Have you ever looked at a men's button up shirt and thought, "Gee wouldn't this make a great DRESS?" Well I did and so I decided to make this week's sewing vlog all about this process. I truned 4 identical button up shirts into what I am calling a "shirt-waste" dress. So come along with me and watch me upcycle shirts into a dress.

I understand bc I play too, it’s super fun and always seems more fun to pay to get ahead, but I’m telling myself it’s a good challenge to only use the free parts. Good luck! It’s kind of fun to see how far I can get on my own that way.

Hey this is unrelated but I'm a pharmacist and you should discuss newer nonsedating antihistamines for allergic reactions. For a long time we thought that Benadryl would act faster to immediately stop allergic reactions, however newer research is now saying this is untrue! the second generation antihistamines (Claritin, Reactine, etc) act as fast as Benadryl for non anaphylactic allergic reactions, and cause way less sedation. The obligatory: You should of course always discuss this with your actual pharmacist, based on your actual meds and medical history, but it's something not a lot of people know about, and you could save yourself a lot of unnecessary grogginess. Worth a chat.

This is great info! I'm curious; are you hearing discourse yet in your sector about quercetin? I picked it up from the veterinary scene a few years back, and it seems to be having a glowup moment in covid-related research, but it's also still oddly obscure at the same time, at least as far as I've seen in human med. I'd be fascinated to hear what if any murmurs or narratives may be bubbling up amongst you underrated pharm wizards

"Are you uncomfortable yet?" you ask when I have legitimately stopped breathing as I pray for you not to cut yourself or the clothes underneath because I have done both of those things in a similar situation... For real though, this turned out super cute! I love how many elements of the shirt became extra fun design elements of the dress. Adding this idea to my ever-growing list of projects to try someday.

I have a high powered magnet on a telescoping wand that lives within reach of both my sewing machine and my cutting/pinning space. It's from a hardware store and can lift like 5lbs or some nonsense. Absolutely overkill but also priceless. I drop a pin, grab it and get it before I forget about it. It also lets me pick up any other random metal item I drop. Marking pens, seam rippers, thimble, shears, bobbins, pattern weights (aka large metal washers), even entire embroidery hoops (get them by the little screw). I've slowly collected more tools with metal components just because I can pick them up without bending over. This is in part because I have no sensation in my feet and have previously been hospitalized twice for severe infections after walking around for months without being aware there were multiple pins embedded in my feet. My first magic magnet wand was actually a gift from an er nurse tired of seeing me. Less of an issue now that I spend most days in my wheelchair but wheelchair tires like pins even less than feet so still a critically important habit to maintain.

Guerrilla sewing at its best !! You ROCK !!
Your bright printed dresses are becoming a signature, particularly the fandom ones and we love it! I’m particularly in love with keeping the pockets/plackets/hems intact, especially the way there’s a subtle scallop to the skirt, such a cute detail 💛
this was a joy. filmmaker, musical satirist, sewist and standup COMEDIANE! (sitdown Canadian?) thank you......
I come to this channel for the button on button action!
Great job! I just made a dress shirt out of 2 skirts my fiance found at Target on clearance so everything is coming full circle.
You cutting into that shirt while it was on your body with a mic and another garment underneath is REAL BRAVEEEEE lol (PS IT TURNED OUT SO CUTE)
This is one of my favorite videos so far! Laughed so much! If I had known that shirt existed, I would have gotten one for my middle kid. He and I bond over beer, cursing, and Deadpool. He's a cop and I'm a psych prof (part-time), but the love between a mother and son overcomes a lot. Thanks, Stephanie, for making my evening. Now I am off to my sewing room to see what chaos I can brew up.
Sometime between November 2020 and today, I was at one of the 2 1/2 walmarts (2 superstores and a neighborhood market) in my local vicinity… I was delighted to find at least 6 (possibly 7) white mens long sleeve dress shirts (97% cotton and 3% spandex) all in an XL… for $2.00 each… TWO DOLLARS!… I now know what I must do to them!!
You embraced the chaos today. Looks like you had a lot of fun with filmography too. I think the shirt-hem is my favorite part
Ryan Renolds / Deadpool would approve. This was an awesome vid.
I also sew down plackets on shirts because I am a DD size chest and when I try on a shirt that gaps in the front I say it is suffering from blousesus gapposus which is a common disease amongst front buttoned shirts and blouses. Lol😂

Target has started putting optional inside buttons in the bosom-y area of plus size dresses and shirts and it’s a game changer.
The dress turned out adorably!!! I love how you used the hems of the shirts to create the big beautiful scallops. The red zip is incredible. If I saw you in public I would probably embarrass us both by shrieking with delight.
Button on button action is a very Deadpool thing to say.
The amount of chaos in this video is perfection
If you had left the sleeves on the skirt you could have closed the cuffs and made lots of really big pockets! Many many years ago I did the 3 shirts into one to make myself a warm flannel night gown for camping. It worked very well for late night bathroom trips to the outhouse.
How can your nearsies and dearsies bear to let you out of their sight??? You're so cute to watch and they're so generous to share your sunny disposition! Also your casual "derring do" ( I'm 59, I am allowed to say it ) is very confidence making to this Mama. Thank you, pink spot❤
Once again, the “adoorable” dress. The one you made is cute.
This was a fun video! Once the left side of the collar is tucked under like the right, it will be perfection. Thank you for sharing your Deadpool-approved-chaotic-content!
That curving the bias tape with your iron sorcery is MONEY. Simple yet genius. 🤯 Also, you are hilarious. ❤
I remember my mother making my play clothes out of old shirts back in the 1950s. It waa really popular here in the UK in WW2 to use old shirts for dresses. Also making skirts out of old trousers.
Well, that’s the height of chaos sewing indeed. And you make the dress happen. Well done!

@@beverlystauffer2489 I appreciate you and @m.maclellan7147's votes of confidence, but I just found out yesterday that this machine is from 1963. While I've no doubt it will run, despite having not been used since the 90s, because machines from those eras were tanks, I feel like a professional needs to look at it just in case. Plus, Spouse and I would die if something happened to it. But, hey, I'm excited to start my new sewing adventures on a vintage machine!
Yay! A really cool sundress! Great job! You can always make the seam allowance skinnyer ! That is my tip. Just go for it! When you are using clothes to make something new, do what you want! I make it 1/4 inch and just zig zag everything after and you have a secure seam! You really are creative and do some awesome things!! I hope that you are having a great summer!
I love the scallops in the bottom hem - and POCKETS!!!!!!! Good sized ones and cute tiny ones. What fun.
Gurl…..that is the best dress you have ever made on your channel. It’s perfect!! The only thing I would add is some Deadpool buttons on the front. I tell everyone to get a telescoping magnet to help find pins and needles that fall to the floor. Or you can glue some flat magnets to some flip flops and just walk around.

Newbie to your vids. Awesome 👏 Commando style sewing at its finest! Reminiscent of my grandmother sewing beautiful clothes out of virtually any old items… curtains, bed linens, old clothes etc…
Look at you freeform a dress! It looks great 🎉
Just watched the dropped pin escapade, and was reminded of the time my mom found a sewn machine needle the had way! She had basically flipped on the floor and screamed. She had found a machine needle rammed into the space where your knee bends, so right between the cap and leg bone. It was pointy side out. Went to the ER and on X-ray one of the nurses actually knew it was a singer needle! Mom had given that one away 6 years earlier!! My teen self has a lot of fun with Mom high on Vicodin that night! She told everyone she was making a porcupine costume for Halloween.
That is ridiculously cute (yes, cute in the most ridiculous way)! Love it. You may think the purse was the perfect accessory (and it waaassssss), but imo those pearl dangle earrings REALLY sold it. ;) The zipper hits the perfect note, too. Wheeee!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH SPECIALLY WITH THE TACO TRUCK PURSE. SWEET WEEPING BABY CABLE, WHAT A GREAT FIND!
you could make a dress out of sticks and leaves, I’d watch you make it and enjoy it. You are the best ever!!
Coolest dress to date! ⚔️
Another clever salvage video with wordplay? Brilliant!
Loved your story telling! And humor! I was thinking this is what people did all throughout history. Remaking clothes. I don't sew but love your videos.
I did something similar where I turned a couple of old pairs of jeans into a skirt. Having...substantial...thighs, I tend to wear out the inner seams quicker than any other part of the pant. So I cut the legs off of the top part of the jeans (keeping the pockets, zipper, etc.) and then having cut down past the worn crotch parts of each pant leg, created a gored skirt from the pant legs by sewing them back onto the upper part of the pants. Presto! Skirt, formerly pants! It's one of my favorite skirts now. I love upcycling projects! Your dress turned out super cute also!
Stephanie, this is such a cute & creative dress! What’s not to love… cute print, cotton, sun dress, creative use of old shirts. Chefs kiss!😘 ❤
I love how you have a vision and just make it happen, setbacks be damned 🤘🏻
I feel like we might be kindred spirits! I love this dress! I could see a small black tie , ooh or a bow tie attached on the front of the bodice , like it would be worn at the collar. I love the creativity so much!!
I especially like the "scalloped" hem.😊
I have a hilarious story about pins on the floor while sewing. My husband would complain and complain. I kept telling him i'd picked them up but he kept finding them and was frustrated . This kept going on back and forth until one day we were sitting in the living room. And all of a sudden my cat lept up onto the ironing board where my project lay pinned and waiting for the next day's sewing. And what did she do? She started pulling the pins out one by one and dropping them on the floor! She thought it was a great game! And thus i was horrified at the thought of her swollowing one and vindicated all at once. We just looked at one another, mouths gaping in surprise. My husband now believes me when i say, it wasn't me 😂😂😂
I actually gasped when you started cutting the shirt on yourself, I loved this video ❤
This dress is so stinking cute! Love the scalloped bottom.
I love the way you used the collar as - another type of collar!
Cute dress pattern. Sometimes, classic patterns are just the very idea of flattering dressing. Oh, the "shirt tail" hemming for the scallop edge is perfect. Saves a lot of time from sewing a straight hem. Oh, BTW, use a magnet to retrieve any dropped pins from the floor.
I love this chaos gremlin side showing me how to do the thing I thought about doing, but haven't ! Thanks a bunch !
I find it fascinating that you can envision this and make it happen!
I know it’s going to be a fun time when you say it’s going to be chaos 😂
Great chaos build!! I find the more allergic I am, the less groggy I get with Benadryl. Sometimes I'll take half of one to figure out if a face explosion is allergy or starting a cold, if it stops and I'm fine, allergies, if I get kinda groggy, it wasn't allergies.... And my bunny wears the same expression when I'm sewing. If I ignore him long enough he starts chewing things he shouldn't, like my pantleg. That turned out really cute, I especially liked the hemline using the curves from the bottom of the shirts!!
You are so talented. I love the way you utilized the shirt tails at the hemline for that scalloped effect. And I love watching you sew even tho' I have no idea what under stitching is lol. I do miss the shows where you display your patterns one-by-one. Surprises are always fun. June's Journey is one of my favorite games - been playing since 2018.
If you were more into “historical clothes, I’d remind you that “piecing is period” when you struggle to fit patterns on available fabric-but not sure that’s a 50s thing.
Loooooove this dress from mens shirts!!! You never cease to amaze me with the sarcasm, and I laugh sooooooooo hard. You must have a Steph's sit and sew, we would flock there, or I would.....Thanks for the belly laughs.....✌💚
