Strange your trans temps are getting that hot. I have a 2020 TRD ORP with full armor, F/R bumpers, winch, roof rack, 33s, etc I tow a 3k trailer as well and live on the west coast so our mountain passes are much much higher than where you are at. Some longer passes in really hot weather itll get up to 220 (Torq Converter and Trans Pan) but never to 250 and thats with 90-100 degree ambient temps.

I have bailed on trails like that. Fine when dry but a trap when wet, I have stories of damage. Wind rock, on most easy trails is fine but you just have to read the signs like all the wash outs heading up. Sorry you had damage but I did nearly the same thing on the DBBB in Kentucky last year. Stuff happens. $$$$

About to install one myself on my new 4Runner, but may wait a bit, as I want to install it when I change over the aftermarket bumper and install the winch and new fog lights, it's gonna be a big project. But I suppose they make a big difference I had a good one (factory) on my F-150 with the 8200GVWR package and towing through the mountains, it was great, heat of the summer chugging up the steeper hills and it never was out of the 195-206 degree range the whole time, so trans coolers are a great investment and it had nearly 200K miles too.
