We are walking the 214 Wainwright summits across England's glorious Lake District - for the second time - and filming them all. We have walks for all abilities, from long days on the hills, to gentle bimbles - big mountains to small hills and simple lakeside paths. We have films in the sun, the rain and the snow - sometimes on the same day! We hope you enjoy our films, and find them inspiring for your own adventures.
If you would like to see us cover a particular hill, visit us at www.onyvafilms.com, and let us know.
Stay safe, and see you on the hills!

Done it today, steep climb
What an amazing film. Cheers! (or rather chin chin)
Thank you! To a delightful weekend in the country!
Hello friend, I hope you are well. We are going to climb Skiddaw in August, but we would want an easier route that avoids the hard portion. Any recommendations?😅
The "classic" way up Skiddaw is probably from the car park/gate by Latrigg - it's not terribly steep, but it is long, and some find it a little boring. Great views back over Keswick and Derwentwater, though, so definitely not to be sniffed at! Alternatively, you could reverse the end of this walk, and go up via Bakestall, get to the top and go back, but that's also quite a long walk... Hope that's of some help - on a good day, any way up Skiddaw is worth the effort!
I have just found your channel (liked & sub'd) and love this video. I definately want to walk your route with my partner and look forward to watching more of your videos. Any advice on where to park? I have tried zooming in on OS maps, but cannot see anything clearly marked. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I parked in a small parking bay on the road heading towards Orthwaite. Hopefully you can click on this link, and it will take you straight to it: goo.gl/maps/3nQvoPVa2S4AGRJZ9 All the best, Neil
Catbells was my first Wainwright a couple of months ago. Epic views, but i absolutely hated that walk back down, my knees were not happy with me when i finshed. Although i was lucky enough to have the summit all to myself for approx 20 minutes
Fantastic! Always nice ot have the top to yourself! Hope you enjoy other Wainwrights in future. All the best
In 1965 my wife and I whilst on our honeymoon first discovered Friar's Cragg and did this walk many times in later years. We always enjoyed looking for the low water marks and sitting on the end bench devouring the splendid view of the lake. We have 59 years of happy memories of walking in Lakeland but sadly can no longer walk far but still managed to enjoy the valleys.
Thanks for letting us know - glad to hear that you're still enjoying the Lakes. Best wishes
How long did it take you to complete please?
Hi. It's about a 10 mile walk, and around 3,430 ft/1,045 m of ascent, and is a long day... Possibly 8 - 10 hours, depending on speed and how many breaks you take!
Planning to do the Cumbria Way next summer, so definitely going to deviate at Hawse End and climb up Cat Bells instead to get those great views. It's great to see this video to see what to expect.
That sounds great. There's a clip of the descent down Hawse End in our film of the Newlands Round (and bits of the Cumbria Way here and there in several other films!) Hope you have a good day/days for it - enjoy!
Lovely walk. Superb video. Well played, sir
Thank you!
Great video mate, quite tempted to do this route next time I'm in the lakes 👍
Thank you - definitely recommended! Would be even better on a day when you can see the top of High Street, but we can’t have everything!
Are there any bbq/picnic areas here? If so how close are they to the car park? Thankyou
😂Techno bird.
Completed this one last week. It was my first Wainwright! I parked by Legburthwaite and followed the path from the south. I wish i saw this video first because that path was pants. Lots of scrambling. Thanks for the video 🐴
Oof! That's a tough way up! Hope you had a good day, though!
Thanks for taking us along with you. Lovely walk.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Im at morecambe bay
Just finished this route yesterday and took a 1hr trek to/fro Lonscale Fell as a 'bonus' Wainwright from Skiddaw Little Man, your recommendation of using the lesser-trodden path on the western side of Skiddaw to miss out the entirety of the climb up Skiddaw-South was very much welcome once getting to the top of Carl Side and seeing the wall of scree that was ahead.
Glad to hear it was helpful!
Always enjoy your videos - thanks for sharing - my wife and I did the walk a few days after you did it. I think the view from Low Fell looking east is one of the best in Lakeland.
Thank you - greatly appreciated. It's a lovely, if slightly underrated hill. Glad you enjoyed the film! Neil
You said it yourself. Absolutely beautiful. That's a fantastic view from Low Fell. A super little walk. I think it's one for my two young grand children to do. Spot on! It's one I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Yes, it would be a great walk for younger explorers - spectacular views to make up for not too much hiking!
Thank you for the time spent descending Swirrel Edge!
Any time!
Thank you!
Thank you!
I have unfinished business with this Horseshoe. I attempted a solo hike on 22nd July 2023, My grandpa had passed away the day before after suffering quite severely with Dementia in his last few weeks. I needed time to myself the following day to let it all sink in. Getting out on the fells is my way of resetting myself mentally and I was training fr the national 3 peaks challenge I had coming up in the September so I wanted to test myself. I started at 7:30 and the weather was wet with zero wind, 100meters up grizedale and I could only see 5-10 meters around me due to the mist. Summited Grizedale and literally stood there for five mins…….. couldn’t hear anything, no wind at all, no noise other than my breathing, it was pretty surreal to be honest. Carried onto Crag hill, soon as I got up to the bottom of that all hell broke loose, weather went crazy, was getting blown over by the wind and I tripped over a rock and I slid down towards the valley for about 10 meters however that could’ve been more or less, happened quickly, I smashed my ankle on another rock and stopped. I hadn’t seen a single sole throughout the hike and still couldn’t see anymore than 10-15 meters max in all directions. Self preservation kicked in and I went straight down literally on my arse until I reached the path. I’m going back there to finish what I started. The weather can change instantly up on the fells.
Terrific!
Thank you!
Thank you! I really like the shots of the trails mixed in with the viewpoints. Wonderful!
Thank you very much!
The best walking channel around ❤ Pop into my shop in windermere next time you’re passing for a free beard trim 😊
Thank you! Will definitely say hi the next time I’m passing! All the best, Neil
Another great video! Welcome back! 🙂
Thank you! 😃
Watched this video again today as it brought back happy memories of when i did most of this route over fifty years ago.I did an Outward Bound course at Ulswater,.We climbed Helvelyn from most directions but this route still sticks in my mind. Thanks for taking me back there.Brilliant.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely! Wonderful!
Many thanks!
Fabulous!!
Thank you!
Beautiful scenery. Doing my very first self guided walk there this December. Can't wait!!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Looks like a great walk. We're familiar with some of the Lake District but this has opened our eyes to new views. Thanks again!
One of the advantages of "Doing the Wainwrights" is that it takes you to areas of the Lakes you might not otherwise visit - this is definitely worth a slight diversion!
Hello. How long did this hike take you in total? Thankyou
Hello! This is probably a 4 - 5 hour walk (depending on conditions).
besides making us really sad we are here rather than there, it was an incredible walk that will be on our next visit list. dare i say belting.......
Thank you! Belting, indeed!
Quality content as always, Neil. Perfect timing as well, I have those two fells on my radar over the next couple of weeks.
Thank you so much - hope you get as good a day as I did! Enjoy!
Great evening walk along the parths or paths. Great views and weather too.
It's an underrated gem of a walk!
Y I'm newly subscribed to your channel and I have to say your films are relentlessly brilliant! Please could you highlight parking locations/options for busy summertime periods and please could rate your pies? lol
Thank you so much! Yes, I'll try and add some notes on parking in the description - good suggestion, thank you. Maybe I should set up a separate channel for pies... All the best
Lovely walk. Where do you recommend is the best place to park? Looks like there is a layby that could hold 3 or 4.
Thank you - as mentioned when we spoke on Twitter, this is probably best - www.google.com/maps?q=Cockermouth+CA13+0RP&ftid=0x487cd1a40ec8a12b:0x18cce9b25170d42c&entry=gps&lucs=,94212212,47071704,94206166,47069508,94214172,94218641,94203019,47084304,94208458,94208447&g_ep=CAISDTYuMTE4LjAuNjQ0MDAYACDXggMqWiw5NDIxMjIxMiw0NzA3MTcwNCw5NDIwNjE2Niw0NzA2OTUwOCw5NDIxNDE3Miw5NDIxODY0MSw5NDIwMzAxOSw0NzA4NDMwNCw5NDIwODQ1OCw5NDIwODQ0N0ICR0I%3D&g_st=ic

Thank you, both! All the best
Really enjoyed that lovely walk stunning views. Thank-you xx
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
I'm really jealous !
Afternoon Neil, what a cracking little walk, loved that. Hope you enjoyed your pie and pint. haha All the best Dave
Thanks, Dave!
Hi there, thanks for sharing. I would love to drive this route but I have Acrophobia ( fear of heights) when hiking or climbing in mountainous terrain ! does any part of this route close to cliff? please advise.
There are a couple of points where there are some slight drops near the road, but no serious cliffs. The road basically follows a valley up and another down, so you shouldn’t be exposed at any point. Worth checking out this, and our other film of the route from the other direction, before you go, to make sure. It’s not the steepest drive in the Lakes. Good luck!
❤❤
Thanks for sharing. I would love to drive this route including Honister pass but i experience fear and anxiety when I think of tall heights or positioned at a significant height! does any part of this route close to cliff? please advise.
Hi is this walk dog friendly please? (Off lead) looks beautiful!
Largely, I'd say, although there are a couple of sections on the road, and obviously look out for sheep! Definitely several areas that are great for a scamper (and swimming)!
or horse 🙃
I fell in love with the Lake District on my first of two crossing along the Coast to Coast way back in the mid 1980s. Derwent water away from the hustle and bustle of the road is very peacefull and relaxing, but I have only ever done it from Keswick to Borrowdale and visa versa, but later in the year I will attempt a full circuit with my trusty Canon Camera and tripod to stock up on some photographic Memories for the time I know will come when I can no longer hike the Fells, Valleys and Mountains in the area. There is nothing more relaxing for me than a two weeks ramble round the Lake District than a Lakeside stroll on my way to Borrowdale and Stonetwaite Campsite, for a weeks hiking or the hike back to Keswick to catch the Coach back to flat Essex. Now I am retired I am planning another visit this summer to recharge my Memory Banks with the scenic Beauty of Derwent Water and Borrowdale. Now I am retired I may even change from my normal camping routine at and opt for B&B. Thank You LDF for the video. Tony in Essex.
Thanks, Tony. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@LakeDistrictFilms I never get tired of seeing the Lake District either in real life or the the eyes and camera work of others. Staay SAFE and Happy Rambling. Tony in Essex
Great. I have done the other side. Pooley bridge to Glenridding. Planning to do the side you have done. Thanks
They're both great, although different in their own ways! Hope you enjoy.
This looks like an amazing route! Do you remember how many hours this took you by any chance?
Probably took me about 9-10 hours, but the process of filming always adds to the length of a normal walk. I'd budget for about 8 hours, perhaps.
I've been visiting the lakes since 1989 on and off (more on than off) . This year will be my ninth summer holiday in a row and I never get tired it: ther are mountains, hills, woodland and forest, and of course beautiful lakes. I sometimes travel a little outside the lake district on days off from strenuous walking and go to the sea. The small town of Silloth is very pleasant if a little olde worlde-there aren't many shops but there is a cobbled main street and a sea front facing the Solway firth with a view of Scotland across the water. A little along the coast is Allonby Bay-largely deserted and peaceful but with stunning views especially of the lakeland mountains in the distance. As I say, the whole area has something for the outdoor minded person.
And I forgot ( how could I ) the wonderful waterfalls and tarns.
Wow. You first inspired me to do Haystack a few weeks back and now im going to come back and do this hike. What a great video.
Thank you so much - that's great to hear! Hope you enjoy it - let is know how you get on!
