Nice job! I actually preferred the Seymour Duncan, which is interesting, I think they’re pretty great pick ups in general, though. Great video!!!
Muy buen video, gracias. De los amplificadores friedman de 20W, según tu opinión, con cual te quedas? Runt, Pink Taco o JJ Junior (por alguna razón el runt es el más barato)
Brilliant video! Well done on finding a sound that gets you in the EVH zone!
Thanks man!…EVh Zone!…I like that!
You talk too much
I know right!!??
amazing channel...great review
Now get an Alnico 2 magnet to swap out the JB's Alnico 5. Eddie did use the JB, but like with his custom (originally a ceramic pick, hence custom custom) he had Seymour build his JB using an A2 magnet (at that time it was an Allan Holdsworth prototype pickup, the same model Warren DeMartini and Jake E Lee used on their guitars at that time). Both the duncan custom shop and EVH brand now sell three Ed pickup flavors, a PAF type with A2, a Custom type with A2 and a JB type with A2. I have done this to my JB and it does acquire some of the CC character, less compressed, a bit more ballsy and slightly smoother but brighter resonant peak. Works amazing for strats. Saludos desde Brasil, hermano.
Nice!…Saludos!…
Is this the stock Wolfgang pickup that came with the guitar. If so it's not the same as the USA Wolfgang pickup. Sounds totally different that the USA pickup. I have to agree that the Duncan sounds better not as loose on the low end. Again if this is the stock pickup in the special it doesn't represent the pickup Van Halen actually used as the USA pickup sounds different.
On the Jap Specials pickups were the USA ones…at least a 2008-2009 iteration of them…that pickup was that…
Good to know. I didn’t hear you mention that this was a Japanese made special with USA pickups. That’s being the case I thought the Wolfgang pickups were a bit muddy or loose in the low end. Kind of like a Dimarzio tone zone. I was hoping these were the Asia made ones. I was about to buy a USA made Wolfgang pickup from Sweetwater. I might rethink that now.
The EVH pickup is clearly designed to only work with the full EVH setup. It's also clearly tuned to work properly with the 100 watt vintage style Marshall and nothing else. Stop your lunacy. Control yourself. There IS consumer law. All companies must abide by the laws. You can't compare EVH pickups that are only going to work in the EVH brand and nowhere else. Of course you like and prefer cause you're not using the EVH thing in an EVH setup. The custom custom IS designed to work in both of your old technology amplifiers. But, we know, the CC is NOT THE SAME AS the original. It's a low fidelity version which has reduced noise when compared with Eddie's original. The million dollar guitar pickup is safe. So don't worry that you have exactly the same pickup as Eddie cause you DON'T. EITHER you FINISH BUYING the EVH setup or you get out of all things EVH. EVH will only work with the 100 Watt vintage Marshall and nothing else. That means the custom custom pickup can't possibly work with anything EVH. Eddie only gave permission for the vintage Marshall and nothing else. The old flangers don't work with EVH. The old phasers don't work with EVH either. So, don't fool yourself. They're not your friends. If you want the old sound, you've only got 1 choice, and that's to buy Eddie's exact equipment. All other products are slightly wrong. You have the choice of EVH or nothing. Grow up kids. Consumer law exists and you're not getting around it with your experiments.
OK I thought you were kidding about all this, but I think you might not be… Holy fuck 😂 this is so funny
How old are you by the way? I’m Just curious. I’m not trying to be rude.
My friend I can do whatever I want…compare whatever I want…if I don’t do that I can’t find out what I like best…I don’t care the comercial side of things just care what I like
Fun fact, Eddie had an SH-11 Custom Custom he stuck in the neck of the early prototypes of the Music Man guitar. He told the DiMarzio guys he wanted that sound but a tad brighter. It took about 30 prototypes to unseat the Custom Custom as Eddie's preferred neck tone. So even though it's an awesome EVH bridge pickup, that's kinda what he likes in the neck too! The DiMarzio Air Norton is the closest model they sell which was the runner up to what EVH eventually approved.
Well Eddie mimed his TV performances for many years so he's not actually a great musician. He had thousands of opportunities to sit down with normal people and discuss his sonic life but he deliberately chose to not do that. He also chose to not keep a diary etc... etc... So, shut your lunacy mouth.
@@Gma7788You seem to have some sort of bias towards Eddie. 🤔
To get that authentic brown sound, I put some Ex-Lax in my Marshall, I actually put it between the head and the cabinet, it works best there, then, just let the music flow !
One guitar can do it all from fender to les Paul love it that my dream guitar,oh please take that red star out that look 😂😂leave the 5150
I actually refinish the body with a Purple sparkle color!…and natural headstock
Don't believe male gossip.
EVH Wolfgang special one of kind there with bird eye don’t see that often by the way nice sound both humbucker and single coil I wish I have one
Thanks man!…those were the MIJ specials…real bang for the buck!
Im ver happy with my BE50 DLX.. I imagine the difference is very insignificant I only wish all the dip switches were on the front panel
I know what you are saying about the switches…right now I own a Small Box 50 and they sound similiar…spectacular!…so the BE50 should be the same situation
I liked them both. Your tone is so good it's so sparkly and clear. I want that. I have a Wolfang standard, is there really that much of a difference between it and a Special? Or is it more in the amp and other things. I have a new Iconic 5150 amp 60w 2x12. That Friedman amp sounds good what model is it?
Thanks man!… I think the standards and special use the same pickups ( import Wolfgang’s )…so they sound very similar…about the tone the key is not to use to much gain…
@@GonzaCordo That Friedman amp sounds incredible. I see they've also come out with a Vintage Plexi now too. Is there any difference between the BE 100w deluxe and the BE 50 watt deluxe besides the obvious 50 watts? I don't really need a 100 watt amp for my house. Also what cabinet do you think would sound the best? Are Friedman cabs as good of quality as their amps?
They are on the same neighborhood…clean channel are different though…but that crunch es BE sound all the way
The big difference is that only the USA Wolfgang has USA-made pickups. Surely the overseas pickups are similar spec but there is a "magic sauce" the custom shop does that isn't done on the imports. The Peavey Wolfgang's bridge pickup had a wild bobbin wind that included changing the wire gage MID-wind! Allegedly, the Fender version is "an exact copy" because Eddie didn't want to change the sound. Only the neck pickup was changed for the Fender Wolfgang.
They sound a little different, but both sound very good.
That’s the thing…it depends on what you want…no bad road!
Hello!! Excellent job and playing! Between the JB - CC and 59/hybrid which one did you kept? I had CC and now JB in a copy strat but i believe that JB is more compressed and CC has better note separation. Especially at the high frets where CC is singing....
Hi man!…thanks!…I like both…and it is always so guitar dependent!…sometimes I hate the JB but in some guitars shines!…the CC works on everything I guess … I think alder body guitar loves JB…
Scallop board?
Sure!…I love it!
Just getting into the variac, never thought I'd be going down the rabbit hole.
The Brown Hole!
Freaking awesome review 🔥. Just one question on how does it take dirt drives and fuzzes like tone bender and fuzz faces type circuits?
Drives and OD like a Champ!…I never tested fuzzes…
love the tone control of the vol and tone knobs
It’s a must for me!
May be a bit off topic: I have seen you use the g string Gate. I am play who use the volume knob on the guitar a lot. Is it dynamic enough to play that way or does it cut off the signal when turning to 3 or 4 ??? Thanks from germany
I use it at the middle and it doesn’t affect using your volume even if your are getting clean tones
Amazing! What pickup do you have in the white Strat?
Have you tried the UA Lion yet? Really interested in that as a potential tradeoff for the 100 watt Plexi.
I haven’t but it looks quite the thing!
So nice to hear more than one or two styles of playing and scales in these demos..
Creo que no es el cordobés
Excellent video....great playing and great tones. My BE-100 DLX arrives Monday, I can't wait.
You are in for a treat!!!…
The Wolfgang pickup sounds the best. Eddie designed it to have less punch than a alcino 5 but same volume and a little more high end clarity. At any volume the wolfgang pickup brings out the tone of the wood from the body and neck so it can sing. The Seymour duncan has a more muddy sound but more output. I think the EVH pickup is really good with extreme high gain because it's not over modulated gain.
EVH is a whole setup, not just a pickup. If you buy into a system, then finish buying all the components before you speak about it.
Eddie used Reverb heavily for sure!
Yes!!!…part of the tone!
JB win! )
I think so too!
Que chevere....te felicito....un abrazo respetuoso desde Puerto Rico.
Saludos Ángel!!
@@GonzaCordo ......un abrazo respetuoso desde Puerto Rico.
oui
Sounds great, the closest sound to the brown sound of any Friedman amp. In my view most Friedman amps sound way too boomy and modern to be considered a representation of plexi and the brown sound but this is the sound in Eddie Van Halen's head.
I own a BE100dlx now and I think it’s even closer…
They sound nearly identical on the dirt sound. The SD TB11 seems to clean up better. This is the only thing I don't really love about my EVH guitars...the pickups don't clean up well. They achieve a passable clean sound but just barely.
I didn’t like that cocked wah thing…now that guitar has a Pariah Pasadena…killer!
I like the SD more. Nice demo.
I do too!
TB 1 IS KILLER!
Yeah!
No to reverb
The JB is an amazing all around pup. Has a particular Mid-bite that’s just glorious! That being said, in the realm of high gain modern metal tonz the CC performs better than the JB in that regard. I picture the JB as the pinnacle pup for Crunch! Not the best for modern high gain metal tonz
what a great review...everyhing was perfect..nice guy, great playing (clean, breakup, crunch) ,great sound (amp) and recording...and you absolutely nailed it at the end....this will be the new bridge pickup for my Wolfgang!
Awesome man!
Man, awesome playing and sick tones. I have a question for you. I tend to like the “modded Marshall” tone, ranging from that slash type tone to brown sound, all the way down to blues breaker sound. The Friedman line all seem like a good fit for me tonally. My issues has to do with volume and what will work in a home setting where the volume is pretty low. I have a kemper and have profiles of all the classic Marshall amps and the kemper does a very good job ans getting close to this sound and it does sound really good at low volume but I find myself wanting a tube amp too but not sure I’ll be able to make it sound good at lower bedroom volumes. I suppose you would have to get some time of attenuation device ? Is it possible to get these types of medium gain overdriven Marshall (Friedman) tones at bedroom volumes or should I just stick to me kemper ha?
Thanks man!….i’d say yes you can!…you need eq differently but definitely you can…go to a Guitar center and try one at low volume…they sound awesome!…
@@GonzaCordo that’s a good idea. Unfortunately the nearest guitar center is 1.5 hours from me. But maybe I’ll make a road trip! 🎸🔥
1) the sweet sounding Spanish guitar playing at the start (30 seconds) was that with the stock pickup or the Duncan?? 2) is the guitar the made in USA Wolfgang?
Thanks man….I couldn’t say!…don’t remember if I recorded that before or after I swapped the PU…and yes the EVH were Usa made
Yes it was a really nicely played piece! To my ear it sounded like the evh pickups because I'm hearing the mid bump and the fatter low end it seems to have overall (more to me like 150-200hz area)@@GonzaCordo
@@GonzaCordo did they used to make the wolfgang specials in the usa then because they are made in mexico now?
@matt926uk1 no…first batch of specials were made in Japan with USA hardware and pickups…then China and then Mexico with Asian hardware and PU…
The Duncan sounds a bit more “period accurate” and more 80s but the evh sounds way better and has more vibe and fits the guitar better
I liked the EVH but after a while I got tired of that cocked wah thing…
Great review, palying and amazing sounds (also really enjoyed the whammy bar tricks). Just a question does it have noticeable noise (hiss or similar) on channel 2 while increasing gain knob ? Also ,how do you rate it as a recording tool? Many thanks (subscribed you channel)
It is not noisy at all!…even with the gain maxed out…it’s great for recording…
Everybody flips over Van Halen. i was there when they came out. There were other bands too. Plus you had to stomach Roth.
cry cry cry
Moronic, dickish comment. Makes one wonder why you’re here….
Do you play guitar?
Did you have to modify the TB11 to fit inside the Wolfgang? I have an EVH 5150 series guitar and would like to try a L500XL in it but I'm not sure how to make it fit since the stock Wolfgang pickup is direct mounted.
I did modified the base plate of the new pickup…just a round file
Apparently, the pickup he used in the white and black guitar in the first record was a "Custom" which had a ceramic magnet in it. It sounded closer to his "main" guitar which was the Ibanez Destroyer. But after he destroyed the Destroyer (haha) and killed the tone, he started looking for new tones and eventually, stuck a PAF magnet in the Custom. Seymour Duncan, supposedly, had to rewind it because Eddie would routinely kill pickups (somehow) and the pickup that ended up in the Frankenstein was that rewound "Custom Custom". Turns out the gauss of the magnet Eddie used was similar to an Alnico 2 which is what the reproduction pickup is. During the Hagar era, he used a Duncan JB in his 5150 guitar and it somehow shorted out internally and the reading on it was 60k or something! But Eddie put a Custom Custom in the NECK position of the prototype Ernie Ball guitars and he like it there. The DiMarzio pickup in the Music Man was around 17k in the bridge and used AlNiCo 5 magnet (the 2nd place finisher in that pickup contest ended up being the Tone Zone). He stuck with the 14k/AlNiCo 2 thing when Peavey designed his guitar and the formula just stuck. Basically the Custom Custom is the pickup in the Frankenstein (minus aging) and what ended up using is just a slight variation of that concept. Pickup wind patterns do matter but the main specs matter the most. BTW, the "Custom" wind is basically the same number of turns of wire as the 59 wind with thicker 42 gage wire. So the concept was higher output at a similar inductance. That's why the Seymour Duncan 78 (9.1k w/ 42ga) and the Custom Custom/Frankenstein (14.1k w/ 43ga) has such a similar tone and the output isn't as different as would imagine.
Wait...I thought Eddie use Duncan JB/SH4 on the VH1 album with DLR..? And then he used the Duncan TB11 starting from the third album?
Sounds close but not really
Wow! Killer guitar, and Brother.... you rock hard! Amazing tone and playing. Just beautiful! I'm like you (I saw your comment below).... I love anything VH and EVH. Obsessed. Always have been. Always will be. Cool vid! Rock on, and all the best in 2024! Subbed.
Thanks man!!!…we are all at the EVH army!
1:38 Custom Custom 4:11 JB JB volume level seemed a little reduced during the Unchained riff. So it's hard to compare with this change comparing 2:01 and 4:40 . I did notice you balanced the levels at 7:11. Much better. This is a very close comparison with the CC being just a little more clear on the highs. I prefer the Custom Custom only because I'm building an EVH guitar. The CC is the winner for EVH tone. His tone is a little brighter. The JB is a true shredder. If you want mean metal tone and chunk JB is the winner. Just not as articulate as the CC. JB is more compressed and a little better low end. I have two guitars with JB and love them. Just not the best for EVH tone.
Is it possible with Marshall plexi 1987x?
Yeah!!!…same circuit…only difference is the wattage!…
