The Line Laboratory

The Line Laboratory

At The Line Laboratory we test all kinds of fishing line for many characteristics including:

Line Construction
Line Diameter
Breaking Strain
Abrasion Resistance
Knot Strength

Results are then published for each line in the KZread video along with our website linelaboratory.com. The website also contains comparisons between all the lines tested and all of the raw data from each test done.

    Was the PR tied with a bobbin under tension (such as using a Shimano or Beiter bobbin) or by hand and then cinched under tension? I find it difficult to believe that a PR tied with a bobbin properly would break inside the knot. If tied by hand wrapping the line (not under tension) and then cinching, this explains why the braid bit into itself and broke in the knot. A properly tied PR with bobbin is 100% the strength of the lines it is securing and will most likely break on or near the spool.

    Braid to mono or braid to fluorocarbon is a big FAIL. Let me explain. I came here because my line has been breaking on big fish since switching to fluorocarbon to braid setup in attempt to avoid extra hardware. I did my own experiments. The problem is the braid is cutting the mono or fluorocarbon under pressure. Doesn't matter the knot, it's gonna happen. In short, back to ball bearing swivels for leader work.

  • @thelinelaboratory
    @thelinelaboratory2 күн бұрын

    That can absolutely happen if the mono is significantly weaker than the braid and is why for this series of tests the leader was strong enough to avoid this occurring. I would be interested to know if using a swivel with the same braid and leader is stronger overall than the leader directly connected to the braid via an FG or something like that. I would imagine that the weak point would then be the knot in the braid to swivel connection.

    @@thelinelaboratory Hi thanks for your vid btw. So yes just pull testing by hand I had a harder time breaking the knots tied direct to swivel rings which is how I came to realize the braid was cutting the softer material on line to line. Yes if I used a heavier mono or fluorocarbon it was harder to break but it eventually slices through and not because of adding more pressure, it's now a time factor. A few more shakes of a fish head and it cuts through even with same pressure. Even a heavier braid softened the slicing percentage but again not trying to go heavier on the braid and not trying to use heavier leader material. The lightest possible, less harder to see is better for more catch percentages. So in leader applications, it's a fail for me. Crazy how I got away with it so long until some big fish came around and it was a wrap. Lesson learned. Same lb test braid to same pound test mono / fluorocarbon fails big.

    Very unusual results. There's good and bad about both capacities. The P1 being thicker is actually weaker in the abrasion test. Pick the one that is more fitting to your environment or type of fishing technique

    Just wanted to point out a minor detail. At 2:12 you say average thickness .208 mm, claimed .160 mm and that this is +130% above claimed. This is actually +30% above claimed or otherwise 130% of the claimed thickness. Just thought I'd mention it for the sake of accuracy. Nevertheless the results were quite surprising, but at least it's relatively uniform.

    Actually this isn't their entry level braid according to Varivas. There was a discussion on one of my other video where Varivas stated: "The marketing words 'Standard' and 'Premium' are a bit misleading. By 'Standard' VARIVAS means they are setting a new standard of premium line. The English word 'standard' is a bit awkward here, cuz it can be miscontrued as average or basic. But what VARIVAS is trying to say is that they have raised the bar and elevated their standard, base model line."

    @@thelinelaboratory Could be, as far as I knew this was a new version of their older VARIVAS High Grade X8 (but i know there is a Type ii but not sure what’s the difference)… Still, this braid for the price, is still within the budgets of many and even for those just starting out, making it maybe a bit more ‘entry’ level in that sense? :))

My home lakes are Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn and I've caught some big largemouth on both including 1 that was almost 11lbs on Lake Fork on the 12lb AMZ braid and Sunline Sniper leader. It's some really smooth and tough braid with a pretty small diameter braid so far I've been thoroughly impressed with it. I'm definitely a FG knot guy but I like the SC as well... I'm assuming the PR knot is basically the SC knot from what I can tell??? I can tie the SC faster then the FG so when I'm rigging up before I go fishing I tie the FG but if I have to tie up a new leader on the water I normally tie the SC... Pretty cool video man I like that you're using equipment that is more consistent then other methods I've saw on KZread.

  • @elbaito
    @elbaito8 күн бұрын

    @bringit3164 I've just seen a lot of videos and experienced bass anglers suggest using around that. I assumed you want the line diameters to be relatively close?

  • @thelinelaboratory
    @thelinelaboratory7 күн бұрын

    @@elbaito I would like to understand the reasons for this. To me it doesn't make sense (at least the way i fish). For me the main purpose of the leader is for abrasion resistance (and invisibility), so you choose a diameter based on that. Having a leader weaker than the braid seems backwards. You weakest point is now the leader, so why cast a braid that is way stronger than it needs to be? That's assuming your not using a thicker braid for abrasion resistance or something like that. I need to do some research on the reasons as there must be something i am missing.

  • @elbaito
    @elbaito7 күн бұрын

    @thelinelaboratory by far the main reason I use a leader is invisibility, and I think the idea is if you are going to break off somewhere the best spot for that is the leader so you lose the least amount of line. So you use a leader in the strength you are looking for, and working backwards use braid that is a bit stronger. That'd my understanding at least, I could be wrong.

  • @bringit3164
    @bringit31647 күн бұрын

    @@elbaito I would suggest getting your fluro leader from Japan then and I don't mean made in Japan for USA market. The dia will be be lower than what you fine here. Far as slow pitch jigging you wouldn't want your leader to be weaker than the braid. For example if I'm using PE2 braid which will break at 15.5kg (35lb) then I'll be using 42lb or 49lb fluro leader. I'll set my drag on my reel at 4.5kg. That's based on my braid. You would have to set your drag on your leader line since its weaker than your braid.

It measured .007 thou, but a couple of metres further down it measured only .005 thou. 😮 I've never noticed that much inconsistency in a line before. Talk about irritating. No wonder I was able to cast those heavy sinkers without bust offs.
