    Why written music is the problem? Would it not be using the concert songs and transpose 2 semitones down for Bb instruments or 3 semitones up for Eb instruments?

  • @dustinhellen
    @dustinhellen8 күн бұрын

    Yes, you can transpose concert pitch a major 2nd up (2 semitones) for soprano/tenor and a minor 3rd down (3 semitones) for alto/bari, but it is difficult for many people to do this instinctively while they read concert pitch. You see a concert F for example, and you have to think "G" and make sure you are in the right key while you play. I mentioned in the video that parts that are specifically written for soprano are sparse. This is why it is nice to play music written for other more common instruments in the key of Bb, like trumpet or clarinet, like I mentioned.

    @@lanphanh No problem! Look on KZread for songs you like that are written for saxophone. It will give you a backing track and the music on the screen already transposed for you so you can just play with it. For example, you can type something like "Careless Whisper tenor sax" and it will give you a few that have the sheet music with the backing track, already transposed for tenor.

    @@lanphanh Jody Jazz is a top-quality jazz mouthpiece maker. The one I play is gold-plated, so that racks up the price quite a bit. You don't need that though if you just want a free-blowing mouthpiece. I found Claude Lakey to be a great company that has some really great free-blowing mouthpieces. i previously owned a Selmer SA80 II and now use a Yamaha Custom Z Mark II with a Theo Wanner Brahma 7* mouthpiece and this setup is powerful. There’re definite sounds differences between two, but it’s also about response and feedback from the horn and of course feel and key action. My alto is a Yanagisawa AW030 and plays very well top to bottom which is why I may consider a Yanagisawa Tenor in the future.

    I own both. From my own testing, and listening to another player with my instruments, from out in the audience I could not hear a difference. Sitting in my sax quartet, the other players say they can hear me on the curved soprano better. When I play the curved it sounds brighter to me because the bell is aimed u at my face, but nobody else hears it except up close. The curved is better for playing into a mic on a stand, just like alto or tenor. The straight is harder to mic in a live performance. You really need the double mic setup. I've played soprano sax for about 50 years.

    Do you have a video on how maybe different brands of mouth pieces might change the tone. I read that Stan Getz used a certain brand of hard rubber mouth pieced or actually different brands of hard rubber mouth pieces I think to get different tonal qualities. Maybe the mouth pieces makes a difference in the tonal qualities between the Selmer and the Yamaha? I was looking online and saw some hard rubber mouth pieces really get pricey. For someone like me does it really matter? Maybe in a month i might be able to play a tune like row row row your boat! Anyway I hooked to laptop to better speakers and am amazed how good the YTS-23 sounds. What mouth piece do you use for it. Is it the factory one?

Anyway, I've been pretty ill with sinus and ear infections but after watching your video I am setting a goal to get better and to start learning and playing this great instrument.The meds I'm on aren't really doing it for me but i am now setting a positive goal to feel better, I'm praying to the Lord above and also thinking being positive will really really help me.
