    So late to the comment party here, but I remember getting this game for my 10th birthday and playing it with my friends. We also played the spin-off, Girl Talk Date Line, which came with a device that you hooked up to a tape player to listen to recordings of teen conversations. Would the call end in a date to the prom or a rejection-triggered shame spiral? Could go either way! My favorite of the '80s "teen" games, though, is Heartthrob. So stupid. So silly. Highly recommend with drinks.

    So much fun, Cole! The three models in the makeup section represent women in their 20s, 30s and 40s-- I had (have, somewhere) this book in paperback, and know it well. I practiced every technique. Gads, the makeup still looks great. There weren't a lot of makeup manuals available to non-beauty pros then, and this one wasn't bad.

  • @ColeChickering

    I agree, they all look fantastic even by today's standards! It's a fabulous book. Seems like a lot of makeup manuals from this era and earlier were not as invested in presenting full color large scale images, but Avon always delivers with their photography.

    I still have that Sunsparklers glitter blush (yes, a highlighter!) and a loose eyeshadow from the line, plus an eye duo from one of the earlier pages. I was a rep in 1986 and had repped earlier for years too, and your observations are right on and hilariously expressed. Avon's catalogs were so lovely then.

    Hi Cole! I loved this 70’s catalog! Back in the day those cologne decanters were all the rage! Remember my bff bought me a Sweet Honesty cologne decanter in the shape of a candle, I loved it! They made great little gifts! That blue goblet with George Washington on it- I have one in my china cabinet and I have no idea where I got it! It had a sticker on it “An exclusive Avon design produced by Fostoria”. It’s quite heavy like the red Cape Cod pieces. Maybe that’s why I got it? The Clearskin line was a HUGE moneymaker for me, I wish they’d bring it back, it was a whole system of skincare for acne-prone and oily skin and it was excellent. My own kids used it and so did my nieces. They only discontinued it a few years ago. Thank you for sharing, this was a good one!

    All so interesting! You are an excellent historian on the past and present of Avon, I always appreciate your comments. PS: I went to a humongous thrift store in Michigan about a month ago and they had whole section absolutely packed to the gills with red glass Cape Cod Avon pieces! It was astonishing, I've never seen so much all in one place.

    Why the hell did you skip right over the Sweet Honesty stuff? Those are the ONLY pages I wanted to see (having been 13 in 1975). People remember it as a fragrance, which they still make, but at the time that was also their teenage makeup line and few people remember it. The eyeshadow and blush came in tubes, which was very unusual at the time. It rarely even shows up on eBay. Seriously. Why? (Oh, and yes, single eye shadows were The Thing then)

    I think that the Imperial perfume is meant to be Chinese (the bridge design is Chinese) though with it being the 70's who knows! That said, I did spot a fragrance that seems like it may be Japanese inspired - Hana Gasa in the perfumed powder section may very well have a Japanese name, which is a kind of traditional Japanese hat decorated with flowers (usually mums).

  • @ColeChickering
    @ColeChickering11 күн бұрын

    Ah, interesting! “Imperial” does have kind of a Chinese-American restaurant name sound to it. I suppose they are probably pulling from a mishmash of inspirations.

    Back then, they applied just one eyeshadow colour. Makeup has changed so much since then. I'm flabergasted by the price of things. That ring with the blue stone that was 9$, that would be 50$ in today's money! Who the heck is paying 50$ for cheap costume jewelry!

    Love this! Mom collected all the decanters! Half of my teen years were spent wearing aftershave 😂 as a result. I still have a complete chess set, all intact in boxes. I loved Mineral Springs. Eye shadow singles are even more popular today, by the way, especially indie brands. My mom loved blue, and we thought those bicentennial candle holder/goblets were so fancy! Thanks for more trips down memory lane. 😊

    Thanks for sharing this catalog from 1976, it brings back memories for me. As for the picture that you questioned, if it was Brooke Shields. Well, I truly think it was her. She was born in May 1965. The picture was probably taken within the year before 75/76. Avon catalogs were designed months in advance. I know, I used to sell Avon back in the day. It's nice to see all the older fragrances, that are no longer around. The ones I loved & I now miss is Charisma & Moonwind. i still order Avon, but not too fond of the newer fragrances. Maybe one of these days, they'll bring back some of the former fragrances.

  • @ColeChickering
    @ColeChickering13 күн бұрын

    Thank you for confirming, I am 95% sure it is indeed Brooke. You are right, her age lines up correctly with the publication date! The scent Moonwind in particular has me intrigued, the hauntingly dramatic imagery they chose for that one is quite standout in the catalog's lineup. 🌙
