The Social Model of Disability

What is the social model of disability?
The social model of disability says that people are disabled by the barriers they face in society rather than their medical impairments or differences.
Many of the barriers in society are physical, such as kerbs, stairs, broken lifts, inaccessible transport and toilets.
But another barrier can be the attitudes of other people and the way that they perceive disabled people.
Attitude barriers are often assumptions, such as believing that disabled people can't work, have children or be independent.
These negative attitudes and physical barriers can stop disabled people from having equal opportunities to everyone else - which is why the social model is so important.
By recognising these barriers adjustments can be made to remove them, creating equality and a more accessible, inclusive society.
It is important to remember that not all disabled people support the social model.
Everybody has their own opinions and it is not up to anybody else to tell them how to view their disability.
