    Great info thank you! I'm interested to know if the opacity/transparency of a colour would affect the mix you get? So would a transparent red mixed with an opaque yellow give a similar result to an opaque red and a transparent yellow? Hopefully I'm making sense?

    So many things! And mostly that it's really helpful to hear the rationale not just see what you're painting. I wonder what kindnof paper you're using that can stand up to all the paint. I also wonder what I'm doing wrong with my canvas that when I try to add depth, sometimes it seems like I am just picking up what I had already painted. I would like to know if it's my paint or brushes or something else that is at issue? I often stop and wait for the surface to dry in between layers, just to avoid the problem.

    Ultramarine blue would be a better choice since you will run into problems with pthalo blue (green shade) notice the purples you got were dull and not a bright violet shade? Ulta ram rinse blue would give a vibrant violet and not look kind of muddy.

    FYI to viewers - unfortunately Golden no longer makes Hansa Yellow Medium or Hansa Yellow Light (just wanted to let you know if you were having trouble looking for them). I know that Laurel has recommended Liquitex Cadmium Free Yellow Medium and Cadmium Free Yellow Light as well (I know this from taking her painting course a while back) so those will probably be good substitutes for the ones she's using in this video. :)

    Thanks for pointing this out!! Since this video I started using benzimidazolone yellow medium and light from Golden! The liquitex options are awesome too!

    I cannot find a link to know what supplies I need to paint this. I know you showed Golden paint tube and you talked about magenta and you mentioned phaelo blue (sorry if I spelled that incorrectly) and purple. I see orange but I have several oranges, the same with yellow. Is your white titanium white. I also see this is three years old so I hope you get this. You are very easy to watch and I really want to try this.

    Love your lessons that you generously share!! I am 69 and I always had crap colours! Thank you so much as I am learning to do abstracts! To make a purple, I sure have trouble finding just a phthlo blue here in Canada, it’s either red or green shade! Would the red shade work as well for purple and as vibrant? What a difference in vibrancy when you show us how to mix these colours! Love your talent and art! Thank you for your time!

    A couple means two, not three. Just saying. Three would be a few. Liked your video though. After all these years, about 50, I've never really tried to mix my own purple. I have a little painting journal that I keep my color mixes in. I'll be making a page or two of purples I've mixed now. Thanks!

    LITERALLY JUST MIXED THAT TOP MIDDLE MUD GREY!!!! I've been banging my head against the wall, had a tantrum after mixing a more pink mud grey and ended up throwing my mixing spatula against the far wall in my studio, threw my hands into the air and walked away. I feel like I've been lied to my entire life!! I even went through interior design schooling and in my color theory I swear THEY DID NOT TEACH THIS!!!! I cannot thank you enough, you have saved me so much money now! Between wasting tons of paint trying to get vibrant purple and repainting walls!! One last thing.... do you know by chance how to get uber NEON colors???? Thank you once again!!!

  • @laurelgreenfieldart
    @laurelgreenfieldart11 ай бұрын

    I’m so glad the video helped! Neons are tough because neon paint has different pigment in it to make it that vibrant. I recommend buying a neon pink or magenta and then testing adding small amounts of different blues to it to get the neon purple you want!

    I found it a good video. It makes a difference as well whether you mix Flat (mate) or Glos (shiny) color types. It will change the outcome completely even when using the same color set.

    I was taught to make a colour chart, so I know what to expect when I mix yellow and blue. Every combination of a different yellow and a different blue will give you a different green. It all depends upon which green you are seeking and how you plan on using that particular colour.

    I have no problem with watercolor. but in acrylic i cannot mix a purple, keeps ending up brown or greyish even with white. i have scarlet, crimson, ultramarine blue, and pthalo blue (doesnt say shade), & cobalt. none seem to work. i also don't really have a flat palette to mix on lol. suggestions what colors to use from those?

  • @laurelgreenfieldart
    @laurelgreenfieldart2 жыл бұрын

    You can mix on anything! Use a paper plate or a piece of cardboard. Your blues are great. Your reds are probably too dark and/or too warm. Get a magenta if you can and don’t add white, it will desaturate the color!
