That Is Interesting

That Is Interesting

My name is Carter and welcome to That Is Interesting. I believe that geography shapes the world we call home, that how people interact with the land they live in impacts their history, culture, politics, economics, and society. The world is a truly beautiful and fascinating place. Every little corner of it is interesting and unique in its own way. If you like maps, flags, enjoy learning about history, if you want to understand what truly makes a place - whether a town, city, region, state, or country, unique - this is the channel for you. It’s a geography channel in the sense that geography is key to understanding a place and what makes it tick. I make longer form videos with a specific focus on my home country, the United States. I’m probably best known for The US Explained, an ongoing 56-part series that takes a deep dive into every state, territory, and federal district that make up the United States. If any of this sounds interesting to you, subscribe and join me on this journey!

Rivers change course, they have a plain they meander through and changes periodically within the river plain. Sometimes beavers or other animals do things that change even larger rivers more often than you might expect.

For Wilkes-Barre, there’s no consensus. A lot of natives will say Willks or Wooks and Bear. But the name of the city come from the last name of two British MPs that supported the colonies, John Wilkes (pronounced Willks) and Issac Barre (pronounced Beary). So the correct saying is Willks-Beary… or whatever you’d like, it’s fun to see the new ways people pronounce it.

Thank you for posting. I live in Worcester MA, incessantly brags about being the "second biggest city in New England" yet feels much closer to a Lowell, Manchester or Waterbury than a Providence, Hartford or New Haven.

Wait Tulsa isnt a suburb of Norman though? Did I hear that right? Like OKC Norman??? I must have spaced out and missed something lol Also my Dad is from the Gaeltacht in Ireland and his side is still there, my Moms side came over as Dutch Quakers and settled in Salem in the 1600s. Crazy how they ended up together so long after :)

10:12 WRONG WRONG WRONG. Suburb to suburb is the new commute pattern, only a few cities still have city commute still and those cities are in deep trouble financially.

News media had a big problem with how they delineate cities. It's crazy how often I see a news story that says "in Los Angeles" when they're reporting an incident that occurred in Ontario, Montclair, Fontana or even San Bernardino, around 50 miles east of Los Angeles and even in a different county. The folks who live in California's "Inland Empire" do not consider their home to be "in" or even "near" L.A. - there are a bunch of other cities in between L.A. and the Inland Empire - but large media outlets invariably report wildfires of other major news stories as occurring "in" Los Angeles even though these other cities actually contain a larger combined population than L.A. proper. I often wonder if the East Coast media even knows L.A. doesn't include the entirety of Southern California. The population nucleus is not actually in Los Angeles, it's farther east, and very few Inland Empire residents commute to L.A. for employment; there are simply too many jobs closer to home to make that commute worth the effort especially considering it takes 15 minutes to go three blocks on Southern California freeways these days.

In parts of SW Atlanta/Southwestern Fulton County you can find boulders scattered around the area that are as big as houses, and seem to be completely out of place. they would have to be from A time when Georgia was completely submerged, I would say that there's no way those rocks were moved from elsewhere...

Well made video but need a few clarifications: Nullifications wasn't for laws the state didn't like- JC Calhoun believed nullification was only for laws that were thought to be unconstitutional. also, you didn't mention that Columbia, our capital, was a planned city- SC is the only one of the original 13 states with a planned city for a capital. Finally, you didn't mention Santa Elena (where modern St Helena in SC is) Santa Elena was a Sanish Colony and was the capital of Spanish Florida until the Spanish abandoned it.

I'm Welch on my mother's side. Here since the nations founding. I am a son of the revolution as my 5th great grandfather served in Washington's army and died at Valley Forge...of disease. I'm Hungerian in my Father's side. His parents came here in the 1910s. My grandpa was actually sponsored by the US Government as he was a journeyman Tool and Die maker. A skill very much needed during the industrial revolution and needed growth of manufacturing on the east coast. So....I guess the makes me...a well-hung American! 😜

0:31 Genocide implies purpose. European's coming to the Americans weren't intending genocide. They were just ignorant to the fact that natives (their ancestors came likely from Asia so...native is used loosely!) had never been exposed to things like small pox. So, since they had no natural immunity to it nor had they had a chance to build up antibodies yet....they were brutally hit by disease. But, this was NOT the intentions of the Europeans so...The word Genocide.... shouldn't be used!!!
