    I got a rear air shock/spring on E500 replaced 6 months back, also Bilstein. Was also bad. Would deflate in 4-6 hours. Lucky the shop that did it got a replacement. Weirdly though, the original one was not actually bad, just the hose to the external 'ball' just tore, a split at the connection that got worse over time. Not a single shop detected that in the 6 years I tried to figure out the problem. 2-3 indie shops and twice to different merc shops.

    thats interesting! Maybe Bilsteins quality is no longer what it used to be? - I always thought Bilstein were the OEM provider of airmatic components for Mercedes

  • @leppie
    @leppie12 күн бұрын

    @@RANDASH I guess that is why they can charge $1k. Seen many cheaper, but most have negative reviews. Arnott seems to come second, but nothing for me locally (also would have needed 2 for rear for the way they work). Anyways, check your tubes, might be something silly. Even Bilstein says never to remove the tubes that come assembled with them (probably only relevent for the rears with reserviors).

  • @leppie
    @leppie12 күн бұрын

    TBH I dont understand their warning. The Airmatic system only goes up to 16 bar, which is nothing really in terms of pressure. Maybe just borderline to begin with?

    I just replaced front right and ran into same problem as you. It wont go down, release valve stuck. They are dorman brand but i guess similar to chinese. Soo disappointed as i always thought dorman provided good aftermarket stuff. Previously used arnott, bilsteins( new) and RMT rebuilt. Yes ive changed air struts three times since owning the car. Ps. I did the 9 volt thing in the two lower pins but dont hear the solenoid releaseing the valve, jus a humming sound. Also used my autel to lower/ release pressure but no luck. Only way i got it down was to remove hose and knock the valve with a socket extension and hammer, while also activating the lower strut from the autel scan tool. Hope this helps.

    You don't need to do the timing chain, only the timing chain guides. I haven't seen any evidence that the timing chain stretches over time. Tasos Moschatos states this one of his videos and Alex from legitstreetcars tested this by measuring a new VS old and there wasn't any difference.

    You can see the honing marks still perfectly. the rust is not an issue. Great little car. NB if you were made of cast iron you would have rust. if the exhaust valves were open on that cylinder the damp would get in.

    Caddy was being revved a lot during jump start At ~1500-2000RPM your alternator puts out max output.. don't need to rev beyond that. during a jump start the main current transfer is not the current from the running alternator (50-100A perhaps), but from the running vehicle's battery, usually up to 300A or more. Obviously the alternator does help, but you don't need to rev the tits off the caddy lol

    I really didnt expect rust inside the engine, lol. It's nothing to worry i'd say. These Opel engines are so strong. That rust is just surface level. First, change the timing belt, then the oil (you already did), and then, if you want, with a warm engine, make some hard pulls on the engine to clean the cobwebs and rust from inside better. (just drive at highway speeds will work too). This car seems to be very clean.. I'd keep it. Its very rare to see one stock and in this not bad condition. Caution is very good. But that rust wont cause it to blow. I bet it can do more 100k kilometers. And it's a EFI engine, single point fuel injection. It is very easy to get it messed up lol.

    After 15 years dormant I'd say a cambelt should take priority over oil, the engine won't self destruct if its run on old oil for a short time, get the engine hot after a belt change then drop the oil, you'll get more gunk out, and if you want to see how bad an engine can be and still be revived I suggest you watch Pole Barn Garage and see what Dalton gets running.
