Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art
Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art
My name is Zara Toms, based in Hampshire in the UK. I specialise in detailed pet portraits and wildlife art in pastels and acrylics. My KZread channel is packed full of painting & drawing tips and techniques. If you're beginning your art journey, a hobbyist or an advanced artist I'm always happy to answer any art related questions. If you'd like to grow and develop your art further I offer in depth, considerably slower, often real time tutorial in pastels and acrylics on my Patreon. My Patreon has a large range of domestic pets for members who are looking to expand into pet portraits themselves. With a range of breeds demonstrating the tips and techniques I use to transfer into their own portraits. There is also a wide range of wildlife subjects so there is something for everyone :).
I upload videos to KZread every Tuesday & Saturday.

@miriamsargent3428 thank you so much that's really kind ❤️
Those are great whiskers. Will try the "eraser" tip when painting.
I've been waiting for a video like this! Thanks so much!! I'll for sure take these tips with me into the next (or current) painting.
Thank you your videos are always so helpful❤
@namastan5580 thank you so much. So pleased to hear that ❤️
Amazing 🤩
Awesome work!💯
Nice! Something I’ve struggled with.
I will MOST DEFINITELY be checking out your patreon! So I VERY recently started painting and totally by accident. I did a photo transfer of a friend’s dog and the details and color in his fur, just did not show through at all. So I thought “hmmm maybe I’ll add some acrylic paint here and there to make it pop”. Wellllllll 2 weeks later I ended up with a completely painted canvas lol. I’ve had several friends ask if I’d do their pets as well. They think I’m so talented but really, I’m just painting over what’s already there. I try to tell myself I’m not cheating, because when these transfers come out there’s always so much paper left over and MOST details are not even noticeable, especially the eyes. I try to tell myself, it’s just a quicker way to map out what I’m painting 😬 but I feel like a fraud. 🤦🏼♀️. Anyway, I LOVE your videos, they’ve helped me bring my paintings (aka photo tranfers 😂) to life! I do have a question though. I’ve only done these on wood surfaces. The first one I ever did, I sealed with mod podge, hoping it would bring some color back in (before I decided to paint it) and NOPE it did not so I painted OVER the mod podge. However, on the second pet painting, I didn’t seal it with mod podge first and it didn’t seem to catch as many details, no matter what I did. Did the mod podge act like the gesso? Is it ok if I apply the mod podge rather than the gesso? Sorry such a long post, I felt like I needed to add some context to WHY it was sealed with mod podge first lol. Also, I do not charge my friends for these paintings, it’s really just something that brings me so much joy to see their reactions. ❤❤
Excellent! I learned quite a lot. Thank you for sharing!
I wonder why beautiful artists such as urself don't sell your services to those of us who would love to hire you???
Fantastic work! Very realistic, thank you for sharing your knowledge
i love your work so much. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. i really struggle with shadows on blond dogs. example would be a bull mastiff with part of the head in shadows. I think i am just thinking too much. Any tips? Thank you
I watched this on a BIG screen today and what a difference that made!! (vs my cell phone screen) Thank you thank you thank you!! This will help me SO much on the drawing I am currently working on. (A tan/ mostly white dog with short hair) I seem to get a little stuck after my base layers down and introducing the pencil work is where I kinda crumble. Very helpful!
So beautiful!!!❤❤❤
Thank you ❤️

Fabulous work! Can I please ask what kind of vacuum you're using to collect the loose pastel dust?
It's just my household shark hoover with a car cleaning attachment on the end 😊
Such a sweet puppy! Hope to be half as talented as you someday..been working on graphite drawings and haven’t used my pastels in a long long time..makes me want to revisit them! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you so much that's very kind ❤️. Definitely give them another go 😁. Wonderful medium to work in.
Gorgeous! ❤❤❤ Can't lie, I'm totally jello that you have a horse, and such a beautiful one at that! 😂
I've been trying so hard once I do an overall value underpainting to concentrate on small sections. I can see how it is so much better and how the results are better too! Beautiful work
