @VegasMikeP2296 күн бұрын

    @@hftshooter Agree, hence the question. I'm presently using wadcutters (Meisterkugeln .177 Professional Line in 7.0 gm) and they do fine for accuracy but in a suburb, I'd like to find a way to limit the travel. If I use the rifle barrel on the Diana Chaser, it's more accurate as it's faster but a miss means a pellet going quite a ways. No idea how far that is. There is no power control on the Diana so either I modify the CO2 valve or buy another gun. Anyway, thanks for the response.

    Are all these pellets the same skirt size, as this can affect the way the pellet travel’s down the rifling in the barrel. I find my AA410 carbine prefers small skirts of exactly 4.50 in 177 calibre, tested 11 different pellets and all the 4.51 and 4.52 skirt types performed less well.

  • @hftshooter
    @hftshooter7 күн бұрын

    I think you may be confused? The measurements that you mention; 4.50, 4.51, 4.52, are in fact the pellet head sizes not skirt sizes. In my experience, provided the pellets are from the same manufacturer, the skirt size doesn't factor as the air will expand them out into the rifling.

    Hft is not so much about group size like benchrest is but predictablility. A pellet that is consistent in the amount of wind and drop it takes so it's poi can be accuratly predicted is what will put more points on your card and the 10.3's are certainly good in the wind. I have used the JSB heavies myself and find that going up about 5 or 6mm higher on the mounts compared to a 8.4 setup brings the aimpoints to very nearly the same.

    Hi Jeff, It's nice to see you again and view your latest instalment. I was pleased to see the JSB Exacts do very well. Although, I like the Bisleys and BSA Goldstar. On the advice of a very good gunsmith, I've stuck to what he advised me to do with pellets. He advised me to use the lighter 8.4 gr pellets in my springers and the heavies 10.34/10.65 grains in my pcp air rifles. The principle is the release of air. In a pcp air rifle, when the trigger is pulled, all the air is released at once. In a springer, it is a gradual increase as the piston moves up the compression chamber, reaching the top and giving its full allocation of air. I thought the JSB groups were good. I lost faith in the Air Arms pellets as in my last tin most had damaged skirts and was disappointing to see. Anyway, Jeff, best wishes, from Ian

  • @hftshooter

    I shoot HFT and use barracuda FT everyone says 8.44gr are best for HFT but in my testing FT’s were best for my gun. I tested all the usual suspects most grouped well are 25yds but when i went out to 45yds they were clearly grouping the best. There is more of a drop obviously but a scope adjustment and Mero take care of that. In my opinion anecdotally they seam to take less wind than a 8.44gr pellet. @@biker5719 I gave you the information you asked for. The energy dissipated to the pellet (Joules or Foot Pounds) will change dependent upon the weight of the pellet and the muzzle velocity. It is unlikely that either of these will be constant in an air rifle. I used a chronograph to measure muzzle velocity and used the manufacturers stated pellet weight to calculate the energy in Foot Pounds, as shown in the spreadsheets on the video. To respond to your question I simply converted the average Foot Pound figures to Joules. The information I provided is correct.

A heavier object and a lighter object can have same kinetic energy eventhough their velocity are different. A 4 Kilogram object moving at 1 metre per second and 1 Kg object moving at 4 metre per second has same kinetic energy of 2 Joules eventhough they have different velocity. If so energy provided by the gun is constant and different pellet depending on mass attain different velocity but all have same kinetic energy and different momenta.

    @@hftshooter Springs use heat treated steel, typically. Heating the steel hot enough to bend it then letting it air cool will anneal the steel, which means you lose the heat treat. Note that this does NOT change the stiffness, or "springiness", it lowers the STRENGTH of the steel. What that mean in a practical sense is that the annealed part of the spring will yield at a lower load than the rest of the spring, causing it to bend or stretch under load. It will also break at a lower load.

    @@Cyberwendy I don't know your background with airguns. From my understanding, shortening the spring the way I did is, and has been, common practice for an awfully long time. It doesn't seem to cause the demise of spring gun springs as far as I know. 🙂👍

    @@jeffmccall8013This is just basic spring knowledge. One should not tamper with springs. Shortening like you did, watching it not get hot, you can get away with. Heating a spring, or any metal, will alter the structure off the metal. What you created is a unreliable spring, with no repeatable action. There are many applications where it is forbidden to alter a spring, for this reasons. And you have weakened the spring. Good luck

    Hi Jeff, I've just watched and enjoyed your Daystate Wolverine Hi Lite review again and enjoyed it. Do you still think it was a good swap for your Air Arms Ultimate Sporter? Thank you, Ian.

    The Ultimate Sporter is a nice rifle, I just didn't gel with it like I have with the Wolverine.

    This HFT stuff you’re doing is great, I’ve only just started really not very good but I enjoy it, I did come to the Cambridge club for the diabolical shoot, but got a frosty welcome from the chap booking me and a friend in, I haven’t been back, I Digress, thanks for your content.

    Interesting video but sound quality was poor and I missed a lot of what you said. Granted I was watching on my phone and was out in the garden with wind. Cheers

    Sorry to hear that, but there's not a lot I can do about the wind in your garden. All the best! 😄👍

    that’s a nice little range . ah the ghost dry nice gun and pretty dam accurate. shot a mates one a few times and it was sublime to shoot and handle . was not even very pellet fussy although ft barracuda go really well through it but so do jsb 8.44 or the air arms 👍

    Not the sort of problem you want to encounter with an expensive PCP that's for sure. Hopefully it was as simple as a loose screw. Range looks quite good

    All sorted now hopefully. Not sure if the hammer recoil loosened the bolts, but something to keep my eye on. 🙂👍

    Hi, I'm near Soham, between Ely and Newmarket. I understand you're not too far away since you mentioned Mildenhall in a previous video. I might have to go to ImpactAirguns as the club near me only has a very short airgun range. I would like to test out my Walther RM8 over a number of distances as I don't quite have a long enough back garden to see what my pellet trajectory is yet.

    Sounds like the outdoor range there would suit your needs. Well worth a visit. 🙂👍
