34 - Cold Truth: Temp Impact on Airgun Accuracy!

Спорт

In this video, I'm uncovering the cold, hard facts about airgun accuracy. Does temperature really throw off your shot? Join me as I put my air rifles through the paces in a chilly experiment that's sure to intrigue any airgun enthusiast! Watch to see how a springer and a PCP rifle fare in the cold and then again at room temperature. Are the results as chilling as the air, or is it all just hot air? 🌡️❄️
If you're into airgun shooting or HFT, you know consistency is key. But can the same be said for our gear when the temperature drops? Find out if those tales of temperature turmoil are true or just a bunch of hot air.
Is your air rifle shooting off-target when it's cold outside? Can a springer withstand the chill better than a PCP? I've got the answers, and you might just be surprised. Grab a warm cup of coffee (and maybe support the channel while you're at it by subscribing for free or giving me a thumbs up) and let's dive into this frosty investigation together!

    when its colder we tend to pull harder / stiffer and for a right hand shooter your shots may pull to the left. flexion dominance.

    2nd that ,this will affect the pellets as well. The lead will go a lot softer in summer ,once he takes his warm rifles outside, they will cool within a minute or 2

    You should try this again in mid summer and keep the cold results from today within a few minutes. The steel on both of your warm rifles will cool within minutes of taking them outside in the cold .In mid summer, you will see how hot the metal gets as it will be very hot to touch 😊

    @hftshooter good man ,we also found out that cleaning your bore would mess up the point of impact and groups ,I was trained to clean your rifle after shooting, but with modern powders and metals in barrels have changed ,I would shoot 3 shots on a range day and know I had a good group ,I would go home ,clean and lock my rifle away ,not banging or hitting the scope ,next time at the range ,similar temperature, same batch of ammo same sort of wind and my groups had opened up drastically, this went on for a few months ,I was talking to the guy that owns the range about it as I said "I can't understand why" he said "stop cleaning your bore unless your using cordite or your bore has gotten wet" this felt like it went against the grain ,he also said only clean it once your rounds start to drift ,we're talking anything upto 300 rounds ,so I started to use his method, and to his word my groups staid the same unless it was a windy day or temperature change ,I even spoke to a bench rest shooter and he said I was talking out of my azz but when I quizzed him ,I said "what do you guys do before shooting a comp ? you put a few fouling shots down range .From that day on, I was winning comps ,my 22LR barrel was never cleaned either, ok air rifles don't use powder but the prisable is the same when it comes to rifling fouling 😉

    Four percent change in velocity is no concern. Try the same experiment with a gas ram springer vs steel springer. Beeman vs Crosman or Gamo. I would put my money on Beeman or any steel springer. Cold has no effect on my Beeman Manris, 998 fps, 8.3 Superdomes, 0.38" groups at 30 Meters. Not going to buy any gas ram spring... Good video.

    That was very interesting. What I have noticed is that my aim points changed during the course of the day as the gun got colder. Either that, or it was me getting colder. LOL. I shoot a PCP. Thanks for that. What did surprise me was, that even it was only a small difference. The springer performed better when it was cold, when it was warm. I was always led to believe that springers performed better in the cold. You bust that myth. Cheers👍

    I've done a lot of endurance airgun testing of my own from leaving my PCP out overnight when it's -21 below coming out and shooting it and seeing if what the differences are if there's any. I have left it inside to where it's at 90 and then came out and shot it when it was -21 below to see I've never experienced any problems between the hot and the cold the only difference is I've ever experienced is different Scopes act different in the cold I have used the same gun and just change the Scopes and shot it in different temperatures with the scope and the gun would always stay true it would just be the scope that would shift up or down or left or right with temperature changes the air guns always seem to perform exactly the same.

    Very interesting. I've had some unexpected misses on rabbits at 30-35yds this last few weeks (very cold weather using AA S510 JSB 8.44g). Reviewing the PARD night vision footage my aim points parallax and follow through were good. I also had to adjust the 25yd slightly to bring up the POI. Your results help me think this through and consider how to accommodate - cheers. ..... So, does a regulated PCP show the same characteristics?

  • @hftshooter

    It can definitely be gun specific, last time I checked temp change years ago over crono with my EV2, set it in sunmer at around 25 degrees it was running 770 on average, checked it again during winter league around freezing and it was doing around 760, back upto 770 in the following summer. Scope shifting or other parts of the rifle expanding/contracting can also cause POI shift too One of the problems with testing something like temp shift is the variability from gun to gun (even the same model), springers especially can vary, with shed tuners altering shift characteristics based on internals (including what/how lubrication is used) The HW100 was notorious for temp shift due to the grease on the hammer assembly, once that was removed it was very stable (at least the one i had) had to nock the power down after removing the grease but had little temp shift afterwards. Edit: most temp shift I've seen personally is about 20fps from summer to winter temps, not necessarily my rifles, but the highest I've heard is about 50fps (for a gun that's working fine)

    Interesting test, but did you try the pellets warm & cold also ? I suspect that there would be less of a difference if the pellet temperature matched the gun temperature !

  • @hftshooter

    @hftshooter

    I don't think so. A temp change is not going to effect pellet mass and the change in head size will be insignificant.

  • @donramsay169

    @@hftshooter the mass won't but the hardness of the lead would, bearing in mind the jsb's are already pretty soft

    Hi Don, I just did some calculations and the density of lead will change by just under 16 milligrams per cubic centimetre over a 14 degree drop. So given the size of the pellet I would suggest that its worth considering, but insignificant.

  • @donramsay169

    @donramsay169

    5 ай бұрын

    I totally agree, but we're not talking about mass /density(they are different properties) thought mrtaffspoon was talking about the hardness of lead at different temperatures. And it's effect on pellet- land /Grove fit. Personally I think a more interesting experiment would have been the effect temperature has on humidity&air pressure at the impact point . I hate spec talk, sooner spend the time shooting my rifles

    hello , why is a springer not so sensitve with de temp . the spring gets stiffer in the cold , and that overcomes the higher viscosity of lubes and thicker air ,this will not be the case with a gasram , the pressure in a gas ram wil fall in the cold

    All comes down to the PCP needs compressed air to expand where the Springer is simply pushing a volume of air But the Springer is requiring the lubricant used to be more or less viscous in tune with the temp obviously less in the cold. Why are both of these not zero in to start with makes any conclusions null and void

  • @Dan_vRS

    In warmer temperatures, the metal on all guns and ammo will expand, which will affect the accuracy due to tighter tolerances. When I used to bench rest shoot, I would weigh all my cases ,powder, and heads to .2 of a grain , @100m I could shoot a clover group and a few times 1 ragged hole group ,and timing between shots ,when we would forward and patch the rifles were covered with a gun bag to try and keep them cool ,we had guys leaving their ammo in thier cars and they wondered why thier groups would open up ,this will affect air rifles as well ,lead will soften when warm and go hard when cold ,the barrel will expand in the sun as well
