    I'm building a bass using a mahogany tele body. My first build. Two questions. How thick should the body be and should mahogany be cleared or will it take a color such as Butterscotch Blonde ? Thanks for your time.

    Eric, I like your no-nonsense videos. I've only built two guitars so far, but the first one I installed frets BEFORE I carved the neck, and it was way easier. I had to make a kind of "cradle" for the carved neck to support it the second time when I installed frets AFTER carving. Are there any pros/cons to either way, and why do you do it after carving?

    Hi Scott! Thank you for watching! Really you can do it either way. I guess as o was learning to this process, I decided to carve the back contour first and have been doing the same all these years! As you progress, you will find “your way” of achieving your goal. Good luck and always have fun doing this!👍🏻👍🏻 cheers!

    @@ericcellini7499 Thank you my friend I certainly am having fun. I have talked to a few other people and I think I know how I am going to do it now. I am probably going to use my miter and slot my fretboard and then put the frets in at that point, before I glue to the neck. That way I can also carve the neck and see if anything happens like twisting, And then if I want to use pins to help secure the front board while glowing, I can pin where I am going to do in lay.

    Doing a comparison of videos. How people put binding on. At the factory they use band's that take months to comprehend how to wrap. I saw another guy that was a home builder like you and he started at the neck and went around. He fumbled a lot and I didn't like his technique because he kept leaving it too loose and having to go back many time's. You started at the bottom and that left you no seam. I think he could learn some things from you. Starting at the bottom seems to have also given you a better starting point.

    Do you use a down spiral cutter bit here? If not you, should rout clockwise inside pockets, and counter clockwise when the outer body sides are routed.

    One thing to be aware of using fillers is how and when to apply stain. (If you are staining the piece). Some fillers won't take stain and some fillers have an opacity to them that shows in the finish. Also, I've had some pretty bad experiences using nitrocellulose lacquer on top of some fillers (particularlu water based fillers). Always experiment with a spare piece of similar wood first.

    Thank you Eric. Very helpful video! Can you please tell me how your procedure would be different if your neck pocket required an angle (as on a Les Paul). Looking for a video that describes how to rout the neck pocket with a 2 degree angle. Thank you very much Eric.

  • @ericcellini7499
    @ericcellini74994 жыл бұрын

    electricwally hi! Thanks for watching! You could go. Two ways with a 2 degree angle. You could add a 2 degree “ramp” to your neck pocket template. Or you could cut the neck heal with 2degree angle. Hope this was helpful.

    @@ericcellini7499 Thanks Eric. Yes, I am aware of the two alternatives for the neck break angle but was seeking the methodology of how-to actually cut-it or rout-it that would guarantee a perfect outcome. Thanks again Eric.

    Perhaps while you are demonstrating how noisy your router is, you could edit out that sound and replace it with a bit of information about the router bit you use, and how you set the depth to make the binding channel

    This was an awesome video, thanks! Except I rubbed mine on with a paper towel, rubbed it in good, and then wiped off the excess right away. And then only had to lightly sand with 000 steel wool. I repeated this process once more. But it came out beautiful and with a WHOLE lot less sanding. Thanks again!!!

    I've seen a lot of videos for scratch-built and refinished guitars, and many use this seafoam green. Why is this color so popular. My personal opinion is that it's butt ugly, but apparently it means something in the guitar world. What am I missing?
