That's a great idea Phil! It must save loads of time and wood. I must turn one of those faceplate ring inserts.
Being a former engineer and 30 woodturning you find easy solutions to everyday jobs. Glad this idea will help you.
Thanks for sharing Phil, a very simple solution to a rather tedious process when removing the rest without a slot. Cumulatively it will save a lot of time and I can't see any risk associated with this mod.
Glad to help
I did the same to mine 2 years ago maybe sorby should make them like it
Sorby don't bothered.
Great idea
Glad you like it.
Great idea Philip I will be doing this 👍
Saves me a lot of time.
Thanks Philip I’ll be doing that
Thanks for this, Philip, brilliant idea.
Great hack. I’ll be doing this someday
Glad I could help.
Hi Philip, what a super simple but fantastic idea, thank you for the video I know what I am doing tomorrow 😊
You are very welcome
Philip Greenwood, I really like your videos, let's be friends!
The camera is a lot better Philip, it does however go out of focus sometimes when you put your hand in front when sanding. Maybe a good thing to lock the focus when it is set on the piece to save that happening. It's a lot better in this video than the last so well done oh and the calendar was good too. Regards Terry
Thanks Terry. Yes a few settings still to adjust still, but nearly there. Sound is also ready to test next. Hope to see you in a couple of weeks time.
Hi Philip just to let you know the video is a bit jumpy on my screen for your test.
Thanks, Terry I have a new pc, so testing the settings, will be a few more tests coming up.
Thank you, detail explains each step. Newbie, goal is a bowl full, different wood size. I having trouble too pointed
Great video. Clearly a guy who knows woodworking better than video making, which to be honest, reassures me more that you know what you're on about!
Thanks 👍
Good info in this vid. Is there any wood that is NOT suitable for wood turning? I'm considering buying a lathe, but what to do with all the pieces one practices on- firewood?
Thanks for the comment. You can use any wood I have found over the years, but depending on use may need to by very dry. I am soon starting a new series of videos, all about woodturning, starting with what is woodturning going through what you need to buy to lots of projects.
@@PhilipGreenwoodWoodturner excellent 👍👌 thanks. IL most likely get an Axminster large but like the look of some others also
Thanks 👍. Now considering one of these over Axminster and Holzman Is the distance between points suitable for chair leg turning?
On its own only around 15" but you can buy a bed extension.
Love the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Neat!
Thank you for this overview. I have been researching quite a while and came upon this which ticks a lot of boxes. I was wondering though - looking at your other videos using this model - what accessory you have fitted to replace the face plate that comes as standard ie the chuck that grips the wood piece? I have looked online on the manufacturers website but nothing listed that I can see. I would think further down the line I would like to do similar. As seen here kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXyHzJuflc7WaLA.html
Thank you for the comment. The additional equipment would be a chuck. I use the record SC4 a good chuck for the price. This opens up the opportunity to hold the work peice at end only, enabling you to make items like, egg cup, bowls and many other items.
Ah okay! The Record SC4 chuck - I shall look further into that. I do hope to secure a Record Power DML305 lathe before the end of the year. Im sure it would not be long before I would wish this upgrade and so useful to know what I am looking for - thank you kindly.
thanks. this is really helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
How much is it
You would have to look online now.
Thank you for posting this. I am just beginning in turning and am looking fir informative videos such as yours.
Thank you. I hope you will find the other videos helpful.
Big like!👍👍👍👍👍✅💪Felicitări! Great video 👍👍👍😎
Won't work for me. My faceplate has a threaded center for mounting on a lathe.
I use this method for faceplates with a threaded centre as well.
Thanks, Phil, always good to have some reference points.
Glad to help
@@PhilipGreenwoodWoodturner We have turned many items since our days with you.. keep the videos coming.
Thank you, I have the same set up with a CBN wheel. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.
Hi. How accurate is it for drilling in metal? For example, in a square pipe 40 * 40, can you make an aligned hole at a time?
You can drill metal, would have to check the specification for the maximum drill size. How accurate depends on the drill bit and drilling speed. It can drill at an angle but the srill bit could skid on the metal surface if not centred punced first.
@@PhilipGreenwoodWoodturner I mean a perpendicular hole at a 90 degree angle. It is also very interesting how he behaves with a step drill.
great information thank you
Yes a good video and also a new subscriber
Hi Philip, I think I have a pine chest/blanket box/toy box that you have made
Great info! Thanks for the tips👍🏻
Your welcome. Thanks for subscribing as well. Phil
very useful video will try this method next time as tear out is generally a problem in softer woods
Thank you for the comment. Sharp tools and a slow light cuts works most times. If the wood is really soft add a finish to the worse part and let it set, then a light cut with a freshly sharpen tool should help, this may have to be repeated for really bad areas.
Very useful video 👍
Thank you.
Hi wondering if 6pm can help sir I’m looking into wood turning would the DML320 be a good one to start with or the 305. I’m asking as I’m disabled and had 2 strokes and use a wheelchair and trying to find something easy to use sort of idiot proof or as it’s called in my house steve proof any help or advice would be very appreciated many thanks steve
Hello Steve. The main difference is the DML320 is variable speed so less belt changing, second you can start the lathe at a slow speed and increases the speed work you way up to a suitable speed for the size of work. For the extra £270 it will make life easer when you come to use abrasives you can just turn the speed down with the rotating dial. If you place a uneven piece of timber on the lathe you can find the correct speed that is safe and once in balance you can slowly increases the speed, no belt change. Hope this helps. I will be making more video and some live steams shortly. Phil
Thank you Philip. Simple and brilliant 👍🏻
Glad it helped
G’day Phillip.nice fruit well finished. I would like to tun a pear where the top of it, narrrow part is bent. I use multi axis turning. I would have to tun top first, but how wood I support pear to turn base. Any suggestions. I did turn one a few years ago, it was difficult to hold for turning base.
Thank you Greg for your comment. One way is as your suggest is to turn the top first. To finish the base I would place a piece of wood in the chuck, this can be a softwood. This needs to be a larger diameter then the pear and longer as well. This piece needs to be hollowed out on a slight taper. The aim is to hold the pear top inserted first and then line up the base with the revolving centre in the hole in the base of the pear. This needs to be a tight fit. This is basically a jam chuck. I hope this helps you. Phil
Thanks
2 hidden features: first is persistent reverse. Hold down the reverse button and the belt select button until you hear a beep Second is slow motion. Turn your lathe on, then off and on again inside a half second. This lowers RPM to about 40~ rpm per minute
Hi Shtanto You don't have to hold down the belt selection button at the same time as the Reverse button, yes you hear a bleep after 5 seconds, this is a good safety feature. One point to say for people new to this lathe or thinking of buying one is the speed selection button only changers the read out display not the motor speed, you still need to open the cover and changer the belt position manual. If you switch the lathe off then back on, it starts at the speed which the motor had reached as you press the start button, this is not the best practice. My lathe is 5 year old and going strong.
A very helpful review, thank you. I am considering buying one and would be interested to know if the table tilts both to the left and to the right, or does it just tilt one way? Thanks.
Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes the table moves both ways. Hope this is helpful. Phil
Brilliant idea!
Thanks!
Another nice video, I think where Ive been going wrong is trying to do the bead in one pass. Cheers Philip
Glad to help
Great video, new subscriber here, I'll watch your other videos soon
Thank you for your comment and for subscribing.
Thank you sir, love the Video's. I'm new to wood Turning & This helps a Lot!
Thank you for a comment. I try to help new Turners.
Thanks, Philip, for another masterclass.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sharing Philip and we'll explained. 😀
I like to explain so everyone can follow and make one.
Helpful information. I like your parting tool that looks like a boxcutter. Did you make it?
No all tools are from manufacturers. I want to use standard tools so anyone can go and buy them.
Brilliant in its simplicity. Thank you.
Thank you.
Philip, so shot and sweet! A welcome change from so many videos. Well done!
Thank you Joe. Some video can be quick and to the point. I also have some longer ones which show a full project which go on for a lot longer.
Thanks Philip. How do I sharpen it if I don't have a fancy edge machine? Cheers
This is also a way to sharpen the Skew. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nGp5xdJ8Zdqbo9I.html same principle as the proedge. All you need is a platform which you can set the angle to match the tool your sharpening. Hope this helps.
Thanks Philip perfect timing as was just thinking to have a go with the skew. Excellent piece, all the best for 2022 and please keep these coming
Glad I was of help Malcolm. Try a softwood first before moving on to Hardwoods. I intend to make more videos this year to replace some old ones.
Thanks for sharing this useful technique Philip it is very informative Thanks again.
Thanks Laurence.
