It seemed like it was always standard procedure to mix the bass deep into the background on R.S. music.

Bill always downplayed his bass skills, but I think he was a great bassist.

Are we sure this is Bill and not Keith? Keith played a lot of the bass on these albums.

The Beatles original version is still my favorite. Because I heard it as a teenager when it was released. But George Benson version is brilliant. Also, Billy Ocean version is great too. Brother Ray has a great style of his own and adds his own unique style of magic to any song.

I never thought of this song to be such a bassy song. Geez. Turn it up a bit so it stands out! We’re missing out on this line. And here I thought Keith had all the creative bass lines.

Roots, 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, walks - everything that is required of a great bass player - no more, no less. If understated rather than in your face is the criteria, then Bill is the best there is. Bill is too cool for the hype, he doesn't have anything to prove.

Unfortunetaly, you can't hear clearly all off that fine bass lines, because of the quiet not good quality of recording of stones records in that time, anyway, and there was no comparison between beatles and stones recordings quality. Quality of recordings was not the most important issue of stones records. Please listen ".. standing in the shadow". Great song, terrble quality. Even Beggars Banquet sound couldnt reproduções the high quality of music. 😢 That's why it was dificult to hear well all tha quality of Bill and Brian, ar least

Charlie Watts is very tight and really does drive the song forward. Bill Wyman is loose. I know that this is a minority point of view. The more notable Stones bass lines are played by Keith Richards. On Gimme Shelter, Watts is keeping it more simple with drum strikes in a 1-2-3-4- when coming up from A, B, C Sharp; but Wyman doubles to two notes and thus does not work with Watts. Charlies drum pattern is what drives Gimme Shelter. The other Stones like him but I hear a bass player who is not working together with Watts whose part is the back bone of the song.

Bill Wyman was my inspiration to pick up the Bass 50 years ago. He is one of the most grossly underrated bassist of all time. Him and Watts were the backbone of the Stones. No disrespect to Daryl Jones who is a phenomenal bassist but Bill was meant for the Stones.

Quite the sprightly bit of bass work there. Must have listened to that tune a million times and never realized what was lurking beneath all the sound and fury. “Let It Bleed” is the Stones magnum opus, IMO. Everything about it, from the cover art to the songwriting, performance and production is stellar.
