    If you show with this on any decent film sets ... you are fired by the safety person (even though it's not really much of a safety issue).

    Tool batteries have better cells inside and have similar voltages and capacities, yet they cost way less. Makita makes black 14,4V batteries, just check makita bl1450. The price of V mount is BS just like the price of most video and photo gear. I've used some V-mount bats with outdated cells in them, yet they costed $500. Absolutely no excuse for it.

    99 watt hours shouldn’t cost much more than 100 dollars for just the battery (with markup to the customer already applied) maybe say another 20 for the electronics and then add some more stuff on top, how is a small rig 300 dollars??

    Opened the bag of my safely stored Easyrig - Clone after one year to find out THAT THE GREASE CREEPED OUT OF THE HOUSING WHERE THE LARGE KNOB SITS ON AND IT GUMS UP! Same model as in this video, about 3 years old. The grease has become sticky like tree gum. Isopropyl alcohol and Acetone(!) cannot remove it. I didn't try cleaning solvent or turpentine yet. The backside facing the vest is clean. Looks like the balancing function is gone. Dis anyone experience the same problem?

I have the 200a version- which is supposed record a backup on a micro SD and it randomly stops working.

    Was going to give you a big thumbs up for this, but upon seeing your approach to wiring, I cannot do so in good faith. Soldering and electrical tape is not appropriate for 120V AC and could result in a shock on set, or fire if the electrical tape loosens up. Doubt any insurance would cover a production with this, and there won't be a city municipal code in the US that will allow its use. Also, even though it seems so much easier, never, never, never put acid flux on electrical wires - a few months later and the joints will have significant corrosion on them. There are two safe ways to hook up the wires you show here: 1. Slide a piece of heat shrink onto the main cable, then crimp the individual wires together with butt splices (preferably with built-in heat-shrink tubing) and then encase all of them with the main heat shrink. Ideally, you'll want to also re-cut the cable ends staggered with each other, so if one does pull apart, it's less likely to short on the cable directly next to it. I know you do allude to heatshrink being better, and potential dangers if the electrical tape were to fail, but the hazards of your experiment _really_ aren't emphasized enough for the average freelancer who knows a lot more about cinema then electricity. 2. Feed the wires into a waterproof IP68-rated three-wire junction box and connect the wires with the internal connectors. Either of these is a solid approach to joining these cables safely. No disrespect intended with these comments, but the type of wiring shown here is a big no-no and needs to be called out. P.S.: Did this setup or the new power supply have an in-line fuse?

    Try to find AG Neovo screens. They have multiple models that run on 12 Volt. You'd only need a small converter to bring the 16,8 Volt fully charged voltage a bit down to 12 Volt. (and please, do yourself and your equipment a favour and buy a converter from Recom, Murata and other reputable brands and not the Aliexpress stuff). Yes, they are heavy (far more heavy than the usual monitors out there) but they are more rugged, can come with rubber-protected corners, have a metal case ánd can provide a glass layer in front of the screen to protect the vulnerable LCD. The PCB is completely more rugged than any consumer-model out there (I opened mine to find if I could get rid of an annoying sound produced by the backlight power supply). Another plus is the fact they can be adjusted thoroughly with testcards (one can control each individual color from completely zero to full 100%, most consumer-monitors can't). Also contrast and brightness is a completely seperate setting that not only goes from zero to 100%, but also does not interfere with eachother, like it usually does on consumer-monitors. And to top it all: my AG Neovo RX-24, which I got second hand, still beats my newer (also second hand) Iiyama XB3270QS (which I considered the better monitor) when it comes to sRGB capability. Not by much (4 percent or so) but I was surprised such an older screen still performs so well. The fact you didn't get nuts with your V-mount plate has simply to do with the fact that you normally screw this onto equipment that has threads at the right place, and because those threads are in places where you can't reach with a pair of pliers or socket to hold a nut in place, that's why.

    Considering that some batteries turn their FETs off in protection of the cells while the others don't could mean that they stress the cells more. The gas gauge inside the packs is set to a maximum output current. Go over that and it just cuts off the FETs to the outside world. Either wait long enough or remove the overcurrent condition and the gas gauge will turn the FETs on again. Besides a software-setting to make the battery more expensive, it's also protection. Not every cell or PCB can handle high output currents. Higher overcurrent settings make the batteries usefull for high-drain applications, making the pack more expensive, while it's the same battery when cheaper, but then just set with a lower maximum current.

  • @weeardguy

    Pity that you didn't properly connect and insulate a mains cable. If I would see such a cable, I'd request you to leave it unplugged. There's no strain relief, there's no proper insulation, just an accident waiting to happen.

    The BMS inside those things is not just 10 dollars... Those are very advanced pieces of electronics by Texas Instruments or Maxim, besides probably a few other big names in the battery management industry. The chips are costly at 15 dollars and over (mind you, these are price points at 50 pieces and up!) and are incredibly complex. It only took me 9 months of self-study to figure out how to reset mine (BQ20Z65), and then finally start recelling them. The cases are NOT that cheap. Depending on the brand they have to endure strict testing for mechanical impact, fire-resistance and just overall quality (the whole battery is hanging on the V-mount basically, that needs some thought on the design of the casing). Certification for travel by plane is part of the high price. The aerospace-industry knows its prices... As the manufacturers will buy the cells by thousands, the price per cell drops significantly (I paid 360 euro for 180 genuine Panasonic NCR18650B's, they are far more expensive when bought by smaller amounts) And when it comes to the cells not being that well balanced: not an issue. The gas gauge will take care of that, it will only limit the total lifetime-on-a-charge for the total battery because one group of cells is worse than the other.

  • @xonx209
    @xonx209 Жыл бұрын

    Not well balanced is an issue. It could significantly shorten the life of the entire battery pack. It also imply the BMS may not be working, or maybe there is no BMS at all. In theory, someone could slap together some 18650 cells with no BMS and call it a v mount battery pack.

  • @weeardguy
    @weeardguy Жыл бұрын

    @@xonx209 I was mainly referring to the video-creator mentioning that this is a thing of cheaper-batteries, while imbalance can happen in any battery and if it's a good BMS/gas gauge, will be corrected by said circuit. Imbalance does not mean the pack is bad, it's just a feature that surfaces when slapping multiple cells together. The chance of 1 cell performing just a bit off compared to the others, gets higher the more cells you put together. A good BMS/gas gauge calculates the amount of energy going into each cell and balances this off during charging already, so that by reaching Full SoC, all cells are at the same energy-level.

    I bought a step up USB to AC adapter and I'm able to power a small 12 volt 4K monitor out of a small powerbank for the whole day. (I'm very happy because the powerbank was way cheaper and smaller than the NPF batteries the monitor is designed for and it lasted longer.) Now I wonder if there is some kind of adapter for DJI drone batteries, so I can power more stuff with some old drone batteries I have lying around. Maybe DJI to Dtap or USB... I'm even thinking about what makes V-mounts different. Why don't we just put a bunch of power banks together to power anything we want? I feel like we are paying too much for batteries.
