Sony a6500 - Milford Point - 4k - Atomos Shogun - Canon 40mm STM - ILCE-6500

Фильм және анимация

More practice using my new camera. Filmed in UHD 4k at Milford Point in Milford, CT, on March 13, 2017. Shot using a Sony a6500 in SLOG-3 with a Canon 40mm STM f/2.8 pancake lens on a Metabones Speedbooster. Recorded in ProRes HQ using a first gen Atomos Shogun.
IMPORTANT: When you're putting together a gear bag for a new camera, don't forget a lens cloth! I forgot and I couldn't keep the polarizing filter clean as you can see in some shots.

The footage looks great to me. I'm considering getting a Ninja Inferno, but I'm curious ... I know the hdmi uncompressed out from the a6500 is only 8-bit 4:2:2, but doesn't it make a difference capturing directly to ProRes 10-bit 422? Shouldn't it ultimately allow for more extensive color grading because the footage is now sitting in a 10-bit 422 codec.

The 10-bit ProRes will likely help in post-production because, while it does demand a higher data transfer rate for the large files, the footage is not as compressed as the internal AVCHD. Which means less strain on your GPU/CPU during real-time playback in editing and rendering. As far as grading, the only improvement would come from the 8:2:2 vs the 8:2:0. Nothing more. And that difference is barely discernible IMO. Just because the 8-bit signal is stored in a 10-bit wrapper doesn't mean any new information has been created. So no more extensive grading just because it's wrapped as 10-bit. That said, I'm always surprised at just how far I can push the grading on slog-2 AVCHD 8-bit footage. I had a minor catastrophe a year ago where I lost about half a day of my Atomos Shogun 4k (true) 10-bit footage from my FS700. Thankfully the finished project was going to be HD, so I used the internal 8-bit 8:2:0. I was able to push it almost as far as the real 10-bit 4:2:2 footage. If it's exposed correctly, 8-bit 4:2:0 can be great.

The better reason to get the Inferno is the large bright screen. My biggest gripe with the a6500 is how the screen dims when recording 4k. It's already not bright enough for sunny days. And focusing in 4k is so much easier with the larger screen.

Excellent colors! How are you liking the canon 40mm with the metabones?

The 40mm STM has been my favorite lens, image-wise, since I got it. IMO, it's as sharp as my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 for a fraction of the price. And I love the 40mm focal length (when on the Speedbooster). The downside is the vague focus-by-wire and no optical image stabilization. But the a6500 IBIS must help, because this handheld footage looks much more stable than when I use the same lens on my NEX-FS700.

Very nice! Recording Slog3 internally would there be any banding in sky?

pekoo87 - I didn't think to check that at the time. I can't imagine it would have looked much different. the internal is 8-bit 4:2:0 and the external output only takes it up to 8-bit 4:2:2 (even though the Shogun wraps it as 10-bit prores). I really just need the external monitor/recorder to see what I'm doing. The glare on the built in LCD is horrible. And recording as 4k dims the screen making it even worse.

Thank you for response. I think of a6500, but I´m really woried about the lcd screen. Did you try something like this? www.amazon.com/JJC-LCH-A6-A6500-A6300-A6000/dp/B01GIWRH0E Could it help?

pekoo87 - Thank you for the link. I haven't seen that before, but for that price, I'll have to give it a shot. I had something like that years ago on a Panasonic pocket zoom and it worked great.

The a6500 only does 4k in 24p, 25p, and 30p regardless of which recorder you use. It's a limitation of the camera output, not the recorder. www.atomos.com/cameras/sony-a6500 Surprisingly to most, the a7S (or R) II's are subject to the same limitation. Unfortunately, if you want more, you need a different camera.
