What is the social model of disability? - Scope video

In this film, we ask prominent disabled people from the disability community what is the social model of disability, and why is it important to them?
The social model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for disabled people. When barriers are removed, disabled people can be independent and equal in society, with choice and control over their own lives.
Disabled people developed the social model of disability because the traditional medical model did not explain their personal experience of disability or help to develop more inclusive ways of living.
An impairment is defined as long-term limitation of a person’s physical, mental or sensory function.

The society sees disability as a problem. Barriers that create it must be overcome to enable children with disability to access: education, classrooms, play grounds, recreation centers, etc.

I still don't feel like the social model is exactly the right way. it's better than what I think we term the medical model? but I feel like it goes too far the other way. my view is that it's not one or the other thing that causes problems, its both our physical disabilities/illnesses/limits and the world around us plus peoples attitudes all together. I do have problems caused by my disability (spina bifida) as well as the problem of physical environment and attitudes towards me. I feel like like the social model wants to ignore my very real disability a bit. I think we need a more middle ground social/medical model.

Yes, I completely agree. I actually just had a discussion about this with my classmates. I feel this model completely ignores the fact that there actually is an impairment that causes problems, but these problems are all the more aggravated by the outside forces working against you--by forces, I mean exactly what you say--the physical environment and societal assumptions/attitudes.

I agree too. I see disability as just a word describing what I am not able to do. So that would be see, smell, walk, read or whatever the case may be. Being able to cope with not being able to do that thing requires input from society and community. The social model is not a definition in my view but a realistic expectation in a inclusive society.

I'd like to see a simplified version for people like me with learning challenges. It's quite hard to concentrate on a serious subject with the loud background music and flipping across to other people in split interviewing. I'm still not really understanding what the social model is.

Thank you for educating the public about the social model of disability. As an activist here in the United States, I join with you in continuing to dedicate myself toward helping to continue to transform attitudes about what it truly does mean to have a disability! In light of how the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is fast approaching here in the U.S., this video is an awesome way to help continue to educate the public! #ADA25

Thank you for this video. It is going to be really helpful for a training course that I am going to run. Just one request: could you remove the background music? It is really loud and makes it hard to hear the speakers - I had to put on subtitles to focus on what the speakers were saying. Thank you.

Hi Ros, thanks so much for your feedback. It is really useful and we will certainly keep it in mind for the future, however I'm afraid we cannot retroactively change our content. All our more recent information films do not feature music all the way through and this is something we will continue with. Your feedback is important to us so thank you again for getting in touch.
