    I an observational pantser. I simply watch a movie in my mind and transcribe what I'm seeing. The order of scenes is chronological. I guess there could be movement of things that happen concurrently such as these two people having a plot-driving argument over here and somebody else doing something that drives the plot over there, but the order is almost always naturally sequential. You wouldn't want the Millennium Falcon to arrive before the Death Star blows up Alderaan. That would change the story rather drastically.

    I thought this was a good video, though I was pretty riveted by the book and I love the movie. Finally reading the book for the first time, which I finished early today, there is something a little troubling about some of the dramatic licenses taken, but even Susanna admits in interviews she didn't think it was even possible to adapt this, because it wasn't a story. Morally, it is questionable some of the more extreme alterations to the events in the book, but at the same time, any movie 'based on a true story' shouldn't be treated as anyway close to the actual reality, as they rarely are. And the resulting film does have many elements from the book interwoven into it (key moments, bits of dialogue, etc), and while it should be treated as a fiction that resembles in some part the true story, it does have more than a grain of truth in it, in what it created. Many completely fictional films also have grains of truth, in what they capture. For me, so much of the film mirrors a part of my own life and that is why I'm sure many of us connect to it. So while not fully accurate, it reflects the truth of many who do connect with it and there is something to be said for that. I finished the book early today then popped in the movie and I still love the movie and I enjoyed the book very much, even with the differences. They both reflect a kind of truth (and truth isn't always factual).

    While we're on the topic of AI, I love Pro Writing Aid. Completely eliminates the need for copy editing and proofreading and does it better because it eliminates human factor. But not only that, unlike an editor that would give you a suggestion what they think might be a better word choice, Pro Writing Aid provides you with a variety of options to choose from depending on writing style. It gives you control. And if someone says that you can't use these tools, because machine doesn't have human perception, remember that it is not style and word choice that make people love a book, it's the story. And no editor is going to help you write a better story. Editors are obsolete.

    Thank you for making this video. As a first-time writer of a memoir, I made the mistake, which was pointed out by you, of using all caps. I appreciate your advice on editing. I can’t afford to hire a professional editor, so much of the editing must be done by me as I am trying to find an agent to land a book deal.

    I wanna quit because it takes money to make money, I can’t afford to advertise, and I get maybe 3 sells a month. I am over it tbh. I get great reviews from my readers but the prob is getting it out to more people and that costs money. Social media only goes so far… 😢 I cant make money without sales but i cant make sales without money and paid advertising

    That is exactly why I started the side-hustle in the first place... to fund ads and all the expenses that come with a launch. Check out my newest video, which talks about exactly this. So many authors are in the same boat and there are several ways to get the funds needed to keep the author dream alive!

    Great advice. What are your thoughts on alternatives such as serialization via Substack &/or Medium?

  • @nonsensefreeeditor
    @nonsensefreeeditor21 күн бұрын

    It varies wildly, honestly. I've had a few clients do great on Kindle Vella. Others... not so much. Honestly, I think Substack is better for platform building vs. earning. Medium has the better system for fiction in that readers purchase credits and they pay per article/chapter, vs paying a monthly fee for each publication.

  • @JPStaszak
    @JPStaszak21 күн бұрын

    @nonsensefreeeditor interesting. I've been noodling how to drive traffic towards my Substack for eventual monetization, perhaps I'm looking at it wrong. I'll have to look into Medium a bit more.

    The first mistake in urban writing is, how White Corporate literary world define too many Black authors' writings as "Urban". The genre, "Urban" is such a racist term. This video highlights a further myopic purview of the stereotyped 'genre'. It must be noted, "The Godfather Series", which carry all of the stereotypical tropes that are defined as "Urban" writing, is considered a "crime novel series". Although we can trace Black published authors back to Phyllis Wheatley in the 1700s, and even earlier to our African ancestors, where storytelling is Millennials old, Black authors struggle to find our niche as legitimate Writers & Authors, although Toni Morrison was a few American female authors and the last American Author to win the Nobel laureate in literature.

Thanks to a wife who knows how to call me out on my BS, I've locked it down to three platforms, two of which are meant to drive traffic to the third. I’ve been in a few writing groups and critique groups, both irl and online, over the years. My issue has been other writers’ lack of understanding of why they are there and how to go about giving good critiques. It’s been bad enough that the last two years I haven’t touched my own stuff or even other people’s stories. I went on a whole education arc near a decade ago just so I could do a better job of giving and getting critiques but it only showed me how many people don’t actually want help or do but don’t know how to use the advice they get. I like talking about the craft, but finding those groups has been rough. Anyway, nice video on clarifying the two. 😁

    If you order from the box site you can buy it in a bundle with a case. A lot of people in a boox fb group have suggested screen protectors because they’re sensitive and others have noted although it has a textured surface is still slippery. People have dropped them and gotten chinks in the device so take that all into account I’d say it is wise to invest in protective cases for longevity.

    They just hate the playing field is near even with indie authors who work 2 jobs and can't afford an artist and now have easy access to art. Plus if we hate what it is generated we can regenerate, vs paying a traditional artist more money for a new cover. I use a face swap with a AI photo cleaner when I make my AI book covers. I'm proud of the cover I have for The Uncivil Truth. These people will constantly hate. I even use AI when I'm struggling with a description or have writers block and need inspiration. And the fact some of these folks will actually zoom in on a cover and look for ANY imperfection to "prove" it was done by AI, is sad.

    This is a juicy reflection of what's currently happening with our publishing processes. What makes creating all the more entertaining and fun is collaboration. Working with another human being or more to build and make something out of thin air interests me. It seems like when there are more heads than one working on a project, there's more oomph in the cauldron. I'm working on a book that is literally 10 years of development lol sometimes, people aren't ready when the idea drops in their lap. Life has this way of making us dig deeper and go thru some realshit to humble us and bring us back to our core values.

    I'm in the middle of writing my adult dark fantasy romance book and I look forward to hiring you when it's done. When you mentioned you're "so old"... Well that is a huge plus in my book. Not just experience, but frankly a lot of the 20-something "writing experts" (and even agents, yikes) all over youtube have some bizarre and arbitrary guidelines in their writing, and often interject their personal politics into things etc. I'd like someone with a more rounded and grounded world perspective reviewing my work who cares about a good story and not checking ideological boxes.
