Hello, I'm Matthew Encina. I'm a creative director, designer, and educator. I create content about living by design, and I share how that manifests in different parts of my life- home, work, and habits.
I’m a Filipino-American, born and raised in Los Angeles, and I've been a creative professional for over 20 years- directing, designing, and telling stories for some pretty awesome clients. I love to rock climb, breakdance, play video games, drink coffee, and nerd out on mechanical keyboards and comic books.

what kind of track saw are you using?
I enjoyed so much this video that I forgot my dinner was heating up in the kitchen 😅. Likely I was on time
😅
I love how you guys use the card board models, is there like a term for those in the product world. Also how would you apply this to like making possibly furniture.
I think they're just called "cardboard mockups/models"? But you can use any material to help you sketch/prototype ideas. I know the folks over at Bludot also use cardboard to create mini models of their furniture as well.
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience! TL;DR: You improved Encore with team feedback, but more important is: User Feedback! Steve Jobs starts with the customer /user experience & goes back to the product. The product can never be as ergonomic or satisfying as it looks, if the process does not involve "user testing" or ask for "user preferences". eg: Find people desiring wooden keyboards, interview them .. prototype, test .. iterate. That's why every startup advice is almost the same: "Talk to your users early", "Know what people would pay for". Again, thanks for sharing!
Totally. That's why I spent three years in the hobby, learning about the preferences of others and my own, before designing this board. The anecdotes from that study were very helpful for connecting the dots on this project. Moving forward, I'll now have the keyboard in real users' hands for additional feedback for future iterations or products.
Love enjoying your videos while having dinner, so calming!
Cheers
ahaha bro I hope you don’t print messages from the messenger to read 😂 But seriously, why so much waste paper? we planned to save the planet
No wasted paper here. It helps effectively communicate my idea for this video.
I’ve always wanted to design a keyboard of my own, never had the courage to do it until now… from this video.
Glad this gave you the push. Enjoy the process.
Hey Matthew, great video. Not sure if you'll see this, but I like on you panned the camera to show your computer screen. This this helpful for things like showing Notion or other software in use. What tips do you have to make those videos more interesting than simply recording the screen?
Thanks. Two ways off the top of my head: 1. Cut away to b-roll that shows the results of what you're doing. 2. Use animation to give more emphasis and visual stimulation.
Good work. But many of you product designers should understand the impact of the product you design to sell by analyzing how effective it is, how healthy it is for our environment, how useful it is, and why it is so unique to other products? Also, product designers should understand the power of competition.
Yes, those are things one can measure.
Production is accessible globally?!?! Any one can help me with product im in Algeria
A little research goes a long way. You can find many manufacturers of goods on Alibaba.
Lovely finish!
Thanks!
so cool bro. fans

Are the sheets of papers reusable?
No. But the whiteboard that I use to do the diagrams in this video are. Those are linked in the desciption.
Nice collaboration ❤
Thanks
Did you actually model in a tablet? I find it so difficult to do anything without a mouse.
I prefer desktop, but the iPad experience on Shapr3d is pretty intuitive if you haven't tried it yet. FYI, I moved to working in Fusion360 mid-way through the project, as I detailed in the full-length video.
Ooh, IKEA just released a new wall divider on wheels that looks like this (Mittzon), would be a great IKEA hack to add their peg boards on one side like you did here
Oh I’ll have to look it up. Thanks for sharing
Beautiful! Well done 💫
Thank you
Does the green come in light oak by any chance?
Not currently. If we do more, I might consider that color combo.
let's go!!
🙌🏽🙏🏽
Can you provide me the screen clock installation link
It's in the description.
I thought the home office makeover was elite, now this !
There's a whole world of custom high-end mechanical keyboards.
I got the same camera for the same reason too…
🙌🏽
Thank you Matthew for sharing this. As always, love the way you document the process. Thoughtful and beautifully made both products, promotional materials, and documentary. Appreciate you sharing this :)
You’re welcome. 🙏🏽
The long-form video of the origin of this design is exceptional. I really appreciate your patience. We use things that we don't often ponder how they are developed.
Glad you can appreciate it 🙏🏽
What's the dot grid sheet that you are using?
I've linked it in the description for you.
The green one!! 🤩😩
It’s become my favorite
Came at the perfect time, been delaying starting my KZread channel for 4+ years but have been making moves more of recent and looking to have my first video out a month from now.
🙌🏽
Oh my god. The sound profiles are amazing!
🙌🏽
Love that you utilize natural light
The best kind of light
Hello, Wow, Congratulations Cool 👍👏👏👏 Brilliant. Smart.
Thanks
i spot the Dieter Rams book. Really appreciate the video, Matthew and Mode Keyboards team
👌🏽🙏🏽
Love this so much, Matthew! It's really inspiring and might be just the push I need to learn how to design a board myself :D
Go for it. It’s a fun process to learn.
It came out so good man! The green keycaps mesh with the wood so well. Wild to see the collab.
Thank you so much
Hey Mat, Its two months ago I recognized somewhere on a discord channel that something wonderfull will hit the market soon: Encore - Walnut/Copper/Green. I felt in love instantly. And now I can't believe I was really that lucky snagging one. Now I'm waiting to get this wonderfull on my desk. Want to say thank you.
Congrats on snagging one. Thanks for supporting the project!
What is the cost?

Absolutely love the aesthetic of your designs, so so classy and elegant <3
Thank you so much
I wish these were not a limited drop😢
Me too, but they’re very expensive to finance.

Beautiful, incredible product and graphic design work
Thank you so much.
I know it’s kind of a promotion, but I still love your videos about the keyboard. You can really see that you do this for the purpose of creating your version of a premium keyboard. You can tell how much passion and work goes into this project.
I’m glad you can appreciate the details 🙏🏽
做的太好了,真诚而扎实的内容!
Thank you
Inspiring man! Good Job
Thanks
Your video serves as a great piece of inspiration for me, someone who wants to move into the product design field to help to bridge the gap between engineering and artistic design. Studying for my AB interdisciplinary engineering degree I hope to share this video with others to give them some insight into this somewhat niche field which I feel is not explored enough in academia. Amazing content, you're hugely inspirational.
I appreciate that. Being in the creative field for so long has allowed me to compound and overlap my skills in interesting ways. Keep exploring, there’s so many interesting areas to discover.
You mention drawing as a communication skill at about 17:30. Any suggestions on resources for the artistically challenged on learning some basic sketching techniques for product design? I get by with my terrible doodles, but I'd like to be able to put an idea in my head onto paper with better detail.
I looked up “car design sketching” and “industrial design sketching” on KZread. There are a lot of good resources that pop up under there that teach you how to warm up, construct shapes, build detail, then render them out. I’m still working through the first 3 and haven’t gotten to rendering yet.
Very satisfying!

I love most of the mode products but I live in bangladesh and they don't ship here. Also i am poor
It’s a luxury. Spend wisely.
@@MatthewEncina agreed
One with the number pad (right side) included will be great
That would be
