WhizzKidzUK

WhizzKidzUK

In 2020, we are celebrating 30 years of moving life forward for young wheelchair users.

In the last 30 years, we have supplied thousands of pieces of equipment right across the UK, campaigned for change and supported disabled young people through skills training, clubs and employability.

The right equipment and support opens up a world of possibility for young people. However, there are still huge barriers that hold young wheelchair users back.

We are determined to break down those barriers that disabled people and their families face in everyday life. But we can’t do it without your help. Together, we will strive to make everyday obstacles, the everyday possible, through 2020 and beyond.

Wow Pip’s put on a lot of weight but her voice is still the same 😊 If I close my eyes and hear her talk it’s like I’m 5 years old again, getting ready for school hearing that high pitched voice full of enthusiasm and zest for life… But knowing what I know now she’s probably got some issues she’s having trouble dealing with and it seems to be her way of coping. I wish her and everyone involved in my childhood is doing alright now though 🙂

When did the term able bodied suddenly become “non-disabled “? This political correctness again?

It’s just a thought but I wondered if you also use their recognised medical qualification as well ie occupational therapist or physiotherapist? This instant recognition of expertise with a would immediately provide a greater sense of trust and reassurance for parents and the general public.

Speaking as a (retired) driver of two different types (ramp and lift) of wheelchair-accessible taxi, I'd add that straps to the rear of the wheelchair should always be in an "X" pattern as opposed to an "I I" pattern, especially in vehicles with a high center of gravity. In addition to being more secure, it lessens the chances of causing damage to larger wheels and/or wheelchairs with a longer wheelbase.

I’m a full time power chair user and must point out the joystick on Ruby’s chair is positioned a bit far away for her! She shouldn’t have to straighten her arms just to reach it. It would be great to have a shorter armrest so the joystick is much closer. Funnily enough I have the opposite problem on my own power chair.

Awesome !! Hope we can have this service in Switzerland ASAP... It would change a lot for people with disabilities... Having the choice to move and call an uber/taxi whenever you want must be amazing... Right now, if you like to go somewhere with a wheelchair by car (not your own) you have to call a few days before -sometimes week(s)- to be sure to have someone available !!!

It's not brilliant. Today I took UBERx Share. I thought with it I can save some money. My decission was a bad one. It was waste of my time and money. I felt very insecured. The driver was good but he was taking one after another riders on my trip. For that I had to do 30 minutes ride, to 150 minutes ride. That was a horrible experience.

I'd like people to know that when I say yes or no that I am sure. Don't say "Are you sure?" Also don't say "Aww" all the time when you are speaking to me!!!! "So you are well today aww" Is patronising and ridiculous!!!!

Sadly no true Hannah, The NHS doesn't provide wheelchairs for everyone. The criteria is strict and that's why Whizz kids exists. An amazing charity.

People always ask me why I have phisio and why I'm somers on crutches or in a wheelchair. The answer is, I have something wrong with my legs that makes my bones grow faster than my muscles and it puts me in a lot of pain and my legs won't go straight so I need them to get around sometimes.

The right wheelchair is necessary for each person's comfort, stability & independence. If it were not for my partner, I would not have the chair

  • @cpchick81
    @cpchick818 жыл бұрын

My partner and I have given up things we love like most of our social life, meals out, holidays or the need to move flat to make sacrifices to buy me the chair I will soon be getting as my family cannot help. I campaigned and approached charities and carer's centres but was unsuccesful. We too had a limited budget and the wait for the new chair has been painful and upsetting for us both, creating family conflict because of the amount of money needed. Wheelchaiir services have no idea how to fully assess people to get them what they need, no matter whether they are kids or adults. Fortunately I found better assesment elsewhere. My carers were convinced that with my needs I would be properly provided for by them, but I was not the only one told I am apparently not disabled enough, I wasn't even allowed hydrotherapy as a compliment to physio.

Hi Smita, thanks so so much for this video and for sharing your daughter's experience with wheelchair services. I agree that people have a right to get what they need from them I have spastic quadriplegic CP with hydrocephalus and was given a basic manual wheelchair with a 2 inch basic foam cushion as there was "no money" although they realised my need for a powerchair as I cannot self propel a chair. That was my last assesment. The chair was used once and I was pushed in it. The seating was so basic I could not sit up at all. They said if I need anything better I have to buy it myself. I was forced to stop using the chair and they also gave me a list of shops to buy from. I have scoliosis, lordosis and kyphosis and asked to be referred to the postural support service but was told I was not disabled enough. I require hoists for transfers and help in all daily activities. I am 34. Over 8 years on, the powerchair my partner and family struggled to buy me is old and uncomfortable.

+Tony Richards I see your comment but have no idea whether it is positive or negative. Good drivers leave minicab firms to work for Uber or vice-versa? The one Uber driver I spoke to was loving it and doing very well financially, and was cheaper than alternatives.
