    If you were retrofitting the SE/LE door cards onto standard Miata doors, the woofer connection is the same. If you wanted to run those tweeters for some reason, just connect them in parallel to the wires feeding the woofers.

    @@Bananywkoszyku As you are doing a retrofit into a Miata that didn't have that special audio setup, there won't be any factory door harness leads running up to that tweeter. So you'll have to make up that wire harness.

    Do you have an explainer on the 4th generation ND Miata Bose system? I have a 2017 and the audio quality from the speakers is so poor. A lot of the midrange detail is completely lost and the bass has no detail either. I'm spoiled by my single SONOS Five speaker at home which sounds way better than the entire Bose system in the car. I tweaked the EQ in the car but it only does so much. I heard that you can't simply put new door speakers in as it won't make much difference.

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium23 күн бұрын

    Hello Dave. We don't have a video done yet for the ND, but our M800 door speakers with our AD2 installation kit are a drop-in replacement for either the Bose or stock speakers in the ND. When installed, we recommend disconnecting the tweeter in the door columns as the M800s are already a 2-way design with a far superior tweeter. If you have one of the models with headrest speakers, we don't have a replacement for those (you have to pretty much remove all the seat upholstery to get at them and the average owner won't be comfortable doing that), so we suggest balancing the system so that our M800s handle 95% of the music and the HR speakers are *just* audible to help with wind/road noise. There's more info on our regular website at 3maudio.com

    So I am a little confused we have a 2009 with Bose system and the drivers door speaker is blown so what speakers should I replace them with?

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium24 күн бұрын

    Our M800's are a perfect physical fit in the 2009-2015 Miata doors with stock Bose speakers, but operation of *any* standard speaker will not be correct with the stock Bose amp as Mazda/Bose built the speaker system crossovers into the amp itself so that the door woofer and tweeter are fed frequency-limited signals. This means your only real option for replacing a failed Bose speaker is another Bose speaker. I believe they are still available new through Mazda, but the price is comically expensive - close to $400, I think. The cost, and underwhelming performance is why so many owners have pulled out all the Bose stuff and installed a modern head unit and speakers. If you just want to get your current Bose system going at the least cost, look for a used woofer on eBay. As long as the seller guarantees it to work, it shouldn't be more than $40 to get a replacement.

    The crossovers for the 09-15 Bose systems are built into the amps and each speaker is fed frequency-limited signals., so unfortunately there's nothing to be done at the headunit to change what frequencies go to which speakers. So you can boost frequencies that are already fed to each speaker, but you can't alter the range at all. I believe the woofers in the doors roll off to the little fullrange around 600 Hz or so.

    It is likely something related to the impedance load the radio's amp is seeing. When the audio cuts out entirely it is usually the radio's amp going into protection mode. It will do this to avoid damage to the amp circuitry. Protection mode can be triggered by too low an impedance (which can happen with multiple 4-ohm speakers connected in parallel), a short (or near-short) to ground in one of the speaker leads, or some internal problem with the amp in the radio. Make sure your total speaker connection for each channel is no less than 3-4 ohms and also verify that with the speaker leads disconnected at the radio that there isn't less than a 3-4 ohm impedance measured from any speaker lead to the vehicle ground.

    @@naimisddiken9606 Low system voltage will definitely create a problem, so follow up on the battery and also verify that the alternator is producing as it should be. In the meantime, try disconnecting the OEM door tweeters if you still have them connected. They aren't very good quality anyway and the M800s are already a 2-way design with superior tweeters. Dropping those out of the circuit will raise the door impendence and that should then help with the load presented to the amp.

  • @3rdMillennium

    @@naimisddiken9606 There are a couple fuses to check associated with the radio. In the passenger compartment next to driver's left leg, check #1 and #10. And regarding testing, impedance will not vary with volume. Using your meter, check each speaker wire (removed from speaker) to the vehicle ground. You should *not* show a low impedance short to ground on any lead.

It already has an aftermarket JVC head unit/amplifier, and the last owner also had new 8" door speakers installed, but the system overall sounds like crap, mainly because of how bright/peaky it sounds at moderate to high volume. Your mentioning of the factory tweeter being peaky/bright is exactly what I experience which is great to know. Now i just need to remove my door panels and see if the 8" speakers are one way or two-way and just disconnect the factor tweeter and potential replace the 8" speakers with a two-way, if the current ones are one way...will order yours if that's the case. @@3rdMillennium Thanks...just ordered my M800's. I'm in MA. Nice that you guys are local. Also...do you have any recommendation for a 3.5" speaker that would fit the center dash that is better than just disconnecting the factory(which are so harsh)...which I've done. The car was already retrofitted with a JVC KW-V230BT head unit, but I don't think the installer had any idea how bad the factory tweeters are and they just installed 8" woofers in the doors with the factory tweeters. M800's will solve that. Can't wait.

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium2 ай бұрын

    @@rocko107me8 We tell people to just leave the center dash alone or just disconnect it. It is really only useful for handsfree phone calls or a pure mono signal, so for music you want to focus on the L/R door speakers. And I know what you mean about harsh sound of those tweeters. The stock sound system in the NC uses a real soft dome tweeter (which isn't great but it's not terrible), but the 5x7 driver that's doing 80% of the audio is a nasty full-range driver with a huge midrange peak. And then the NC Bose systems cross over from their woofer at around 400 Hz, so 95% of the audio is coming from the little 2.5" paper fullrange in the doors -- super peaky and not very nice to listen to.

    I have a 2009 with Bose. Do you know what frequency range the 8cm door speakers are being fed? I'd like to upgrade them for some cleaner mid-range but if they're just used as tweeters (like the ones between the seats) It's probably not worth it.

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium4 ай бұрын

    You won't get any midrange if you upgrade the bass drivers. I don't recall the exact crossover frequency but it's well under 1,000 Hz - I seem to recall it around 700Hz? If you look at those OEM Bose bass drivers you'll see why. They are a heavy, paper cone and would be terrible at reproducing midrange frequencies. So the small door fullrange speakers are reproducing 90% of all the sound. It's just a poor design - this is why so many owners elect to just rip out all the Bose equipment and start over with a nice headunit, amp, and some good door speakers.

    If you kept the stock tweeter plugged in, you'd have too much high-end in the system and it would be overly bright. It would also degrade the stereo imaging in the system. The tweeter built into the M800 is a superior performer with a nice smooth, extended response. So, I'm trying to understand which component needs replacing the most? Is the head unit adequate? I'm thinking the speakers probably need it. But, then if I replace the speakers, the impedance change will almost certainly require a different amp. I think I'd be content just upgrading the door speakers. I've seen some good upgrade videos (five star car stereo). Any idea which component sucks the worst? @@3rdMillennium

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium8 ай бұрын

    The weakest parts of the system are definitely the speakers. The HU and amps are nothing special but once you pull the speakers, you'll see how cheap they are and why they sound the way they do. So I'd suggest dealing with the door speakers first, listening for a few weeks, and then deciding if you want to go further. And impedance isn't really the problem in the system. Using a normal 4-ohm speaker the max power output of the amp will be less, but there's still quite a bit there. Our M800s will drop into place without issue in the NCs. I know this is an old one but maybe some can answer this….if Mazda Has those speakers crossed over how do they accomplish this in the non-Bose system? Is it via a capacitor? Can that be removed? (Cut it out and splice new wire in) If not… heck you’ve already got the car basically taken apart so why not run new speaker wire from the head unit or amp? (assuming you went aftermarket on one or both)

  • @3rdMillennium
    @3rdMillennium10 ай бұрын

    Yes, there's a crossover cap on those rear speakers. And while they could produce lower frequencies below the crossover point (probably good to around 600Hz), there is no baffling for these speakers to separate the L&R drivers, so you'll start getting weird cross channel cancellation and nodal effects. Mazda (and many auto mfgs) does this all the time. It makes the installation much easier and less complex (costs them less), but it still allows them to upsell the audio system as a 6, 8, 10+ speaker system - even if it sounds lousy. The ideal solution is to baffle the speakers - completely isolating the left from the right by building them into some sort of enclosure.

    In my case, my NC1 did not come with rear speaker assembly, and when I replaced the OEM non-Bose, I found the rear speakers assembly on EBAY. I soldered new wiring to each speaker, deleting the OEM connectors, and ran the wiring underneath the center console to the replacement head unit. They don't do much but as mentioned, they add a little high freq response that is lost to the wind. These cars are just not designed for high fidelity sound.

    Mazda's that came with windblocker audio (2004 and 2005) have a plug that comes up from the carpet just below the middle of the windblocker and you would connect/disconnect to the windblocker there. If you are retrofitting one of these '04 or '05 windblockers into a 2nd gen Miata that *didn't* come wired for windblocker sound, then you will need to run leads from your radio's rear speaker channels (left and right) back to the windblocker. We suggest it's easiest to do this up under the center console and carpet and then up to the center of the windblocker. Then you'll want to install a 4-pin plug so that you can remove the windblocker in the future, as needed. We actually have another related video that talks about this a bit and shows how to install a 4-pin connector to make the connection to your radio. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGuJvNKKY6TJcaw.htmlsi=-bc_c2zD-BG9ZUv8

    If the radio is '4x50', that means you have 4 channels in the amp - two for the front and two for the rear. You'll want to connect the doors to the front and the windblocker to the rear. Then use your fader to balance the system so the doors are primary and you can *just* hear the rears.

    Why would you cut the factory wiring as opposed to making a plug the just jumps the wiring? That would be SO much easier. Plus, if this is done with a factory wind blocker, it can be returned to factory if the car is ever sold.

    If the Miata had the factory sound windblocker setup, then there's no need to put on a plug at all - just screw in the M200s and you're done. But this video was about a retrofit - putting the windblocker with speakers into a Miata that never had one - so you need some sort of connector to get to the radio harness. And as to making some sort of jumper as opposed to cutting off the old connector, I suppose you could use some wire taps from the speaker leads to a short pigtail and then put on a plug (making sure to unplug from the old amp, if present), but it seems easier to me to just put on a new 4-pin plug at the old plug location. But either way would work - do what seems easiest to you and will give you a good, clean connection.

    any plans to make a video showing installing the airhorn kit into Miatas 2016-2023?

    While the printed instructions (with pictures) included with the horn kit include the 4th gen Miata, we will make a video when we get a customer loaner car for a day or two when we're recording.

    KILLER-DILLER! Thanks for sharing this! I've got 2 horns I want to ADD to the one there. I think a 20 amp fuse should be OK.

    To run this Marco horn with some additional horns, I think you'll find that you will need to install a separate relay and fuse. The current Miata relay is 20 amps and the Marco horn by itself is probably drawing around 15? If you order from us include a note and we'll be glad to send you a relay and socket for that extra wiring.

    I am pretty sure you are mistaken on polarity on nb, my nb has green as negative and green/yellow as positive. Stock speakers have polarity on them and that is visible clearly

    Just checked the shop manual and I think you are correct and that's a typo. Thanks for letting us know - we'll get it corrected in the video.

    Worth mentioning some first gen have tweeters as well. My 1995 has them. Thanks for the info as I’m sure this applies the same.

    Yes, the Limited/Special/M-Edition 1st gen Miata's had an upgraded Pioneer speaker system with a tweeter mounted up high in the door cards. We go over that specific setup in another of our videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKmI0bCPqNGeYpc.html
