Would love to see Stamko’s in Montreal, But I would rather the Habs sign an FA like DeBrusk and make a trade for a player like Necas or Kakko players like that we should be targeting for now… at some point we will have to sign some veteran players with experience like Stamkos or others or this team will end up like Ottawa… I think this summer the Habs will go after a player like David Perron and then Sign Jake DeBrusk and those will be the Habs “big” FA signings just my prediction and DeBrusk, Perron are really good fits…

Hey Tony, matheson should be a forward. He has more talent there. He he is not tough enough to be a defenseman with the habs. Montreal needs some big tough defenseman that can stop opposing forwards from scoring. His minus 26 does not cut it for me. Montreal needs to add a couple of high end scorers that are top 6 that can score 30 plus goals and if that could be had through a trade using matheson I would do it immediately. Something not mentioned and rarely ever mentioned is that defense is a TEAM game not just the defenseman's game. The forwards are usupposed to also be RESPONSIBLE and cover up a defenseman when he makes a rush. The problem is that forwards are selfish they do not care abotu defense they see a defenseman liek Matheson making a rush they just ASSUME he makes it safe and do not EVER back him up. Players in this era of hockey are not and do not care about defensive hockey as they all know they get paid by scoring numbers NOT by two way hockey.If a forward doesn't score loads of points his ability gets questioned. As to matheson's +/-I already stated the WHY long ago he is playing a ton of minutes with ALL of the habs MINUS players and we have a TEAM full of minus players. People seem to NOT pay attention to detail and hockey numbers liek they THINK they do and seem to pick their spots.Everyone has been raving about Hutson yet he was one of only 2 players on his team that were a MINUS ...MOST of the season.There is a big difference logging minutes on a minus team and a team full of plus players so apparently it was ok for Hutson who got praised but not ok for Matheson.Yes I know by end of season that last month push Hutson managed to get back to the plus side but he was a minus 3/4 of the year.

The reason I would like to see matheson traded is because he is THAT good but his stock has never been higher than right now. If a team would give up a top elite young forward I would do the deal because we are getting deeper on D every single year going forward now. Another elite forward gets us closer to the playoffs.

I’d keep Matheson. Let the young Dmen develop alongside him. In 1-2 years you have more options to add another quality forward through trade, having serviable Dmen with value. Nashville was in this situation back in the days with Weber, Josi, Suter, Ekholm, Ellis. Then it’s a matter of making sure you keep the right ones. They’ll probably sign a UFA forward and/or trade this year. + 1 or 2 1st round forwards in the draft. Then potentially the same next season. Let’s not be in a hurry to trade Matheson. There’s more value in keeping him right now for atleast 1 more year at the minimum. Unless ofcourse the offer is too good to say no.

@@JoeBoozer I understand that concept. With some players it’s obvious they’ve attained their peak and have showed signs of slowing down or are injury prone. That is not the case with Matheson. He’s in the best shape on the entire team. You don’t know for sure he’ll decline. There is a risk ofcourse. You evaluate if the pros outweigh the cons in relation to that risk and make a decision. They should keep him for another year atleast. It’s just my opinion. I’d reduce his minutes a bit. That’ll happen with Lane playing the PP. And when other players come up he won’t be playing the 1st PK wave or at all.

You will obviously turn over the puck sometimes. But he has 62 points. His defensive play can be better for sure, and one thing that’ll help tremendously is playing less minutes. Right now he’s doing everything. 1st pair, 1st PP and PK wave. You don’t just trade him and play Hutson, Reinbachet or Mailloux. Let them ease into the lineup smoothly. Then if you want to trade Matheson at the next deadline or in summer you do it. Be smart

"Trading him now" is such an open-ended statement. It depends entirely on who we could get. Don't fall in love with your own players. That being said, I doubt we can get land a legit 1st line forward with Matheson, and that's the only thing that would be as valuable to us that a 60pt defenseman. If landing a guy like Necas is possible (although I don't buy he's available ), you'd be a fool not to trade for a 25yo 6'2" skilled player. If Matheson + is the price for such a player, you do it.

If landing a guy like Necas is possible (although I don't buy he's available ), you'd be a fool not to trade for a 25yo 6'2" skilled player. If Matheson + is the price for such a player, you do it.

Trading Matheson would be a mistake. He is good for the young guys on and off the ice. He stabilizes the young defense.
Matheson ain't stabilizing anything. He's great offensively, but a nightmare defensively. How many times did he lose the puck at the blue line on the PP this year? Savard stabilizes the dmen.

Guhle is good, but isn't close to bringing the same offense Matheson does, and is always getting injured cause he didn't protect himself.
