Kinda hard pinpointing what made me a furry. I've just considered myself one ever since a friend mentioned them years ago in 6 or 7 grade. If I had to choose, it'd be either Puppy in my Pocket or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I remember watching reruns of Puppy in my Pocket every morning before going to elementary school. I also remember watching new episodes of FIM. Also lots of other stuff like pokemon and that one werewolf show that Disney channel had.

Older furry here, for me it was warrior cats. I read the books and was annoyed at certain scenes - they need a different cat to step in to fix the problem the protagonist had. So i made that cat. The idea of making a character and creating the world around it... Its a lot of fun, so i kept adding more to them. Then i just kept adding more character to interact with them. More personalities, more designs, species, worlds, languages annnd everything spiraled. Creating stuff is fun. Explore your skill in everything art related: drawing, animating, sculpting, voice acting, etc. Maybe you can make this your job or your lifetime hobby. Good luck ✨️ (Also, welcome! If you make a video on why you picked out your fursona - could we get a full reference of them. Id love to make you some fanart.)

Not a true furry, made a fursona in jr. high (bobcat); never stuck with it. Got my start watching Disney, specifically Robin Hood. Although the other movies and shorts featuring anthro or just humanized animals brought me closer. Ex made a few pieces to a fursuit (winged wolf) before we split. Towards the end of our relation, our son got into Proto-gens and part of me hopes he doesn't go down that proverbial rabbit hole. Ex and I are degenerates that grew up browsing the 4Chan boards and Yahoo and AIM Private Chatrooms way younger than we should have and we worry about him falling in with the worse aspects of fandoms. She having first-hand experience, I never went further than a superficial understanding that the fandom exists. Stay on the safe side of the fandom, only go into the deep end when you are mature enough and keep yourself safe. Keep drawing and always seek to improve yourself.

Pretty sure your experience with your ex damaged your view on the fandom. If they made your suit, most likely they were a lot deeper into the fandom then you were. The fandom is fine, just like any fandom it can have issues. Kids making characters and making stories around them isnt harming anyone. If anything it helps with their crafting and writting skills while making friends. Im an old furry and ive avoided 4chan and other harmful places just fine. I'm sorry you and your ex werent able to avoid those sites. The way this creator described joining the fandom is safe. Watching youtube shorts is fine and making stories about a fantasy character because of your cat is also fine. As an adult, the furry fandom i joined as a kid keeps my sanity stable as an adult. Lifes hard and after work its such a relaxing thing for your brain to sketch out a silly cat and give it a story. Im very greatful for this community repeatedly telling me to not loose my creativity and wonder. ❤

Thinking back on it, definitely Tail Concerto for the PS1 for me. Not only had I never seen furries like that, but also introduced me to anime as well (anime was definitely not well known in the late 90's 😅)

Some travel advice from a non-furry who happens to be a seasoned road warrior: Ditch the "just in case" items when you are packing. Seriously. In my years of traveling for work I can count the number of times that I actually used one of those items I brought "just in case" on one hand. And even then it was not really worth the dead weight I was schlepping around. An extra pair of socks and underwear? Yeah sure, why not. But avoid bringing everything bar the kitchen sink "just in case". Outside of your fursuit, think "outfits" as opposed to individual articles of clothing. Don't bring "that one shirt because you find it cute" unless you have an outfit that it will match. Otherwise all that is wasted space that is better used for con swag and souvenirs. If you want to go out for a meal with one certain group, arrange that well in advance of the con. Ask around who is game, and make a reservation at the place of your choice. Set up calendar files and a chat group, so everyone has the time and opportunity to be ready on time, or inform the group if they cannot make it for some reason. Set a time and a place to meet (eg. meet at 6 pm at the reception desk), and then leave on time. As Agent K said: "Be there or be square". Spontaneous outings tend to crash and burn without a set time and place because you end up waiting for at least an hour before everyone is there and you actually get to go. Person A wants to take a quick shower before leaving and says they will be back in 10 minutes, but end up taking 30, person B needs to pop back to their room to get a jacket, but takes 40 minutes to come back because on the way they bumped into someone they haven't seen in years and wanted to catch up, person C is desperately trying to find their "plus one" but they won't answer their phone or text messages and person D just is nowhere to be found even though they really, really wanted to go. You know how this goes. Sure, things can happen spontaneously. This is normal. But some degree of planning ahead can make everything a whole lot less stressful for everyone involved..
