    It’s funny how simple and easy this part looked to edit without having to go out of your way to add VFX to remove the gold off Smaug. I don’t know why more fan edits don’t just do that, it still achieves the same effect.

    First time I watched this edit (the 2024 version), and haven't rewatched the hobbit movies since I saw it in the cinemas. It's really something to see a Bilbo-centered story like it is in the books, and the pace is quite entertaining! This is perfect for a 16 hour marathon, and I look forward to rewatch it again to notice more. (haven't seen any other edits before, only summaries of some). (I have also seen the commentary video you did with Random FT2, and I agggree, the only thing that would be nice to further include, if possible, would've been Smaugs "No Blade Can Pierce Me" line, and the whole company meeting Thranduill before they are incarcerated, but the last one would require cgi background fickling to have a chance at working.)

  • @M4Studios

    Just watched it myself recently, and my god, the pace of the experience became so great!!! Having only watched the original films on theaters, I remember dreading a rewatch knowing the amount of material that would make for a long, multi-sitdown watching experience with forced add-ons and side plots that take away from the world and the experience. Thank you so much. This truly elevates the material to a proper telling of the source material.

    AHH IM SO EXCITED!! I have been eagerly waiting to watch a fan edit like this and have been so excited reading the website and seeing your edits as its been coming along. Rewatched the extended editions again recently and was sort of 'editing as i went along'- wishing that it was all cut down to the really good bits that i like them for without all the garbage. SOOOOOO HAPPY that you are making that a reality!! literally downloading the file as Im typing this. I saw that you can even burn them on cds and you've designed the disc art and box for it- THANK YOUUU! Hopefully i will be able to make use of that so that I can proudly have your edit on display next to my box set on my hobbit shelf. Youve done the lords work...

    I just watched it for the first time and am really impressed (I used to watch the Dustin Lee Cut, which is also really great and has a lot of similar goals to this imo). Fantastic work and you really feel the refinement of this cut. There are very few moments when you kinda "feel" the cut (I remember like: Bombur hanging hanging on the tree, Gandalf not noticing the ring and some moments during Thorins fight against Azog on the ice). Overall you have found really incredible solutions. Your way of including Beorn seems so natural I couldn't imagine it otherwise anymore. I also like the Bombur jump-kick and also the intercuts with Kili's fight in the finale. Thanks to your inclusion of Subtitles I will show this to my wife for sure. Greetings from Germany!

    Really nice video you put together here! I ended up switching out to a different OptiFine version since the one you provided it had sometimes showed invisible chunks for a millisecond when turning. I also installed a mod that adds the version label on the top left of the screen that says, "Minecraft Beta 1.7.3". Other than those two things, this is the best compilation I've seen! Love the tall grass removal too.

    The Smaug scenes are beautiful. It's a shame they're tainted by the fact that Bilbo's discovery of the weakspot barely matters in the movies, because the knowledge about it is already in Laketown. I wish the information about the weakspot had been brought from Bilbo to Bard in the movies in some way, even without the thrush.

    I love your edit, it is absolutely great! I think all these changes look great as well. The only thing I'd change about it is I'd keep *some* of the Stone Giants - I know they don't look perfect but I think it's a great little action set piece and their presence adds so much to the wonder and mystery of Middle-Earth that Tolkien so frequently emphasized. I saw another edit that kept them, but removed the egregious bit where it turns out the Dwarves and Bilbo are standing *on* a Giant - so instead, the Giants appear, they fight, and all the rocks falling causes Bilbo to almost fall, keeping their presence but skipping the fake out where it looks like half the Dwarves got crushed. It'd be a small readdition but I think it'd preserve so much character, but maybe I'm biased because I love the Stone Giants so much.

    Here's a fun idea for a potential book-accurate addition. The Appendices show Bilbo saying his witty "Dwarves do take some catching" line before putting on the ring. Would there be a way to put that in somehow, with some keying and clever editing?

    Nice revision! Focusing on the human element was always a strength of this sequence, even more so with your edit! I adored your re-shuffling of Bard and Smaug's face-off, having the former assemble the ballista as if to answer the latter's question with "I'm your reckoning, biatch!" 2 questions... 1) Was there no way to integrate the additional shots of Laketown destruction (BTS stuntwork, people burning alive inside homes) with your current means, or was it just not worth using in your opinion? 2) Where can I download this revised version?

  • @M4Studios

    You've done awesome work and when I watched your cut last December I thought it was the definitive version (having now seen a few different fan cuts). The only constructive feedback I have is about the final battle particularly around Thorin and the hilltop/tower/ice battle. My friends commented that the whole sequence felt a bit rushed and that because of how fast paced the battle has become it was harder to follow the sequence of events. The only other comment I had was around Gandalf and Bilbo's goodbye. In the original cut, Gandalf's last stern/angry expression as Bilbo walks away made sense because they'd really played up the Ring and Gandalf being suspicious of Bilbo's lies. But in your more book friendly cut I think his last negative look comes across as a bit out of place. If I remember correctly in the book after Gandalf says you're only a very small fellow in a wide world Bilbo says "thank goodness" or something like that. Their goodbye feels like it should end on a happier note. But that's just a matter of opinion of course :) I'm not sure I can offer much in the way of suggesting changes but thought I'd pass along that audience feedback. The Vimeo link seems to be down so I can't comment on the new battle cut but I'm very excited to see how it all flows. The new changes sound great. Thank you again!

  • @M4Studios
    @M4StudiosАй бұрын

    Hey, thanks for watching. I think I have improved the Ravenhill part of the battle in the new update as (I think) I described in the video, but the core structure will largely remain the same unfortunately. It is simply impossible to make it any slower because I've had to remove all of Tauriel and Legolas from Ravenhill. Personally I don't think it's hard to follow, especially in the update, it's pretty simple with just Dwarves going in to fight Orcs, but the Dwarf deaths we simply don't have any more footage to help slow them down any further. As for the goodbye, I think trimming that shot would be tricky without disrupting the flow, but it might be possible. Regardless, I probably won't because I do enjoy the moment as a balance of book accuracy and also being a non-overbearing reference to the following trilogy, Gandalf suspects something (even if he doesn't outright know details) I should be releasing it in the next few weeks, it's all ready!
