BikeFarmer

BikeFarmer

Inspired by Bob Ross, the BikeFarmer videos are more of a 'Watch Me Work' style than a 'How To Fix Bikes" channel, the BikeFarmer videos will follow lifelong shop owner and mechanic, Andy Q as he works through bicycle projects, mostly refurbishing used bikes for resale, but also anything related to shop life. This channel is designed for anyone with an interest in bicycle bicycle tuneups, repair, used bicycle refurbishing. I don't claim to know the best methods for any of this, but I am a professional bicycle mechanic at a small town shop specializing in practical bicycles and general purpose bikes for everyday people. I'd love to see feedback, comments and discussions on all aspects of my work. Hopefully I'll learn as much you do. Every bike has its own set of circumstances and problems to work through. Whether you're looking for some informative nap time fodder or wanting to start flipping or repairing bikes for a living, it's my hope you'll find what you need here.

I really enjoy your videos but watching you work I sometimes wonder if you're aware that Triflow is basically just PFAS suspended in a solvent. It may work really well and smell like artificial banana flavor but it's pretty gnarly stuff in that it doesn't break down in the environment and we're really only beginning to understand all the potential health effects. I sometimes worry when I think about how much of that stuff I've absorbed through my skin over the years. I've personally switched to Boeshield T9 which is paraffin based and makes a pretty effective replacement. Sorry, I've been biting my tongue for awhile now but watching you spray that rack down was my breaking point 😬

but just to add - i agree with a lot of this too. if you can't afford a ferrari, or don't know how to work on one yourself, don't buy one. and if you do buy one, accept that it's either going to be a headache or extremely expensive

28:45 Your not a bad explainer, it's that most adults in 2024 dont know what an allen wrench is, how to change a tire, or have the remotest idea of what preload could possibly be. Theyre not dumb either, they just have little to no desire to learn any of these things as long as you take Visa, Master Card, or American Express

I absolutely love your philosophy. I’ve had everything from very entry level bikes to a $8000 custom built bike and after 35 years of cycling I learned to not spend so much money and simply enjoy the fun of cycling. I love messing with the idiots who buy extravagant “Superbikes” and don’t even have the stamina or ability to ride them efficiently. I have three bikes now and none of them are over $1000 and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my cycling life. Thanks for the awesome video and I will subscribe to your channel. 👍

I think this bike would have sold better without the auto shift. Three speed hub shifters are simple and allow you to control shifting. The dynamo should power lights.

Regarding bike computers, I had two bikes, each with a computer. I found that the settings chart wasn't 100% accurate, so I removed the front wheel, taped a flexible metric tape around the highest point of the tire, all the way around, to arrive at a precise number of millimeters at which the set the computer. One night I put a rechargeable light on the handlebar of one bike and took it for a ride. The computer didn't work. So I swapped the computers from one bike to the other, and it still didn't work. Next, I swapped the sender units, and it still didn't work. Then I discovered that if the light was closer than six inches to the computer, it blocked the signal from the sender. Turning the light off solved the mystery. So I moved the computer a bit further from the light and it was fine. Oddly, the light on my other bike didn't affect the computer, no matter how close it was.

Now imagine yourself a normal person, completely lacking problem solving skills or the ability to understand electromechanical systems on any level, so you take your overly accessorized contraption into a bike shop and ask me to go through that. How could that ever be profitable?

Im actually riding the micronew levers for years now on my DIY gravel bike. They work great, but I used a 105 road front derailler, because its not compatible with mtb deraillers. And XT in the back. For the brakes I chose mini V, they have the right pull ratio
