The thing about Brexit is 1. the british exeptionalism... too many English to this day believe they are somehow special. Common phrases during the campaign were "They need us more than we need them" and Torry politicians to this day blame the EU for each and every problem there is in the UK. Somehow the English believed that they can leave the EU and yet still have all the benefits of it. to this day they complain about regulations and act like they should be treated differently to every other third country. They claim they are being punished by the EU through border controls and VAT when in reality they are just treated like every other non-memeber nation (e.g. the US). A large proportion of the English still have not understood the European idea of integration and cooperation through compromise. They still believe they are this huge Empire in which they can dictate their terms onto others, when in reality they are just one nation of many others. Most of Europe has understood that and that relationships require compromise to attain growth in unity. 2. The referendum was never binding. It was basically a poll and never meant to be a binding decision. Tory politicians made it that by claiming "we cannot ignore the will of the voters" when it became abundandly clear after the referendum that the actual majority of citizen did not want to leave and protested like crazy. 3. A campaign full of lies and deceit. Whilst the remain side tried to argue with facts, but was not too concerned about the whole leave thing, the leave side started huge campaigns spilling massive lies about the EU and how a life outside the EU would look like. They claimed that they would have more money when they leave that they would invest in the NHS (didn't happen to this day), that they would finally have the freedome to negotiate better free trade agreeents that the EU (didn't happen to this day), that they would finally get british fish back for british fishers (didn't happen) and that they would finally be able to stop illegal migration and control who is within their borders (which did not happen either). They also claimed that the EU would need the UK more than the other way around, so they stated that the EU would simply let the UK do their own thing whilst simultaniously beeing in the single market (undermining all Eu regulations). Obviously all these things are mere hubris and clear lies, but people fell for it. 4. the referendum was "won" by a marginal majority. If I remember correctly, the result was 53 to 47%, whilst the proportion of voters was extremely limited. Many people didn't even bother to vote because they thought no one would be so stupid to actually leave the EU. The next day when the results were clear, many people were in shock over the result because it seemed outrageous to them that the leave campaign actually would get a majority. 5. Russian meddling in the campaigns. Shortly after the referendum it became clear that the leave side had been heavily funded and supported by russian agencies because Putin's Russia wants to weaken the EU. 6. the UK isn't a single entitiy, but a Union of several Kindoms who's people voted with different results. Scottland and Northern Irleland clearly wanted to remain, whilst the majority of English wanted to leave. It furthered the already existing tensions within the UK.

What Americans don't realise is that, the really old English, still rule, after the so called independence, who do you think the well to do were trading with in the old country.... hence the special relationship. It's always the 1% no matter what the name on the tin says.

A1 refers to the condition of a ship below the water line is rated a,b,c and above the water line is rated 1,2,3, so A1 is the highest standard of ship condition. The term has been used for cars, steaks etc as an alagory of quality.

They should have asked what US Americans thought of the UK because that would have be much more of a challenging for them, as half of them seem to think the UK, Britain and England are the same thing.

We have regional languages and dialects, so among what you have seen, there was: Corsican, celtic, créole... the song white and black was written by Gainsboroug. One other song "l'amour à la française " was in franglais. And Sébastien tellier is famous and the song "divine " was also a hit before. Personally I stopped watching in late 90s because it was just political and everyone sing in English now (except French and Italian ❤) edit: Barbara pravi sang a neo realist song like piaf, probably the best style to represent us.

For thinking about using the US system to understand the UK, I think a few people have described the parliamentary system as if there was no president and the leader of the biggest party in Congress became the prime minister, and the PM then appointed the various Secretaries of State etc from other members of Congress. You still have a separate Upper House too in the Senate. Not an exact analogy but pretty close.

Double decker buses are needed if lots of people use them-congestion in London means single deckers are not practical. Yes you get bike lanes in more suburban areas- I live in Stratford (near the Olympic Park) we have them here.

While many Brits agree that the House of Lords is an outdated body you need to be aware that it's not just made up of hereditary peers, many of the members were either originally members of the House of Commons or given a peerage because they were prominent in their own fields of expertise. Most of the peers only hold a lifetime peerage and this is not hereditary.

The House of Lords has more than some hereditary lords, it has former prime ministers , former heads of big business, archbishops, successful entrepreneurs, captains of industry, Senior Justices of the Courts, those who’ve been awarded knighthoods for service to the country. In essence they’re very experienced in all fields and scrutinise the bills coming from the House of Commons to ensure their contents are lawful. The Commons are regular people who have been elected to represent their constituency by voters.
