    Hello, as an architect. Id suggest function. That you upload simple .dwg floor plan in scale 1-1 in metric or imperial preset. For me metric for example. And than do scann, which would be having exact dwg as a bacground. During scanning, it would be automatically catching surfaces according to dwg. Or even some 3d obcets. Like I meassuer by laser distance between some beams at attic or let say some known objects, this I upload as a base. And than Polycam would use it as a reference and keep gooing with rest.

  • @LiDAR3D
    @LiDAR3D5 ай бұрын

    Maybe. Having a good quality dwg would almost defeat the purpose of scanning but if you have it - why not. Looks like the quality of the scans get better with iPhone 15 pro max and the vision pro will probably be even more accurate and visually better. I can see how it would be good you as an architect to scan post project completion. Very interesting to see if there are any differences between the model/drawings and the final build, and also just to have it for documentation and potential as a starting point for a digital twin.

  • @LiDAR3D
    @LiDAR3D7 ай бұрын

    Thank you. I think if it's fit or not depends on what you are going to use it for. It's definitely not mature enough for some use cases yet. However, in a renovation project, a combination of manual measurements and what I call the "raw lidar" scans can be a starting point that is hard to beat (without a very large budget). It all depends on the specific task or project requirements and what stage it's in. I appreciate the feedback, thanks!

    Another excellent video, thank you. Apart from the measurement inaccuracies, my problem with this and other apps is that the walls are assumed to be 100mm, thicker walls, chimney breasts etc. confuse the plan layouts and produce anomalies. Perhaps if the walls could be set to zero thickness to show the room inner faces only, then this would enable more accurate multi-room layouts?

  • @LiDAR3D
    @LiDAR3D9 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the encouragement and for contributing by raising a very good point. On multi-room floors with walls that are not all 10cm thick, this issue will bleed over and cause even larger measurement inaccuracies overall. It's a hard problem and I don't see how it can be properly solved without some kind of manual input. Maybe starting from close to 0 as you say and then letting the operator add the data or drag to adjust the rooms and layout so that the exterior shape and size don't turn out incorrect. It would not be ideal but perhaps better than the current 10cm preset. The "actual size" model in the video was made using the LiDAR mode and some manual control measurements for verification. I think it's the best way to go for now to ensure that wall thickness is as close to the actual as possible. 🔌 ....and if you also need an optimized CAD 2D/3D our team is ready to assist by producing it manually 😊

  • @LiDAR3D

    LiDAR mode captures a raw mesh (examples can be seen in this and other video on the channel). Room mode does an automatic convertion of the raw mesh into a parametric model which then can be used for some specific applications where raw meshes are less suitable. So basically you can say that Room mode (Apples RoomPlan) performs a task automatically which previously required manual CAD drafting skills.

    You correctly noticed that Dot3D stands out from all programs by the ability to optimize the resulting scanning point cloud and the ability to use AprilTag. It really increases accuracy. Drifting in clouds of points obtained with Dot3D is much less common than in other programs, thanks to the optimization algorithm. We scanned the long and complex facade using Dot3D, set tags on the facade planes of the building, removed their coordinates with a total station and entered them into the program, the results impressed us. The other two programs you mentioned in the video coped with the task much worse. When scanning extended objects, using these programs, the accuracy drops significantly, and there is always a significant drift when closing. Hence, for significant projects, the scanning program should be able to optimize point clouds and recognize AprilTag, which are used as reference markers to set coordinates or linear dimensions.
