    Deer pressure seems to keep increasing year-on-year at my garden. I'm on the edge of town where people aren't allowed to hunt, I can't exclude them from the perimeter with fencing, so I have to fence things individually now, it's really annoying. Overpopulated deer are a menace (same as humans!).

    I live in the country and don’t hunt. I think the critters come to my wildlife haven to avoid the hunters😂. Its an annoyance I’ve learned to live with.

    I don’t have seeds to share. I do have trees for sale, but local pickup only in Saline,MI. If you know where mature trees are located, you can collect the dry seed pods in fall/winter.

    I was pleased to find your video, as I am looking to get more info on growing Toona Sinensis from seed. As it is now 5 months since you posted your video, I was wondering how you were getting on ? Although I have not tried growing them yet, I have tasted the leaves from a specimen tree over here in the UK and found them to be delicious - although some folk find them a bit too strong in flavour if eaten raw. Nevertheless there is a lot of evidence that they are a) highly nutritious and b) good for your health in a number of ways - which is why they have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. Anyway, good luck with 🌿growing them & ATB from across the pond (🇬🇧)

    If you don't want to boil and wait, put seed pods somewhere dry in the cold of winter, then cut the tiniest bottom of the seed off and soak. I did that this year and thought i ruined the seed after it swelled in 12hrs, the seed shot a root within the next 24hrs. Zone 6 high desert, your results may vary

    Where did you got from hazelnuts for seeds. Planning to build air prune box myself

  • @awakenacres
    @awakenacres6 ай бұрын

    I got 3 seeds to germinate with this method. I had better luck in the spring soaking them and putting them in potting mix in a moist seed tray. About 50% germination. Most grew successfully over the summer/fall in pots. I am overwintering them outside this year and will update in the spring. Hopefully they survive!🌿

    Your plants look great. I suddenly started having chipmunk problems this year which has severely disrupted my nursery area, normally I'd grown hundreds of nut trees per year in air-prune beds, but those damn things have gotten into them and dug up almost everything I've planted, including some rather precious seeds of American chestnut, seeds from my best timber-type chestnut tree, and others. Sprinkling cayenne pepper all over had no effect, so I'm going to have to do more in the way of physical exclusion (they are small enough to go through chicken wire, which was the first thing I tried when I wasn't sure what was getting in there, at first I thought maybe crows). The joys of trying to grow things! Extremely hot and dry here, too-hope we all get some much needed rain soon.

    My Grandparents had over 60 chickens at any one time for years, never had an opossum take a laying hen. Use to find them in the laying boxes, sometimes they would take an egg thought, we just left them alone. Grandpa said they are good to have around, as they keep the rats in check.

    From my experience Aronia berries are pretty forgiving with their harvest window; I've seen them hang on the bush in good condition for a month or more after ripening, similar to some red currants. I even nibble on them throughout the fall and into the winter. I think your purple flower is a type of knapweed (Spotted?) rather than Monarda, though once you get Monarda established you will probably have it everywhere, and both are great for bees. Wild Senna has done a pretty good job of reseeding around my place, too, despite my soil being dry and sandy (Senna likes wetter soils). Your cultivar Elderberries look great! Deer keep mowing mine down to stubs unless I grow them in protected areas. And I haven't noticed anything eating the seeds of Amorpha fruticosa, which are produced copiously, so you should be able to harvest plenty this Fall. Thanks for the tour!

    @@awakenacres unfortunately the plant ID apps do get it wrong fairly often. I sometimes use iNaturalist, but it's not always right, either. I'm a bit too familiar with knapweed because I had an acre or more of it in my back field and have pulled out thousands of them over the years, though now my meadows are getting more diverse so I don't bother with it as much. The buds and spent seedheads look quite different than Monarda, and overall the blooms/petals are smaller. Wild Monarda fistulosa's blooms are also usually a lighter purple lavender color rather than bright purple. The leaves of knapweed are fine and incised and the whole plant doesn't smell/taste like Oregano like M. fistulosa does.

    The one I have I just got last fall and it grew really well this year. It may need another plant for better pollination. They are a cross between gooseberry and currant so similar growth habits. The berry I tried was quite tart so I may have picked it too early.
