Hi! Welcome to my messy bookshelves! My name is Nicky. I’m a 40 year old wife and mom of two beautiful kids and 3 precious doggies who loves nothing more than spending time in our nerdy home. I hope to make some bookish friends and have many bookish conversations with my fellow readers. Thank you for visiting my channel!

WE WANT TO *SEE* THE DOGS 🤩
What a great July you had! I really enjoyed Sense and Sensibility. I put down Tale of Genji at 33% last year and will pick it up again soon (and will probably put it down again at another 30% or so lol).
That sounds like me! This is probably the third time I pick up Tale of Genji and every time I get a little further but I am so tired of him as a character lol.
You inspired me to read the actual Sanditon, so thank you! Happy reading, and hopefully Genghi (sp?) gets his life together soon! 😉
I hope you enjoy it! It was short enough that I wasn’t too attached to any characters so it wasn’t a big disappointment though I really wonder what she would have done with the rest of the novel!
Pride & Prejudice is my favorite. Read it 3 times. Enjoyed it 3 times. Maybe best books in English lit, in my opinion. Read all of her other novels. Can't say I enjoyed them much. I was greatly disappointed. Read them a second time to give them another chance. Same result.
Sorry you didn’t enjoy the others but glad you enjoyed Pride and Prejudice!
Glad you got to enjoy Sanditon finally! 😅
@@ellenmadebookclub finally right?! It would have been interesting to see how it progressed if she could have finished it.
I love Jane Austen but, I don’t think I could read her books back to back. 😅
@@Maeve_Ever_Books and I will probably never do it again haha. 😅 It was a whole mood this month.
@@MyMessyBookshelf I don’t blame you!!
❤📚😂❤ "sick of his feelings", I was cracking up. I'm glad you've had an amazing time with Jane Austen this month!
@@starlasell5698 I mean it though! He’s been driving me nuts for 400 pages with his feelings 🤣 But yes, Jane Austen has been lovely and comforting. I don’t know that I’ll ever read her back to back again but it was like a warm hug this month.
@@MyMessyBookshelf 😅 I'm glad you had the warm hug!!
I just realized I've been saying "Sandition" and not "Sanditon" for years! Yikes!
@@awebofstories 🤣 I’m sure we’ve all done that at some time or another.
Sorry to hear about your dog. Best wishes.
The Thursday Murder Club is quite fun...and it is being made into a movie!
I really want to read Ban this Book. Have to write it down so I remember
It sounds adorable and on the back of my copy there is a list of “banned books” some of which I cannot fathom why they’ve ever been banned. Who would ban Matilda and Judy Blume?!
@@MyMessyBookshelf I watched a Judy Blume Documentary..Judy Blume Forever on Prime video. It was really interesting and she talked about her books being banned.
The longitude book reminds me of my dad - you have similar taste in nautical adventures that he had. ❤
I find them fascinating! 🙂 Glad to hear someone out there has had similar tastes!
Ban this book sounds fantastic! I love the premise Those bookmarks look adorable. Thinking of you 💛 take care
There is even a list of banned books on the back of my copy! Thank you for your kind thoughts!
Hi, sorry about the loss of your dog. Speaking of books, l red Dr. Jackyl and Mr Hyde when I was a teenager. I don't know the titles of books that you mentioned but I can say you that l read a few pages of a book the first thing in the morning. Today I finished "Casa di bambola" (Et Dukkehjem) by Ibsen. It's a drama theatre, the ending of the opera is surprising. I' ve started reading "The little book of Hygge" no fiction book about the Danish way to live well.
I’ve heard of Hygge but don’t know much about it. I have never read anything drama like you mention but it sounds intriguing!
It's heartbreaking when you lose a pet, so sorry. Great spooky choices. When you get to Jeckyl and Hyde a thing to remember is that even though the Jeckyl and Hyde trope is part of the lexicon today, when the book came out it was a mystery and them being the same person was a massive twist. I haven't read Pickwick Papers, but if you're going to dive into Dickens I'd be inclined to go with David Copperfield, it's a really easy read despite its size and I much preferred it to Great Expectations
Thank you for your kind words. So sad that us modern readers don’t get to experience the twist that was intended! I have heard many people mention David Copperfield but didn’t know if that should be my next experience with Dickens or not because I don’t know much about it. Better than Pickwick Papers for a Dickens novice?
@@MyMessyBookshelf whether it’s better than Pickwick Papers I honestly don’t know, I haven’t gotten to Pickwick Papers yet, I have heard that it’s a bit divisive though, some people love it some really can’t stand it. David Copperfield is basically a fictional autobiography, it’s kinda light on plot but it’s some of his best characters so it’s really easy to read. It was also Dickens favourite of his own books.
I just read The Island of Doctor Moreau, it's fun I would go in blind as I did. Longitude is amazing! I live near the royal maritime museum where Harrison's chronometers are kept now, they are wonderful to see. i enjoyed the lost city of Z but I read it straight after Endurance so it didn't quite live up to that.
That is so cool! I love maritime museums and have been to several here in the states but would love to visit that one and see his early creations! Am I correct in thinking that the first one he built is there? The Lost City of Z sounds fascinating but I will probably read South first.
@@MyMessyBookshelf H1 H2 H3 and H4 are all there, later on in the book she talks about the restoration of them and that is an amazing feat in itself. There's also some Harrison stuff in the Royal Observatory which is just up the hill, and the Cutty Sark down the road, it's a naval history nerd's dream haha.
I think it’s good to talk about your feelings. Losing a fur baby is so hard! I’m glad that you’re finding joy in reading. Hugs! ❤
Thank you so much! I hate to be a bore. I’m already a 40 year old woman talking about books on the internet so the last thing I need is to bore people with my dogs 😅
You might like The Terror by Dan Simmons, it's a historical thriller about an attempt to find a NW passage through the Artic.
Thank you so much for the recommendation! That definitely sounds up my alley. Looking it up now!
@@MyMessyBookshelf Paul @readersretreat is doing a readalong of it in August and seems like a few other people may be joining him if you're interested.
Sorry for the loss of your pupper! That’s so sad! 😞 The Island of Doctor Moreau is awesome and creepy! And if you like it, Silvia Moreno-Garcia did a sort of remix of it set in Mexico called The Daughter of Doctor Moreau which is really good, too! This is a fantastic haul! Ban this Book sounds interesting.
Thank you for watching and the recommendation. I have read something from Silvia Moreno Garcia before but I can’t remember what it was though I remember that I liked it!
So sorry about the loss of your pooch, hope you're going ok. I love Wells (& Bernard Shaw), great Fabian Socialists. I must read more Dickens also, don't know why I haven't - odd. 'Longitude' is brilliant. The Christie bio looks really interesting too, must search that one out. I loved hearing your hound make an appearance, mine always features in my videos. Dogs are just the best. Stay well.
Never heard of Bernard Shaw so I must investigate now. Longitude is a success so far… will probably finish it today. And yes, dogs are the best!
@@MyMessyBookshelf: Shaw is an Anglo-Irish playwright & essayist & contemporary of Wells. Both were brilliant advocates for socialism & a fair deal for all.
Oh Nicky! I love that you got Ban This Book! You’re going to love it. I used to use How To Read Like An English Professor as a summer reading for my AP English students. The Thursday Murder Club books are terrific! What an awesome book haul! 😊
Thanks, Pat!
💔🐶📚 Great haul. I can't wait to hear your review of South!
I am looking forward to it!
I was also intrigued by Lost City of Z after having read The Wager and looking up what else he'd written. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on that. Maybe after you've been to the poles five more times 😂 Haha just joking, whatever makes you happy! The bookmarks are really cute. I keep seeing the Thursday Murder books everywhere, I thought they were a thing years ago but they seem to be making a comeback. Or I'm mixing them up with something else. Anyway, hope you enjoy them all!
The Thursday Murder ones have been around for a while I think and the first one was out of stock at my bookstore for a long time so I snatched it up when I saw it. I can’t help this compulsion I have for the Arctic and Antarctic adventure stories 🤣
That bookmark is too cute and I hope your haul made you feel a little better. I’m going to see if my library has Ban that book. Haven’t heard of that one.
Thank you and yes I am looking forward to that one. It sounded very cute but thought provoking.
Dogs are family. So sorry...... The Endurance was the most amazing survival story I have ever read. Wow. OK, if you enjoy reading all these nonfiction books on the sea then definitely get on with Moby Dick. The white whale awaits!
🤣 I think this is why Moby Dick is my nemesis! Not only do I have personal experience at sea, but I love survival stories and particularly those set at sea! 😅 This is why I’m determined to read Moby Dick someday!
I’ll be reading Halloween Party next month. My library’s book club is doing an Agatha Christie month - we are supposed to read a Christie - whichever you want - and then talk about it. I’ve not read Sanditon either for similar reasons. I’ll be interested to know what people say. I did read The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Dickens even though that was only half published. I’m really sad I’ll never find out happens!
Have you read Halloween Party before? I find it a bit different than some of her other Hercule Poirot books but very enjoyable. So sad you will never get an ending! That is what I fear with Sanditon and with Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell because I understand that one is also incomplete.
@@MyMessyBookshelf I’ve been told that Wives and Daughters is really only missing a last few pages and that it’s pretty much wrapped up. I haven’t read Halloween Party yet but I thought it sounded different from her usual Poirot stories.
Hi Nicky, l haven't red "The time Machine" yet but I'm intrigued by your second presentation "Sandition". I didn't know it so I looked it up online. I discovered that it's a unfinished novel by Austin. By the way, this week I've finished a interesting book, it's speaking of the life of Marie Curie, a great woman.
Marie Curie is a fascinating woman! Thank you for watching!
Oh no, that Sanditon mishap sounds so frustrating ^^' at least it is balanced by a 5* read
Thank goodness lol
I am going to need to read The Time Machine! It sounds fascinating!
It was!
I have never read any HG Wells or much Sci Fi at all but The Time Machine sounds interesting.
It was very good and short!
The Time Machine was a fave for me too. I watched the reboot and then the original movies years ago which prompted me to read the book. Which I enjoyed. I’m so sorry about Sanditon. The tv show is so good. I still need to watch s3. Yeah I would have been very disappointed if I realized it wasn’t the actual novel. But I do hope when you read it, that it’s a good read. And that the ending is satisfying.
I may watch the show. I’ve heard nothing but good things! I remember the older version of the Time Machine but it’s been years so I may need to revisit.
@@MyMessyBookshelf I hope you do watch it. The original Time Machine is a little cheesy, I think it’s still good. lol
So glad you loved The Time Machine. I thought it was pretty terrific too! I think I downloaded Sanditon on my kindle for Jane Austen July, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm going to check right now to make sure I downloaded the actual book by Jane Austen! Sorry that happened to you, Nicky.
So far I’ve loved both HG Wells that I’ve read! As to Sanditon it was my own fault but I was very unhappy sitting there reading and thinking to myself with every page “this can’t be Jane Austen” 🤣
@@MyMessyBookshelf awww! 😊
Haha the disappointment! Sorry for laughing, I just think it's somehow very appropriate for Jane Austen July, you starting to read this book and thinking it's one thing, and coming to find out that it's really something quite different! I can see you fanning yourself with your handkerchief and reaching for your smelling salts! XD I hope the real thing will be more enjoyable for you! Ending or no ending ^^
It was pretty comical and yes I definitely needed my smelling salts! 🤣
❤
❤📚❤️ I read The Time Machine years ago and really loved it. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
It really was good!
Ive never read _Vanity Fair_ (must be brilliant) when are you rereading it? 🎉
Honestly I’m not sure. I keep feeling drawn to it but I have so many other unread books on my shelves it seems unfair to reread something that long right now! 😅
I just finished Endurance,too. It’s so memorable!
It’s fascinating isn’t it? I just bought Ernest Shackleton’s book detailing the events from his point of view. Looking forward to it!
I loved Dorian Gray! And I hope you enjoy Anne of Green Gables. :)
Dorian Gray may be a fall read for me this year :)
Sorry for your dog, I still miss mine and its been many years. I watched the mini series of Sense & Sensibility and enjoyed it this month, i still think the film is the best Austen film. I absolutely love Mansfield Park, I'm re-reading that next year to see if its still one of my favourites, but I do see why some people don't like it as much. Sanditon didn't bother me because it's only really the start of the story.
I think I may watch that mini series because it is one I haven’t seen before!
I am so sorry to hear about your fur baby. 🐾❤️ I’m glad you are still posting! Eleanor Dashwood and Jane Eyre are my two favorite heroines. They are both empathetic but strong.
Thank you for the kind words! He is dearly missed. I completely agree about your heroines! Jane Eyre is another favorite of mine!
I read Sense and Sensibility for the first time and really enjoyed it. Jane Austen's novels are so wonderful I can see why you want to continue with her other works. I am currently enjoying Pamela by Samuel Richardson, a novel they say Jane Austen loved. Thanks for sharing about your pup.
Pamela has been on my radar for some time but I’ve never read it. I hope you enjoy it!
I haven’t read any of these 😅
Neither have I 😅 so we are in good company together. Are any on your Tbr?
@@MyMessyBookshelfNot really 😅 I think the Scarlett letter is most up my ally out of these, and Dorian Grey is also a possibility, so maybe some day!
❤📚❤️ I'm glad you have books to help comfort and console you. I'm so sorry for your loss. 😢
Thank you for the kind words!
Hot takes coming in! 😂… I agree about John Steinbeck. There are several modernish authors that I’m told are classic must read books… and I just found him boring.
Great minds think alike or so they say! 😅
I’m so sorry about your dog. You don’t have to apologize after talking about your baby. He was yours. You talk about him as much or as little as you want. 🥹 I would like to know more about the Sanditon ending too since it was unfinished by JA. I wouldn’t mind reading it.
Thank you for the kind words! I am hoping the lack of an ending doesn’t bother me too much!
I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you love and prayers. ❤
Thank you!
❤
Oh no, I'm so sorry about your pup. Dogs (and pets in general) are so precious, it is always so hard to lose one of them. No need to apologize - you're human, just sharing human things. It's not depressing, it's honest and vulnerable. Thanks for letting us know, so that we can send a little bit of support your way. Thinking of you, take care!
Thank you so much!
