The second gen has a stereo that's really hard to replace without making some real sacrifices. Any suggestions?

Did you ever do a video on how to replace those little rear speakers? I cant get the back panel behind the seats off because i dont know how to remove the handle that releases the top. Any help on that one would be awesome =)

No, we have not got into those speakers for a couple reasons. First, as you pointed out getting access to them is quite a job and likely more than our typically DIY customers are willing to try. Second, those speakers are mounted in a side-by-side steel frame without any baffling. Mazda gets away with this as they cross them over quite high - really running them as tweeters. Sonically, this doesn't sound too good so a proper solution is to mount an enclose at that location to provide proper baffling. We've developed a nice solution to do this but the economics of the final product don't work, so we haven't pursued it. But we haven't completely given up on the idea, so we may have more material on this in the future.

@@3rdMillennium The reason for my question is, im trying to fit some 16 inch woofers in those 2 storage compartments that are behind the seats. I just can't get the back panel off. Plus i think theres enough room to fit an amplifier. a boom box in the trunk just sounds aweful so im trying to get some bass into the cabin =) Thanks a lot for your reply!

@@schallmau3r I recall the handle just pulls off. But watch the first 5 minutes of this video of a shop installing a replacement soft top. You have to take the entire rear interior out for that job so you should see exactly how to get that back panel off. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnyrpM1uoKuzY8Y.html
