    That lens is fairly big and heavy for this gimbal. So to ensure success, you have to make sure that you have it balanced as well as possible. If you're not familiar with how to properly balance a gimbal, look up some videos on it. The camera has to be balanced on it's plate front-to-back and side-to-side first. Then move on to each of the 3 axis. Don't forget the one right above the handle. A lot of people skip this one, but it's important if you're not holding the gimbal straight up and down.

    wow can i do this with ninja v as well?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, just like the Shogun, using the Ninja V with any of the current Sony mirrorless cameras will give you 8-bit 4:2:2 color in Prores, versus the internal 8-bit 4:2:0 in a higher compressed mpeg4 format. The color difference is minimal, but when shooting SLOG2, grading is required and any extra color info you can save helps a lot. The much less compressed Prores file should be much easier on the CPU when editing as well. Having the bigger, brighter monitor makes it easier to frame your shots and do manual focus. All the scopes and shooting assistants make things easier as well. Downside is that you will lose the face tracking in AF though.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions5 жыл бұрын

    @@rightz06 - if you turn off the LCD screen of the a6500 and only record externally, the a6500 battery should last longer. The external recorder has it's own batteries. Both the Ninja and Shogun models will create a 10-bit Prores file. But the information in that 10-bit file will only be 8-bit 4:2:2. The external recorder cannot create any new data that the a6500 has not outputted. Basically, the quality of the recording is limited by the camera output. The 10-bit Prores file is just a "wrapper" wrapped around the 8-bit data. While there's no extra image data, the 10-bit file will be easier on the CPU when editing.

I was primarily using the a6500 as a B cam matched PP to my FS700. The FS700 has to use the factory PP7 when used with the external Atomos recorders. I can't remember if I shot 30fps, I think it was 24fps. I usually only shoot 30fps when shooting for broadcast and this was just me getting used to new gear.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions5 жыл бұрын

    @@JeffWelcherMedia - I don't see any effect on visual quality or grade-ability. In general 24fps does tend to give you a "film-like" motion blur when there's movement. So, when I'm doing stuff that isn't for broadcast, I'll often shoot 24fps with a 180 degree shutter and shallow depth of field to maximize the cinematic look. In my experience though, it's not the hard and fast rule that some people make it out to be. I've done stuff in 30fps that looks plenty cinematic. Some of my friends in broadcast think 24fps is so superior, they will film and edit in 24fps , but export the final program in 30fps. Always confused me when they'd be covering sports and content with fast motion, but they'd refuse to go up to 30fps because they felt it looked to much like "video". So, instead, they'd have a bunch of blurry content. Of course, now most of them demand everything be shot in 60p. If the camera is good, 60p is great though. You can play it full speed or slow it down to 50% speed in a 30fps project or to 40% in a 24fps project.

    I'm not sure if I would have bought the Shogun for the a6500. I already had my Shogun for use with my Sony FS700 (which is a necessity to get 4k from it). Mostly I use the Shogun so I can actually see what I'm shooting. The color space difference when recording the a6500 to the Shogun vs internal is just 8-bit 4:2:0 to 8-bit 4:2:2. It is a minimal difference. But when chroma-keying, the more color info, the better. Do some tests with the internal recording and see what you get. If you get the lighting perfect, you should be able to successfully chroma-key with 4:2:0. But, in my experience, it won't be easy to get high-quality results.

    I thought FS700 was not capable of capturing HDR vid. how did you do that?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions6 жыл бұрын

    It doesn't record it as a native HDR (REC.2020) file , but pretty much any video from any camera can be graded as HDR. And cameras that capture a higher dynamic range (HDR) using some version of either RAW or LOG (much better than regular REC.709) will better take advantage of what HDR can display. I won't get too technical because it would take volumes to tackle all of the important aspects of HDR. Basically the dynamic range of SLOG-2 must normally be compressed down to make it REC.709 (normal non-HDR video). REC.2020 allows for much more of that dynamic range to be preserved leading to more detail in shadows and highlights. FYI, my specific workflow is really only good for experimenting with HDR. It's too imprecise and time consuming to use for paid work. I don't have $18k for an HDR reference monitor or the paid "studio" version of Resolve, so I'm sort of grading blind just using scopes. The only way I can see my HDR footage is to upload it to KZread and then watch it using my Samsung HDR TV.

    The a6500 only does 4k in 24p, 25p, and 30p regardless of which recorder you use. It's a limitation of the camera output, not the recorder. www.atomos.com/cameras/sony-a6500 Surprisingly to most, the a7S (or R) II's are subject to the same limitation. Unfortunately, if you want more, you need a different camera.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions6 жыл бұрын

    RE: Using Atomos recorders for Higher Image Quality I'm adding this comment to the top of the page because this seems to be the most common question people have for me. The biggest limitation of the Atomos (or any other external recorder) is what the actual camera output is. The external recorder cannot invent new information that isn't in the output from the camera. The external HDMI out of the a6500 sends 8-bit 4:2:2 (as do the a7 cameras, shockingly) , while the internal recording is 8-bit 4:2:0. So, the small difference in chroma sub-sampling results in a minimal difference. This is the single biggest let down of the Sony mirrorless cameras, and the biggest advantage of the 10-bit internal GH5. The Atomos does wrap up that 8-bit 4:2:2 signal in a 10-bit wrapper (ProRES or DnX-HR) at a bit-rate of your choosing. But there is absolutely NO more information than what the camera outputs. This larger, much less compressed, file with the higher bit-rate does make things easier on your PC if you choose to edit without proxies. The biggest reason to use an external recorder like the Shogun on the a6500 is for the larger, higher-quality monitor. When shgooting 4k on the a6500, the built-in LCD dims considerably. This makes the LCD near impossible to see in sunlight. There are some people on the internet that say the Atomos file has extra information and higher image quality because it's 10-bit. But, to repeat, the Atomos cannot invent new information that the camera hasn't sent it. So, to reiterate, the a6500 output is a little better than the internal 4:2:2 versus 4:2:0. But both are 8-bit. In contrast, my Sony FS700 records internally as HD only, 8-bit 4:2:0. But the output the Atomos receives from the FS700 SDI is 4K 12-bit RAW. The Atomos can take all that extra info and record it as-is (22 minutes on a 500GB SSD) or make it 10-bit for a much smaller file. That's a significant difference that makes the external recorder much more valuable. Show less REPLY

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions6 жыл бұрын

    Okay, I understand. Unfortunately I'm too busy lately to do a side-by-side comparison between internal and external anytime soon. But I can say that the difference is very minimal. Internal is 4:2:0 8-bit and external out of a6500 is limited to 4:2:2 8-bit. So, even though the Shogun wraps up the video in a high bit-rate 10-bit file. The output of the a6500 is the limiting factor. When the Shogun first came out, it didn't take advantage of the RAW output of the Sony FS700. It was the same difference with 420 internal and 422 external 8-bit footage. I tried grading identical internal and external footage and found them to be almost identical.

    Yes, it is the original Atomos Shogun. It's not the Flame or Inferno. The a6500 will only output 422 8bit. The a6500 internal recording is 420 8bit. So there is a modest improvement. The Shogun wraps the 8bit footage in a 10bit ProRes file. But there is still only 8bits of actual video data. The real reason to use the Shogun with the a6500 is so you can actually see what you are recording. The small screen on the a6500 dims significantly when recording 4k. The footage looks great to me. I'm considering getting a Ninja Inferno, but I'm curious ... I know the hdmi uncompressed out from the a6500 is only 8-bit 4:2:2, but doesn't it make a difference capturing directly to ProRes 10-bit 422? Shouldn't it ultimately allow for more extensive color grading because the footage is now sitting in a 10-bit 422 codec.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions6 жыл бұрын

    The 10-bit ProRes will likely help in post-production because, while it does demand a higher data transfer rate for the large files, the footage is not as compressed as the internal AVCHD. Which means less strain on your GPU/CPU during real-time playback in editing and rendering. As far as grading, the only improvement would come from the 8:2:2 vs the 8:2:0. Nothing more. And that difference is barely discernible IMO. Just because the 8-bit signal is stored in a 10-bit wrapper doesn't mean any new information has been created. So no more extensive grading just because it's wrapped as 10-bit. That said, I'm always surprised at just how far I can push the grading on slog-2 AVCHD 8-bit footage. I had a minor catastrophe a year ago where I lost about half a day of my Atomos Shogun 4k (true) 10-bit footage from my FS700. Thankfully the finished project was going to be HD, so I used the internal 8-bit 8:2:0. I was able to push it almost as far as the real 10-bit 4:2:2 footage. If it's exposed correctly, 8-bit 4:2:0 can be great.

  • @BigDSProductions

    The better reason to get the Inferno is the large bright screen. My biggest gripe with the a6500 is how the screen dims when recording 4k. It's already not bright enough for sunny days. And focusing in 4k is so much easier with the larger screen.

    Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Unfortunately, I don't use the rig too often because I don't have many projects that require time lapse. But, I plan on using it tomorrow on a job. I'll try to remember to get some stills of the rig.

    Great video. Does the atomos shogun improve the quality of the Fullhd 100fps of the a6500?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    I'm using the first gen Shogun. It maxes out at 60p (50p for PAL) with any HDMI sources. I think the newer recorders can do faster frame rates, but I'm not 100% positive.

    Very nice! Recording Slog3 internally would there be any banding in sky?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    pekoo87 - I didn't think to check that at the time. I can't imagine it would have looked much different. the internal is 8-bit 4:2:0 and the external output only takes it up to 8-bit 4:2:2 (even though the Shogun wraps it as 10-bit prores). I really just need the external monitor/recorder to see what I'm doing. The glare on the built in LCD is horrible. And recording as 4k dims the screen making it even worse.

    hello! is there any chance to make a video(tutorial?) about your 4k workflow you described in description? creating the proxies, importing back and so. Also, do you have deeper understandings about the possible LUTs on shogun? Are they only for monitoring, or you can 'burn' them onto the recorded material as well(3D lut)? would be nice to hear some information on these, thanks a lot!

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    I tried making a tutorial once...once. It was not good. But I highly recommend watching this tutorial which is where I started. kzread.info/dash/bejne/faSbks1skaeWaJs.html It's focused on BlackMagic RAW, but almost everything in it applies perfectly to the CDNG footage of the Atomos recorders. After a few projects, I began to only use the proxy workflow for more complex projects. For more simple editing, I just do all of it in Resolve now.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    As far as LUT's are concerned, I only ever used the built-in SLOG2 LUT included with the Atomos recorders. I only used them to monitor, but I think you can burn them in if you really want. Unless you absolutely need to quickly deliver graded footage, I would avoid locking yourself into a LUT and just use the LUT to monitor. Then grade in post. I stopped using LUTs to monitor when Atomos released the HDR upgrade. But, again, that won't help you if you need graded footage fast.

  • @Rastinfilm
    @Rastinfilm7 жыл бұрын

    Big DS Productions thanks a lot! what is the difference between slog2 and hdr lut? both serves one purpose, correct exposing. if you dont burn them, why there are more luts to choose from? hmm. cheers!

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    I'll try my best to explain. The built-in SLOG2 LUT is taking the wide dynamic range of SLOG2 and displaying it as REC709. But it's a very simple compression of the dynamic range. Lots of highlight and shadow detail gets lost. If you're just trying to expose properly for skin tones and you're mastering in REC709, then use it for monitoring. Burn it in if you must deliver a graded product with no time to grade in post. And because it is a true LUT it can indeed be baked in (if I remember correctly). The HDR in the Atomos is not really a LUT. It is more a way to select what part of that wide dynamic range you're going to look at while monitoring. On the dimmer original Shogun, the low NIT display can't come close to displaying the full range. So, using a slider, you can choose to focus more on shadows, mid-tones, or highlights depending on what is most important to your scene. The waveform monitor still shows the entire range, but a line on the waveform shows you what portion of the image you're currently looking at. You can't burn in the HDR, because it's not really doing anything to the image.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    In my limited experience, the Atomos HDR is most helpful when I'm shooting RAW and I want to ensure that as much highlight or shadow detail gets captured. Exposing for skin-tone isn't as critical. Because it's CDNG RAW, I get a ton a latitude with exposure when grading. So, in post, I can adjust the exposure for proper skin tone while preserving that critical highlight or shadow detail that may not have been captured had I properly exposed for skin tone when shooting. If you watch this video I made this past winter (kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWF-s7ttdL3Xgrg.html) that I shot entirely in RAW, you'll notice that I always made sure the highlight detail in the clouds and sky was not clipped or compressed. It would have been much harder to do this using a LUT over the Atomos HDR.

    Thanks for sharing that! I can't record CinemaDNG from my FS700 on my Shogun Inferno. The problem can maybe come from the SSD. Which Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD are you using? With my extreme Pro 1To, the "rec" button of my inferno is in grey, I can't make it work.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    Keep in mind that I'm using the 1st gen Shogun, so the drive compatibility may be different. But I'm using the 480GB Extreme Pro successfully. Usually when I can monitor, but not record because the button is grayed out, it's because I'm in an unsupported frame rate. On the FS700, go to the Rec/Out settings and try changing the RAW Format setting to different frame rates/resolutions and see if that changes anything. Also, make sure you're using the latest firmware. I know Atomos has been rolling out new updates regularly lately. You might want to try posting to the Shogun users group on FB as well.

  • @BigDSProductions

    The first version of the FS700 has to have a hardware upgrade for RAW by Sony at one of their facilities. The second version, FS700R, has the RAW capabilities built in.

  • @yannaudouin

    shure. the thing is, i think, that the shugun inferno can only record CinemaDNG on "special" ssd like the angelbrid 4kraw or the G-tech ones. But i can t find any precise information on that.

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, my regular Shogun only worked with my Sandisk Extreme Pro SSDs for C-DNG. The other one's I had do not work for C-DNG, just ProRes/DnX-HR. But my Shogun would still try to record no matter which drive was inserted. The C-DNG recording would just fail with corrupt footage. The Inferno might have updated firmware that only tries to record with supported drives. I'm not sure. And it doesn't look like there are a lot of supported drives at this time for the Inferno. You can find a list of the drives Atomos officially support here by selecting the Shogun Inferno from the drop-down: www.atomos.com/drives

    Are these 4k DNG sequences? What kind of ssd do you use? Did you encounter any dropped or corrupted frames?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    Yes, this was recorded as 4K CDNG 24p using the old beta firmware for the 1st gen Shogun. Atomos has since released more polished firmware that allows for more compatibility with SSDs for RAW, continuous 120fps in 2k RAW (CDNG), and a few other features. I used Sandisk Extreme Pro SSDs from day 1. It was required with the beta firmware. No dropped or corrupted frames. Of course, I was just grabbing 20 seconds here, 45 seconds there, so no long clips. Check out my other videos to see more CDNG 4K RAW content.

    it's that 10bit or 8bit?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    It is 8-bit, SLOG2 with heavy grading. Unfortunately, the a6500 only does 8-bit internal or external. Internal it does 4:2:0 8-bit, while exporting to my Shogun, it does 4:2:2 8-bit. Of course the Shogun creates a 10-bit ProRes or DNxHR from the 8-bit signal. But there's no new data from those extra 2-bits. That's one of the areas that the GH5 has a leg up. But the a6500 works great as a B cam to my FS700 or an A cam for lesser projects. And I already have E-mount lenses and adapters, but no 4/3 gear. So, this was the cheaper alternative by a lot more than just the $600 msrp difference.

    I haven't used the 7Q side-by-side with the Shogun for comparison, so I can't say. Although I doubt there's much difference in image. The big difference is in the price and feature set. The 7Q is more functional and more expensive.

    Excellent colors! How are you liking the canon 40mm with the metabones?

  • @BigDSProductions
    @BigDSProductions7 жыл бұрын

    The 40mm STM has been my favorite lens, image-wise, since I got it. IMO, it's as sharp as my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 for a fraction of the price. And I love the 40mm focal length (when on the Speedbooster). The downside is the vague focus-by-wire and no optical image stabilization. But the a6500 IBIS must help, because this handheld footage looks much more stable than when I use the same lens on my NEX-FS700.

    These high-speed shots were all captured using a 1st-gen Metabones Speedbooster and the amazing Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. I got the lens on a great sale for $140!! Regular price is only $200. It's got downsides, but for that money, the level of details and sharpness across the entire image is amazing. And the f/2.8 with the Speedbooster yields some very nice bokeh (out-of-focus blur). Another plus if you have Canon camera that uses the STM is just how quiet the auto-focus is during video. The drawbacks are that it's not the most durable design and that the focus-by-wire can make fast manual focusing really obnoxious. But, you cannot go wrong with this lens. I have a few lenses that yield better images, but they all cost well over $1,000 used.

    Looks great! Is the Beta firmware stable? I'd love to be able to use it, but my plans include buying a Global Shutter equipped camera that Atomos are no longer going to support. I'm glad Sony FS-camera owners are being catered to, but Aja, Arri, and Canon owners are now getting nothing like the finished product we bought the Shogun to be. I don't plan on buying anything more from Atomos, and rate their product support well behind Canon and Pentax, brands that have a history of ignoring customer feedback.

    I've been researching hard for my next Sony camera. The FS5 with RAW upgrade seems just a tad out of range for now. For the Sony FS700R, is there anything else I need to shoot raw other than the camera and the recorder? Is there a paid key at all? Also, the ones that can do raw input... Shogun Inferno and Shogun Flame....? Any others that you know of?

  • @DennisNagelkirk

    I'm just now realizing you replied back! This has CERTAINLY cleared everything up, more than Atomos or anyone else has. THANKS! What would be really great, and don't strain yourself here, but it would be really cool to see/download 30 seconds of raw and 30 seconds of 4k prores (from the FS700r - Atomos or 7Q) to compare color stretchability in post. (No pressure). I did purchase a used fs700 and an Atomos Flame recorder. So far the 4k is neat, but the rig is now a little cumbersome. But this option is so much cheaper than an FS5 or FS7. Gonna try to get some miles out of this thing.
