I got to say he had to be a little nervous sitting behind an engine.. after all it's because of an engine blowing and mutilating him decades ago he designed the rear engine dragster. I wouldn't want to sit behind that fire breathing piston jamming bomb 😮

Never gets old eatching this....pity modern nostalgia top fuel and the deep pocket guys ruined it. Started out in the 90's pretty much as what you see hear accept with few saftey changes.....hell they were even wearing breather masks then and running small period correct canard wings and being true to the era.....

Whoever was the first person to say, "I think a 40's Fiat would make an awesome drag car," should be in the hall of fame. Probably got some strange looks from friends at first. Look them up in image.

I saw my first drag race when I was 10 yrs old , at the 1964 Winternationals in Pomona , and right then and there I was hooked ! Later in high school you could go to Lions and see a 36 car top fuel show . This is when 3 guys could team together and build a fuel dragster for $ 10k . Now days it costs in excess of $ 15 million to run one for one season and they are hard pressed to put half a dozen cars together in a show. I'm now seeing a rebirth of the AA/GS class because the little guys can still afford to build and race them .May their tribe increase . 😎👍

Hello Don' It's Pete in UK. Thank you sir, that was magnificent. I had the immense pleasure and privilege of meeting you in 1964, at the 1st International Drag Festival. I think it was this car I saw you with too. My mother had not long died but you and your fine competitors gave me compassion and encouragement that kept me alive. I genuinely believe that. God bless you.

You talk about the "lack of personality" then cite an example of "personality" and immediately poo-poo it. Also gotta' lose the "he he he, can't talk about that' schick too.

Come on man, you weren't aware of "divisional rivalries"? 🙄 Sometimes you've got to lose the "faux naive exuberance" for Christ's sake. I love this channel and what you bring for the history of drag racing, but we're only a few years apart(b;1960) and you're like; "wow I never knew that". Maybe it's a "Midwest thing". Either way, keep it coming.👍🏁🏁

Ok, so the Dick LaHaie sequence you show are my photos - they were published in the Nov 1996 Hot Rod magazine. More on that in a little bit. At the 1977 Winternationals in Pomona, Leslie Lovett (head photographer at the NHRA) walked up to me and said something to the effect of “well, not sure if you are going to like this, but your LaHaie sequence was the final factor that led the NHRA to ban the wheel pants on dragsters. Dang it, I really loved those things…”. I looked at Les and said something unprintable, because I, too, loved cars that had them. BTW, add Bob Beaulieu’s Eastern Raider AA/FD and Ron Zavarella’s A/ED (yup, an Econo Dragster!) to the list of wheel-panted cars. BTW2 - a recent online comment by Bill Dee stated that it took the Eastern Raider guys a little fiddling to get the wheel pants to track well on the AA/ FD. Thus, there must have been a “bad setup” for them as well as a “good setup”. Back to LaHaie - 1) yes, there was a stiff right-to-left crosswind at Indy that day. The tower side stands at Indy did not go all the way to the finish line, ending right at about the 800 - 900 foot mark. Thus, the cars on track encountered the crosswind right as they got to the lights. 2) at Gainesville in ‘76, Dick had a bad crash and messed up his arm and hand. He returned to driving that summer at Englishtown, but his arm was still VERY weak, One of the photogs saw him have to use his off-hand to open the door of the pickup truck because the other hand could not pull the door latch. 3) you neglected to show my FIRST photo of LaHaie and Murphy getting to the finish line. Both of Dick’s slicks are fine - no abnormal distortion. 4) When Dick went to pull the chute lever, he had to use his GOOD hand to move it, keeping his WEAK hand on the steering wheel. 5) right at that time, the crosswind hit the front wheels, wrenching control from Dick. The wheels flopped over HARD to the right - what I for years thought was dust coming off the tires I now realize is actually the super-compressed air going over the top of the wheel pant and condensing into a plume like what you see flowing over an airliner wing when you are taking off on a hot, humid day. 6) at 232 mph, there is no way that Dick could have reacted that quickly to a blown tire (also - definitely not shredding in the upside-down shot) and certainly he would not have reacted that violently - he was a great driver. 7) IF the right rear slick had in fact blown, the car would have pulled RIGHT, and Dick’s counter steering would have been to go LEFT to compensate. Unfortunately, even though most wheel-panted cars encountered no handling issues, I have to go with the NHRA’s conclusion. Darn it…..

YES ! I was a spectator at my local drag strip, 1962 my 1st time watching all "hot" cars at the big end ,as it was called, bc they came from there being pushed down the track towards the starting line, it was standard procedure at that time. Not slow like on here, but 35/40 mph to get there quick, no long smoky burn outs either, had to be behind starting line.
