    They showed how valuable they were during the Falklands War. Without them, many experts say, the war might not have been won.( and that's over 40 years ago !)

    I've had dogs all my life, but Inca is our first shepherd (GSD) and I now understand why the Military and Police use them. I've never known any of our other dogs to particularly use their eyesight, but she notices EVERYTHING! She's so quick on the uptake, which sounds great but can be a pain sometimes. Malinois are fast and extremely agile, able to jump incredible heights.

    We had a german shepherd when i was a kid apparently she used to pace round the pram guarding me. I think they are the perfect guard dog without being unstable and dangerous, a sweeping comment, its more more complicated but Tara never hurt anyone, was totally loyal and loving, but god help anyone that messed with her. Same as the German Shepherd cross breed we had after her.

    Greyhounds can see movement of small objects and animals half a mile away. Plenty of other sight hounds as well. No use as guard dogs though.

    Vertical take off has been around a long time, we had Harrier jump jet from the late 60's, so I think there must still be things helicopters can do that vertical take off aircraft can't.

    The German Shepherd is not known for the strongest bite force there are a couple of dogs that out do it in that department, really for the Shepherd it’s the all round capability it has, there will be a dog better than the Shepherd in everything the Shepherd is good at but none as good at everything as the Shepherd is, all dog breeds offer the owner very similar things but the Shepherd has something extra, lots of people will be reading this and thinking it’s wrong but if you’ve owned a Shepherd you know what their like.

    The American Osprey, which acts as both a helicopter and aeroplane has a multi role purpose, from troop carrier to supply aircraft, it can hold 24 troops (seated) or 32 (floor loaded) or it can carry 10,000 pounds of cargo, I think it went into service around the year 2006

    Osprey has problems. Many crashes and I believe there are big question marks over its safety. F35 great , but newest production machine cant be deployed as the software is faulty. Swivel jets go back as far as the Harrier and the P1127/Kestrel.. been around 60 years.

  • @arghjayem

    @arghjayem

    @@Bobmeanstreakthe Ospreys problems are overstated. It had a total of four crashes during testing from 1991 to 2000. Since the V-22 became operational in 2007, there have been 12 crashes, including two in combat zones, and several other accidents and incidents have killed a total of 32 people. The crashes have occurred mainly with the most common version of the Osprey, the MV22B used by the Marines. Then a few with the CV22B used by the USAF special forces. There have been no recorded crashes with the newest variant of the V22, the CMV22B used by the Navy for COD flights. But what about regular helicopters in use in the US Military (limiting it to the US as I don’t think anyone else operates the Osprey aircraft)? Like apaches, Blackhawks etc? There have been twelve helicopter crashes since the start of 2024 alone! So I think it being dangerous is kind of overstated. Considering the mechanism, the tilt rotor, and the power of the engines you’d expect far more crashes TBH.

    VTOL aircraft such as the F-35 variants and the Harrier are not going to replace helicopters anytime soon. While very useful (and objectively cool) they're more expensive to build and maintain. Servicing is much more complicated. And taking off like that uses a boatload of fuel limiting both range and the weight they can carry. They both have their place (we couldn't have won the Falklands War without the Harrier) but I wouldn't scrap your helicopter just yet.

    They choose the Belgian as they are lighter than the German Shepard for the troopers who have to carry their dogs while deploying from a helicopter and parachuting and they are still great at smelling and attacking but not as forcefully as a German Shepard but I certainly wouldn’t want to be attacked by a Belgian as although a slightly smaller dog they are extremely trainable and really are working dogs and can go for hours a day!

    Helicopters can carry large underslung loads, this would be a real problem for a VTOL Jet using vectored thrust straight onto said load(s).

When the German Shepherds died, I was offered a Belgian Malinois. I didn't know the breed but I took a chance. I don't want any more dogs of any other breed. He's the best dog I've ever had.

    Hills and helicopters is a complicated problem, they prefer to be level if they're not moving in some direction but you can both take off and land from uneven ground, including mountains, sure. When you're taking off, say you're facing uphill, if as soon as you lift the aircraft is going to be moving backwards so you have to level off quickly - also you have to watch the blades with the side of hills, and interesting things happen with downwash.

    Helicopters are built for loitering, jump jets are built for getting airborne where there is little to no runway and will switch into normal jet mode very quickly. Harriers and F35B's can operate without an airfield but as soon as they are clearing the treeline they are becoming jets.

    @@gmdhargreaves The rapidly moving air over the top of the blade creates low pressure; the air beneath the blade is moving slower, so it creates higher pressure High pressure under the rotor blades creates lift which causes the aircraft to rise. Correct nothing to do with the ground.

    During the Afghanistan war, America used their dogs to clear buildings of enemy combatants. The dogs worked well, until they came across cables and wires on the ground. The dogs were never trained with wires on the floor. This confused the dogs, so they ran out of the building. The soldiers would think the building was clear. Only to enter the building to find enemy combatants. This very simple oversight sadly cost American many unnecessary k.i.a.
