I did something similar where I turned a couple of old pairs of jeans into a skirt. Having...substantial...thighs, I tend to wear out the inner seams quicker than any other part of the pant. So I cut the legs off of the top part of the jeans (keeping the pockets, zipper, etc.) and then having cut down past the worn crotch parts of each pant leg, created a gored skirt from the pant legs by sewing them back onto the upper part of the pants. Presto! Skirt, formerly pants! It's one of my favorite skirts now. I love upcycling projects! Your dress turned out super cute also!

The bust size and shapes are made to accommodate the support undergarments of the time, both vintage and modern patterns. Bra cup shapes and lift of breasts have changed. This could explain the discrepancies in the busts of the two patterns. - Historical Costumer

I am late to the party once again! Anyway, I started watching this video on my lunch hour at work & will finish at home. You have brought back another fun memory from the 1970s. I was a Junior in high school, so. . . .1974, I think. One of my buddies, Loré H., sewed a cape like this. She wore it when it rained (in Southern California). It looked great and kept her very warm. I *think* she may have been around 5'4" compared to my 5'1-1/2", so I'm sure it looked better on Loré than it would have on me. Loré's mother sewed and taught lots to her daughter, so Loré was a much more advanced seamstress than I was in high school!

You would think that, for a purely financial reason, just copying the original would be the cheapest option. But no! Not to mention we - their customers - buy these reproductions because we want the original dresses. We don’t want some modern re-interpretation!

I can’t stand how wide the lines on modern patterns are. It’s impossible to cut them out perfectly when the line is 2mm wide all the way around. Maybe that’s just my ND speaking, but it always makes my eye twitch when pattern makers do that. Even independent makers do, a lot of the time. 🫠

Hi Stephanie, this is the first time watching your videos, and yes, I have liked and subscribed! I would like to know if there is a tutorial or a pattern available for the spiderweb and roses dress that you are wearing in the beginning of this video. Thanks so much for your really enjoyable banter, and I can’t wait to watch more of your videos.

Curious what prices are like in USA, here in Aus a 200m Gutterman all purpose is $aud5 100m, $10 For 250m and $15 for 500m. Rasant which is 1000m costs about $8-9.

I couldn’t actually watch the video (doesn’t matter why) but I imagine that the general shape is the same but it’s drafted using the modern size-scale, possibly with yardage amounts that take into account wider fabrics. They probably screwed with the armscye (whatever, spell-check! I went to fashion school, that IS a real word and I’m pretty sure I’m spelling it correctly!) seam and the patterns almost certainly take into account larger/less dramatic body proportions and/or Bust/ waist/hip differential, (larger waistlines for sure) an absence of foundation garments and gentler bust darts for the far less pointed modern bust-line…am I close? I’m a pretty normal size for the current day & age. Actually, I’m several inches taller and a good few sizes smaller than the statistical average for an American woman. I also have body proportions that are far more in line with the vintage, 50s ideal with regard to B/W/H ratio. And even then, I have a little trouble consistently finding vintage patterns in the right size for me. So I can only imagine how much more difficult it must be for someone larger. Frankly, I’m not sure why anyone would want vintage clothes if they don’t bother with suitable underthings. It barely even reads as retro without them. If you don’t have boobs that could put an eye out, that leaves A LOT more heavy lifting than it’s reasonable to expect from a matte red lip- even with an assist from winged Liner! Any attempt at liquid liner has left me looking like I picked a fight with an ink well & insulted it’s mom so I have to do my best with pencil and wear a pointy brassiere. (I’m speaking generally, BTW, Not about the presenter Woman, whom I just noticed was wearing red lipstick. And a very impressive red lip too, I might add. Zowie!! That’s almost certainly an all over lip pencil + multiple coats of lipstick blotted after each one. I know everyone loooves MAC Ruby Woo but though it looks ok on- it’s never appealed to me much OR read as particularly “vintage”. I’m a Russian Red/ Clinique Matte Crimson girl. I keep wanting to try Besame but OhMyDarn is it expensive!!)

The 1950s patterns that I have that were given to me by my mother inlaw are also a 14, bust 34, but in practice they're really like today's 8. The waist on some of the blouses however, require some sort of girdle as was popular or endured for fashion in the 1950s. I agree that pleating lines on multisize patterns should be banned!! Just duplicate those specific pieces in all the included sizes.

I get distracted by everything lol. Im working on a project right now and I cut out the pattern and then thought I should recover my cushion for my chair. And then noticed my chair has been leaving marks on my floor. So I had to put new sliders on the bottom of the chair . And now that I am done with my two side project I am going back to the project that I was supposed to be doing this whole time.😂

As a teen we were regularly "gifted" large bags of cloths from one of my dads friends [his daughter outgrew/didn't want] . {Sometimes with the tags still on} I was tiny, so most of it was too big. but I "flipped" things to be my size. I also made many of my clothes often repurposing the cloth.. Someone in school made a comment once about my "homemade" clothes. My fast answer was ... Ohhh I'm sorry you can't get custom made clothes. Mine are one of a kind!! 50+ years later I still feel the same way !!

I love this project! I think the use of the original hems was a cute design decision. For the collar bits, I suggest using a small tack to keep them in place. You sewed the placket in place, so why not? I do have one genuine question: when you were cutting one piece in half by folding it over and running the scissors up the fold, you said that wasn’t a great way to do it. Why not? It looked like it got the job done.

Actually, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference how old the kids are😂. I don't come here to see your house. I hate ThreadUp. A few years ago I sent a huge bag of high quality, in style, blazers. I should have checked the box to return any items they didn’t want, but I didn’t. ThreadUp said none of the blazers would be listed and I have no idea what happened to them. I could have taken those blazers to my local consignment shop & thought ThreadUp would be easier. Ha! Never again. I also no longer buy anything from the company. I also will only take items to my local consignment shop & I donate the items they won’t take since we can use the tax write off.

Funny story. I’m a nurse, and at one point I was working at a hospital where student doctors would come through. I was in the neurosurgery department, and these young doctors would come and spend a couple of months with us, and then move along on their rotations. There were many interesting surprises dealing with doctors who were not finished with their training. Sometimes they were absolute morons. This young man was actually pretty smart, but he was having a hard time understanding something one day. He and I kind of bonded just because we both felt like misfits in the place we were at, and I’ll never forget one day when he turned to me almost sobbing, and said, even a worm can learn. That jumped right into my head when you said, she can be taught. Don’t forget, Stephanie, even a worm can learn. As an aside, sometime after one young man had been through, I injured my leg. I went to the ER, and he was the doctor that I was assigned to. I think he had already graduated. Anyway, I took one look at him and limped myself home. No way was that man going to try to treat me for an injury when I knew he had an IQ of about 12.
