Making Rachel Maksy's FAVORITE cottagecore vintage pattern but Plus size for
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
First, I want to thank Rachel Maksy for allowing me usage of her footage!
Rachel has a flair for a CERTAIN Gunne Sax sewing pattern, and I just happened to know a friend that had one, and would let me trace her vintage pattern for use (in Atlanta). So after a brief road trip to Atlanta, I was all set to make Rachel Maksy's pinafore but make it plus size! My measurements are currently bust 46" and a waist 38-40".
So in today's video I am making a vintage pattern but sizing up to plus size from a bust 36". Using a vintage sewing pattern from a Gunne Sax Simplicity pattern is no small feat, but come along with me and I will show you how I made my vintage dress.

Way back in 1979, when this pattern was fresh and new, I fell in love with and purchased it. I made the dress out of a matt yellow rose-printed satin, and it was stunning. The heavier-bodied fabric makes all the difference in how the dress turns out, especially in the skirt volume. Now that you have the pattern sized for you, it may be worth giving it another go.
Dimity is too lightweight for the volume of skirt panels. But don't give up on the pattern. You did a fantastic job and it is very flattering on you. Make it again with a slightly heavier fabric and then you can swish to your hearts content. Hope you had a lovely birthday

The part I don't get is why we are dyeing fabric when there's already black fabric out there, with or without the flowers. One of my favorite dresses in this period, quite possibly from the Gunne Sax line or something similar, used the sweetest black fabric with a dainty floral print and I literally wore that thing out.
Laughing so hard at the “stream of consciousness” script because this, in fact, is how Stephanie usually speaks when she’s talking her ideas out loud…

I actually made this dress in 1981 (actually made 3) for bridesmaid dresses for my brother’s wedding. They turned out pretty well. I had a very small bust and waist back in those days, before 4 children. I still have the pattern!
The grey with flowers gives a Persephone vibe that is somehow so much cooler than I thought it would be.
Lmao that you also used music that Rachel often uses. It was worth your trouble to trim the collar. It needed it aesthetically. And Candy and the skirt lights was magic. Totally get why you wanted to use the fabric you did. It’s lovely!

Oh yeah, the upbeat music is from Epidemic Sound (home of the royalty free music) and I love the driving beat to it. And yeah, the trim looks really cool once it is on, but it is THICC!
The cut of the bodice looks very flattering on you in my opinion. In a heavier fabric it would be perfect !

Thank you so much! I do enjoy it and yes, I think heavier fabric would be great!
This pattern was used to make my performance dress for my senior year of HS. My granddaughter wishes I still had that dress.
I remember making that dress in 1980 while in high school. It's a great pattern. I made the full length version using pale blue and white gingham check with white details. I remember fitting it to a padded strapless bra, hahaha, because at 15 I was flat as a pancake. I wore a gored taffeta half slip with it, like a flared petticoat without the ruffles.

When you said disaster struck I was reminded that my sewing machine DIED on the final and fancy stitched hem of my last project. I’m glad that wasn’t your problem too! That was not fun
The Rachel Maksy music at the 3:00 mark was a nice touch. That fabric was hideous. You saved it, IMHO. The final dress was awesome.

Aww thank you! Epidemic Sound for the WIN! I am so glad you enjoyed my take on the dimity.
OMG, this was the exact pattern my Mom used for my prom dress in 1979!! This made my day!
When i was a girl i wore lots of gunnesack dresses. I loved feeling like i could be a vintage princess
Beautiful. The fabric turned out spooky-pretty with the gray color and kind of "ghost flowers" showing through.
My mom made this dress for me in 1982 for my prom. It was green voile (lined) and I loved it!!!
Just wonderful. The Closet Historian and Diane Deziel show how to alter patterns but we would lose the entertainment... Loved this one. Birdy
Oh Kay. I'm almost at minute four. And I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Best use of the dance of madness... possibly ever. Like, you know, fer real. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

Thank you so much! Yeah, I am gonna take a day and decide what to do.
oh my god you totally maksy'd that video down to the music , YOU ROCK
I think the trim is very effective. Yes, please make more tutorials on sizing up and FBA. You are a joy to watch. Even though I'm watching this a long time after it was made I would like to ask for a sway back adjustment. Like you don't have anything else to do! Thank you.
You have literally become one of my favorite KZreadrs for plus size vintage sewing, you are hilarious and I love your videos!!!
I really like the dress on you. I hope you try it again with more appropriate fabric and adjusted for the undergarments you want to wear. I enjoyed watching you swish the skirt, and the jewelry you chose is gorgeous with it.
I have had a Gunne Sax pattern for about 10 years waiting for me to size it up. I have gone up a few more sizes since I got it. It's the same pattern that "aperfecttouch" is using. I was in high school when the Gunne Sax line came out I loved them. I bought a ready made one. but I didn't wear it anywhere until the 80's for my wedding.

I had two Gunne Sax dresses and loved the line. The purple taffeta Gunne Sax "Western showgirl " knee-length dress was worn to every high school dance I thought I could get away with! Loved that one. The other was a full-length ivory lace-covered confection that I wore to my prom. I have no idea what happened to them, but I hope they are well-loved wherever they are. Great dresses!
The kady i babysat for made this dress for my "JR attendant" formal at graduation in 1980. It was baby blue satan w/ white trim. Its the prettiest garmet I've ever owned.
I know this is rather old at this point but and I have no idea how I came across it but as soon as I saw the pattern I knew I had to reach out. This is the same dress pattern that my mom used to make my Junior Prom dress in 1980! We even made it in pink like the pattern envelope show. I bet she even still has the pattern around her house somewhere. Hilarious to find it in use now
I love how the dress came out - especially as a sewer with similar issues in sizing/sewing errors, etc - it really spoke to my personal experiences. I think this dress would be so nice if used with a sheer black under-dress - perhaps in a voile, with long poofy sleeves and skirt, worn beneath the lights - which are genius, by the way. It would be even more "witchy" and romantic.

Oh that is a great idea! Maybe I could do that if I take the dress to somewhere that isn't 80 degree and humid basically year round. 😂
Fantastic job 👏👏 yes please more sizing up videos and if you can make them more detailed ( step by step sizing up the patterns) would be highly appropriate it especially that we have the same measurements so my sewing adventures would be way easier!! 😉😉😂🙏💙

I’m so used to seeing more recent vids, that seeing u with blown out straight hair was a definite double take! I like it….

I’m excited to say that I wore many of many Gunne Sax dresses n formals! It was my absolute favorite line!!! Maybe I should try sewing one for fun!!! 💜
Oh, i LOVE the dress. It looks both goth-y and summer-y and the skirts are excellent. Thanks for sharing this with us! Edit: I hope if you make this pattern again in the future, that you like the dress better the next time!
I think this is super flattering on you -- taking the time to do a proper FBA makes all the difference ( As a small- waisted busty person I have to do this on everything I wear if I don't want it to look like I'm wearing a sack.🤪). Love the trim on the collar, too!
I need to learn how to make a full belly adjustment :P it's always fun to try ot scale patterns to yourself when you're a brick with boobs. You made me laugh more today than I have all week, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes shoves stuff in the Bad Clothing Corner to contemplate what it's done while I go do something else so I have something to show for a day's work, fitting is so dang difficult! It took me a lot of photos and a Zoom meeting with a friend who knows about fitting but I now have a princess seamed bodice block, I am unstoppable! (well, until I try to do one of those curved seams on a machine, then there's a whole lot of language we don't use in front of Grandma..l I'm just gonna stick to my endless hours of handsewing, thanks)

I'm in a spot where I'm trying to relearn everything I had managed to figure out over sewing for 20 years. I'm trying to psyche myself up by repeating "Now I can learn how to do it *right*." Except that's not how things seem to be going. I love the Bad Clothing Corner, so Bad Projects can go and think about what they've done while I do something more satisfying to recover. I'll get back to them, but first I need to regain a Good Self Image and have some tea.
“La Fortuna” is a nice touch.
Absolutely all of your commentary makes me want to be your friend. From the FBA to "whatever-ing" the back to your existential crisis and morning coffee, I relate. Exquisite work. 10/10.
Thank you for taking so much time to show us the finished product! Its my favorite part of these videos, and so often you get just a quick shot or two of the finished garment. So thank you!
Totally understand that this isn't your style, but it's SO PRETTY ON YOU! That trim might have been frustrating but I am LOVING IT! The trim sets the whole dress off and I love the color! Just so in love with this dress on you. 🥰 And the FBA looks great!

Thank you so much Aleta! That means so much to me.
I bet it looks even more amazing with a long black petticoat underneath.
I think this dress is darling on you, it needs a flouncy half slip for day wear but the nighttime lights are a smash. I made a flannel full slip for my new winter dress, it's the proper length and decadently warm. The dress is cute, I want another color. I'm thrilled with sewing clothes again! Losing the bag lady look.
The final dress was so cute (even with the fit issues) and I love the spooky themed videos 🎃. I’m a beginner at sewing and love watching other people sew, it’s so inspiring
Particularly enjoying the saucy ankle content. Nice Bernadette shout out! The dress looks lovely on you. Try layering it over a black dress with a nice floofy petticoat. :)
Thank you so much. It was fun to watch. And special thank´s for the "disaster in 3-2-1". Because I managed to do the exact same thing while sewing a vest for my husband. And undoing the seam I was telling me nonstop : Don´t punch a hole, don`t punch a hole, because there was no fabric left to do any part again... I feel myself so understood and not alone in my chaotic sewing with you. Thank you!
Rachel would be proud! This is amazingly done and really had me giggling.

Gasp!! So many kudos to you for taking a saucy ankle shot!! You rebel, you...
The FBA definitely came out very nice! I resisted doing FBAs for the longest time and just graded out to the "right" size for my bust measurement. And now that I've learned the magic of FBAs, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. I think the dress came out very nice and once you add the underskirt, it will be perfect!

Stephanie, your videos make me laugh out loud, even on days I don’t really feel like laughing at all. Thank you. :D
You are so wonderful Stephanie, I feel I know you. yesterday I had a go at dying a dress navy blue and it's now tie dyed. mmm I have been following along whilst sewing today. It's been a good day however the seam ripper is vey much part of the day. Thank you for your entertaining videos. They make me laugh and reassure me I'm not the only one sewing in chaos and loving (mostly) every minute of it. Greetings from a very cold (by our standards) Sydney Australia Robertaxxx
I made myself this dress pattern when I was a junior in high school. I would love to make it again!
Wow! My mom made this dress for me for Jr prom. Dusty pink with tiny pinstripe of white. White satin for top cuffy collar thing, straps, and waist strap. Very much like the photo on the pattern.
Hey, Stephanie! I love the dress and especially like the lights. Also, the girls are on parade, enjoy it while you can.

@@dawnelder9046 it’s actually the other way round. Better for me to make it for my shoulders and hips (which are usually a 12/14) then just FBA it for my bust (which is usually a 20.) I’d rather FBA than have to draft literally everything else on the pattern. At that point I’m just making the pattern completely from scratch if I bought the size for my bust

I love the fabric after the dye is soo spooky and adams family looking!
Absolutely love how that dress turned out you look great in it. The only flaw that I see as a OCD perfectionist in fit is that the back is too long for your waist. 99.9 per cent of people even sewers won't notice.
How stunning! I love the light-up skirt! And the piping around the straps & bodice is gorgeous! I usually make Harajuku style or use Issey Miyake Vogue patterns, but I enjoy watching everyone else's style. Hope you had a good birthday! 🍩🍩🍩
THE LIGHTS ARE SO COOOOOL. Well done friend!!
