Blue jeans were invented in America for the mines, the look is about stripping an immigrant population of their individuality to make a unified class of workers to extract wealth from. Fashion has come from bottom-up in terms of socioeconomic status via Black peoples culture being so impressive to the recently culture-stripped white immigrants descendants (traded their culture for the term "white") and the nature of diversity in America's "melting pot" that still isolated the Black community to be distinctly its own (doesn't blend into whiteness, Hispanic, Asian, etc) while also distinctly American brought many to emulate what was "cool" (you can see the socioeconomic bottom-up fashion impressions also in stuff like sagged pants becoming popular from prison clothes, street wear from those within cities without cars, the blue jeans and t shirt, etc). Then American imperialist industry boom the world has American working class trends. Love this video thank you.

Also pants are generally just more popular in colder climates (another reason why global trends are bad.. it's so insane for people in southern US and Australia to be dressing the same as people in northern US and Europe just bc they're all white)

I was so glad when you got to the part about all colors looking good on Black people, bc in the beginning when you were showing examples of that I kept thinking yes they can pull off anything but what if there's a color that pops even more?! I think that less flattering colors can be sneakier on dark skin because melanin just always looks healthier, it's harder to look washed out, so the effect is more subtle but there none the less... Especially when it comes to being torn between similar seasons like winter or summer I definitely wouldn't worry about it. The biggest point is the warm or cool tone and Then it breaks down into more and more subject sections from there... Which I think that a person with dramatic contrast with darker/richer hair and darker eyes can better pull off the both the warm/cool seasons, than a person with low contrast can pull off their sister-warm/cool season. .............I came to this video bc interest in seasons, but I love how much else this video also covers and I am sad some people will miss all the discussion about trends and history bc they think it will only be about seasons!

I think we need to start a petition to make sure Khensani is the costume designer for the live action Princess and the Frog. I don’t mean to punish you 😅 but I’d love to see your take on Tiana’s green wedding/transformation dress.

That clip at the beginning of this videos really irritates me, I'm gonna wear the colors I LOVE, whether it's May or January or whatever! I like dark winter colors, not neon and pastels.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on “Mr. Malcolm’s List”. They took colorblind casting to the extreme. Very few of the family relations make any sense and it’s very funny. Overall fun movie too.

Wow! As someone who has always been creative and drawing clothes, being inspired by my life and experiences from Scandinavia as well as West-Africa, I am so glad I found and watched this video! In my consideration of learning new indigenous skills in exchange for physical work as well as online promotion, I was wondering how to share designs without feeling snubbed or missing out on an opportunity to blow up as a designer and profit. "What if someone takes my design and profits without me?" I'd feel used and abused to a degree. Genuinely agree with you that it is so important to remember that this is a community effort. From the plants that were once planted, harvested and turned into yearns that I'll be weaving with and eventually having it turned into a garment. This is a process I'd rather do with passionate people and reap the rewards of together. I think in this modern world we really have missed out on an integral aspect of our human nature, which is community or even that tribal unity that we once had. I think this is a reason why we seek recognition and celebration which society paints "wealth and fame" as the ultimate state for satisfying this crave. I think being able to support a local business or group of people or even town will feel more satisfying and rewarding than having lots of money and being more sheltered and alone in a business oriented lifestyle. Not to say that you can't be wealthy and business oriented and also be social and make a positive difference.

Omg yes yes yees! I'm researching natural textiles from Africa and it's so frustrating to have holland produced fabrics show up in my search!! Love how thorough and honest you are! I'm very interested in finding out about plants that grow in Africa, that can have been or can be used for natural textiles.

I had never heard of quilting as an only way of providing structure in undergarments, but it really looks great! It must be incredibly comfortable and could probably distribute a fair bit of skirt weight on its own as well. Very interesting and fun short, thanks!
