To me, the blues is the most beautiful American musical artform. In over 100+ years, the blues has done more to shape modern music than any other genre. It is both a living museum and an ever-evolving music that tells stories more deeply and personally than any other.

Just followed you after Rachel's Ghost's recommendations. Good stuff
Hi Aggie. Thanks a lot... much appreciated. Have a good one.
thanks
My pleasure... thanks to you as well. Have a great Canada Day.
wow great collection of howlin wolf albums, i remember reading an articale many years ago that stuck with me that his voice is like whiskey soaked broken glass being dragged over hot ashphalt, spot on love that voice, my albums are on cd, a sun records comp, a two for of howlin wolf and moanin in the moonlight, two best of chess records and a two cd deluxe edition of the london sessions, i need to keep an eye out for some vinyl, stunning collection mate, cheers chris
Thanks a lot Stephen. Sounds like you have a pretty epic Wolf collection as well. I like that description of his voice... I agree; spot on. Sam Phillips said that Howlin' Wolf was the best singer he ever heard... pretty high praise. Have a good one.
I definitely need more Wolf in my collection. Considering he’s my favorite I’m really short on his albums, only have 5 and a couple are second rate represses. Lucky enough to have seen the great man at the 1970 Ann Arbor Blues Festival. Great video and information.
Hi Jonathan. One can never have too much Wolf in the collection. I'm still missing so many LP's on vinyl... 4 or 5 I think. It never ends, does it? Have a great week.
@@BluesGuyVinyl - It’s never ending. Even though I’m going to be 75 next month, I’m still buying and trying to fill holes in my collection.
Excellent collection and great info, Chris. I first heard Howlin' Wolf on a CD called '20 R&B Classics that Inspired The Rolling Stones' (or something like that), which I picked up for about two pounds in 1993. It had Little Red Rooster and Smokestack Lightning on it. I have a couple of good CD comps but alas nothing on vinyl as yet. I remember reading that he was a great reader and scholar (he looked that way with those glasses!), and often used to be seen reading books away from the bandstand. Btw, one of my biggest musical regrets is not going to see Hubert Sumlin when he came to play at a small pub in Leeds in about 2001. Can't believe I missed that.
Thank you very much James. My Dad is a Wolf fan, so I remember hearing his records as a kid... his voice frightened me back then. I didn't really start buying his albums for myself until I was in my late teens... mostly cassettes at that point. I wish I had the opportunity to see The Wolf live before he passed. Seeing Hubert would have been outstanding as well! Have a great weekend.
Wow Impressive I just download a Best Of on Pirate Bay - 3 Cd's should be enough to get a taste
Hi John. There's so much of his material out there... I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Thanks and take care.
Love those Cadet pressings. You delivered some info galore. Appreciated all of it. Super collection Chris~ Rob/Boston
Hi Rob. Thank a lot. Good to hear that you found it interesting. Have a good one.
That is a lot of Howlin Wolf. I have 4 albums by him, one which you didn’t show.
Hey Rich. Hmmm... which one might that be?
Hello Chris; Like the hat & t-shirt appropriate for the video. We own many LP's by the Wolf including the book. Great artist who wrote many classic blues numbers. Good video informative & well explained. Take care, Tina & Pat!!~
Hi T&P!! Thank you very much. I'm glad you found it informative. Take care.
Fun to see this. I have 5 of his albums.
Thanks a lot Richard. I know he's a favorite for many. Have a great week.
What a great video. It is outstanding to get a peak at your collection artist by artist. Keep doing these nephew, pretty awesome stuff
Thanks Unk. I have a Son House video coming soon. Have a good one.
Hi Chris!!! awesome Howlin' collection, t-shirt also and learn a little more about his life... cheers and be well
Hi Cristian. Thanks a lot. He's my favorite, so I have a lot of his stuff. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.
A great informative tribute there mate…you have a beautiful Wolf collection. Thanks Chris 👍
G'day Harry. Thanks a lot. He sure was one-in-a-million. Have a great week.
It was great seeing 78's from your collection. You don't see many people in the VC talking about shellac records. The only blues artists that I have on 78 are Lowell Fulson and Amos Milburn who was more jump blues. My Lowell Fulson is "Sinner's Prayer" on Swing Time. Those are some nice Sonny Boy Williamson records. Did you ever hear Randy Newman's song about Sonny Boy Williamson I. I'm jealous of your collection. Keep the 78's coming.
Hi Randy. Thanks a lot. I like Lowell Fulson... very smooth. Never heard that Randy Newman track. I'll have to look it up. Have a good one.
Hey I don't know if you remember me I love when you play music and live stream I hope you're doing well 😁
Hey Jeremy. Yes, I haven't done a live stream in a long time. KZread makes it much more difficult to play music on a live stream now. Other than that, all is well. Thanks and have a good week.
@@BluesGuyVinyl I understand have a good day 😁
That's a cool stack of records. I was glad to see Dinah Washington sneak in towards the end. I've seen 45s that had two different artists (one on each side) but I didn't know they did that with 78s too. Makes sense I guess. Thanks for showing the records BluesGuy!
Thanks Randy. I know I was gonna get some Dinah in there... love her stuff.
Looks like you did fine. I was out of the country, vacationing in Spain, so didn’t get a chance to go. Oh well, there’s always another RSD to look forward to.
I did OK, but missed a lot too. Still can't find the Howlin' Wolf Live or the Earl Hooker. I think I would rather vacation in Spain than go to a record store day. LOL! Thanks. Cheers!
Some great stuff there. 78’s are a rabbit hole I’ve never gone down. Do you have an old wind up player so you can listen ? I would love to see your Western Swing collection. Thanks for sharing !
Hi Jonathan. Yes, it's a deep rabbit hole that I had to get out of... gets too pricey. I do have a separate turntable to play these on. Also, I have another that can record these onto a digital file for my phone and desktop for listening. I'll probably get the western swing video up in the next couple of weeks. Thanks a lot.
Hi Chris!!! so cool to see those nice 78 rpm records from your collection, all in great conditions, not like the ones you normally see going through thrift store..... Btw you have them as collectors items or you play them?? Don't know if many stereos have 78 speed. cheers and be well
Hi Cristian. I have a separate turntable to play 78's on... I don't play them often, but sometimes I do. I also have a turntable that records analog to digital so I can have the songs on my computer and/or phone to listen to. Thanks bud.
man theres some sweet blues on 78 there, they are all to cool, that frank hutchinson 78 thats nice man, cool early b b king love 3 o clock blues, little walter classic and louis jordan, yes please more 78s would be good, finally got that collection 60 plus 78s, 40 plus 45s and LPs, 78s a lot of R n R 9 elvis, 6 buddy holly, 2 little richard everly brothers lonnie donigan and johnny otis show and a load more, not much blues sugar chile robinson and larry williams and some soul stuff, the champs love them, LPs mostly junk, but a few good ones, the johnny otis show album first press and clarence clemons, some jazz, 45s more R n R and a nice chuck berry on chess with the sleeve and a roy brown, having fun digging through it all, cheers chris cool video
Wow Stephen! Those are some incredible records! I love the Everly Bros and Little Richard but have never seen any 78's of theirs here. Roy Brown is awesome too. Sounds like a great score! Thanks. Cheers!
Hello Chris 👋! Great video, and congratulations on your 5 year KZread anniversary 😀! I like that Pete Seger, Willie Dixon, and Memphis Slimm album condition! I had found that very same album. The vinyl is VG, and it has the book, but the cover of mine is warped (not the album, though 😅!) It's been so long since I've listened to it, and you've inspired me to dig it out and listen to it again. What do you think of it? Did you listen to it yet? In a historical sense, it was very surprising to find out all of them actually came together and recorded it.
After I got it home I cleaned it and gave it a listen. Sounds very good... I like it. I tend to prefer the bluesier songs rather than the folkier stuff, but it's all good stuff. Thanks a lot.
Lol it was definitely a great movie .
I love this movie and still watch it often. Thanks Jedediah.
Chris.........Sure don't see 78 rpm like those you got. Most of the time they're swing stuff and Reader's Digest big band orchestral etc. Are you able to play them. Does your turntable have 78 speed? Good scores.
Thanks Derwyn. Some of these have some minor scratches, but that's to be expected... nothing too terrible though. I have an additional old turntable that plays 78's.
Hello Chris; Some very nice showings of Blues artists on 78 rpm records. Hopefully you did not take too much of a shellac-ing, (ouch) when purchasing these recordings. The Bluebird sides are Sonny Boy #1. Bluebird was an original RCA subsidiary, hence Nipper the RCA dog on the label. Sonny Boy #2 started his career on Trumpet records, pre Chess. Good old timey Blues video, informative. Tina & Pat!~
Hi T&P!! Most I purchased at garage/yard sales so I didn't pay too much. A few I bought at auction... the Frank Hutchison was pricey ($50), other than that, most were around $5-$10. Cheers!
Chris. We all should have diversified tastes in music. There are such great bands and artists that are out there both past and present. While my collection is heavily filled with jazz and blues. I also have many LP’s from The Band, Grateful Dead, NRBQ, Jefferson Airplane, Delaney & Bonnie, James Brown, The Byrds, Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan Waylon Jennings. The list goes on. And looking back each one of these has several shots of blues in them.
Hi Richard. I agree that a wide musical spectrum is essential. No sense being closed-minded to variety. As for having 'several shots of blues in them', I believe Willie Dixon said it best when he stated: "The blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits." Thanks and have a great week.
Did Norman Whitefield produce Rare Earth?
Yes, he produced the first one... all others indicated 'produced by Rare Earth.' Cheers!
Hi Chris!!! and congrats on 5+ years in the VC... You're right Rare Earth is and odd band to be in Motown records, but they are a cool band. That DK album is kind of a surprise, but a good one. cheers and be well. you don't see a lot of April Wine albums dowm here another cool and underrated band. cheers and be well
Hi Cristian. Yeah, I bet a lot are surprised at my DK albums. LOL! I guess April Wine is pretty rare all the way down there. They are a Canadian band, so I'm not sure if they ever toured in South America. Thanks and have a good weekend.
Nice video Chris - always had you down as a man of diverse tastes music wise so no real surprise! If you were to take a casual look at my own collection you would probably put me down as a Jazz fan ( which I am ) but if you take the time to look closer then you will find Blues , Classic Rock , Classical, Afro beat , krautrock and Prog in there to ! 👍
Hi Tim. I guess that's the mark of a true music lover, a wide range of tastes and styles. Thanks a lot. I hope you have a good weekend.
great video chris, i think having a broad taste in music is so cool im the same love not only the blues but metal/glam, country, crooners, jazz a bit, 60s jangle pop, surf/drag/instro big time and rock n roll/rockabilly/psychobilly and 80s pop rock, some great choices man the scarecrow and all JCM albums awesome, rare earth and aptil wine hard to find over here but have got one rare earth and its great, that leon redbone album with michigan j frog on it made me smile so cool, as for brian setzer love, have all his albums on cd man the big band stuff wow, cheers chris
Hi Stephen. I'll bet our music collections are very similar. Good taste is good taste. LOL! Rare Earth is hard to find here too, so when I see it, I grab it! Have a great weekend.
@@BluesGuyVinyl record fair in the morning so should be fun and you have a good one
Leon is one of my favorites.
Me too Richard. Such a unique and talented artist. Thanks and have a great weekend.
Aloha Chris BluesGuys Vinyl. I really enjoy your knowledge in your Blues Segments of sharing your new Blues finds. Love seeing your other music interest too.... Rare Earth is always one of my go to bands to listen too also. I even have Rare earth on 8-track tapes, which makes it so easy to pop in a player when I doing other things around the house, you can't get more Analog than an 8-track tape. Lol Really enjoyed this video of you sharing your diverse interest in other genres. Looking forward to watching your next video. Mahalo Ed
Thanks a lot Ed. I agree that rare Earth are so good, you can listen to them anytime, any mood you're in. 8 track, eh? Wow! Haven't seen those in awhile. Take care and have a good one.
Nephew, you are a man of mystery. I do need more Rare Earth, they don’t cost much but they are usually beat up. I never got into Stray Cats, the whole rockabilly scene kind of passed me by. April Wine, you hair metal dude! Most enjoyable to get a peak the secret side of your collection.
Thanks Uncle Steve. Rare Earth are so good, a favorite of mine for whatever mood you're in. Thanks and have a good weekend.
Nice Rare Earth stuff!
Thanks a lot Roger. Have a good one.
Hi Chris. Great albums by great artists. I am mostly a blues gue like you, but I do like a lot of other things, as you do. I have a number of Rare Earth, Leon Redbone, StrayCats/Setzer and April Wine albums. I never got into punk so have, never liked it. April Wine albums are difficult to find here in Australia. Most people have no idea who they are, but I still always keep an eye out. Maybe a trip to Canada might e on the cards.
Thanks Peter. Yeah, you gotta have a wide range of musical tastes. I like punk, but in smaller doses than other genres... country music too. Have a great weekend.
Hello Chris; Rare Earth, the early studio LP's on the Rare Earth label & the live LP. Leon Redbone, old time songs & sound. Stray Cats rockabilly rebels. April Wine, long time rockers. Good vinyl picks. Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Hi T&P!! Thanks a lot. Have a great weekend.
I saw Rare Earth a few times in Bakersfield in the early 70’s. I remember the drummer was the singer. Dead Kennedys were great live though sometimes Jello would talk too much.
Yeah, he can ramble on a bit. It's a fine line between chatting up the crowd and shut the f*ck up I guess. Thanks Rich.
I have that Climax Blues Band, and nice pick up on on your 1963 Blues comp ! Interesting Pete Seeger, Id buy it as well with Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon.. Cool ! Lonesome Dave Peverett takes over on all vocals after Chris Youlden jumped ship to try going solo. Good to see you, Chris !
Hi Jt. Yes, I was pretty surprised to see the Pete Seeger w/Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim. Needless to say, I HAD to grab that ASAP. Thanks and have a good one. Cheers!
I love my Willie Dixon albums, I have a cassette in the garage when I'm doing yardwork.. Good listen ! ( I Am The Blues ) 🎵
@@jtsrecordroom3963 That's a classic!
Yesssir ! Whoo hoo 🎵
Great Savoy Brown album… what a cool cover. Lovely Ray Charles LP too! Liked and subbed. Cheers, Jack
Hey Jack. Very iconic album cover on the Savoy Brown LP... can spot it a mile away. Ray Charles is tops in my book and this album is no exception. Thanks a lot... much appreciated. Cheers!
Congratulations on finding the RSD late arrival. That tour sounds like it was incredible. The Pete Seeger record really looks awesome. So cool that you found the original 1960 album. I love the Parrot label. Ray Charles! Each one of those records looks like it's really worth spending some time with. Have fun listening Chris!
Hi Randy. Yeah, I really lucked out with this score. The Ray Charles is an outstanding album. Thanks and have a great weekend.
Hi Chris!!! great update and killer additions to the collection..... a glad to see you got one of your A-list RSD releases you were looking after, hope you get the other ones soon and for a fair price!!! I have seeing that Savoy Brown albums a couple of times here in the VC and always enjoyed the artwork!!! however i have not heard it yet and also not very familiar with the bands catalogue.... maybe it's time to fix that. cheers and be well
Hi Cristian. Thanks a lot bud. The Savoy Brown album is great, and you can't miss that excellent cover art on the jacket. They are pretty bluesy, but have some nice rock and roll elements to their songs too... great band. Have a good one. Cheers!
Really digging the looks of that American Blues Festival from 1963 Chris. Where did you hear about that one? Also. Did they release any other years or Blues festivals? Love the fresh cracking sound that the gatefold jacket makes the first time you crack it open. I never knew that Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon played on a Pete Seeger album. Interesting. You never and I mean never disappoint Chris. Cool grabs~ Rob/Boston
Hi Rob. I heard about the '63 Blues Fest album on the RSD list from the official website. I think a lot of the blues festival shows in Europe were released in the late 60's and early 70's, I have just never really seen them. That Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon was just recently re-issued, I think... good record. Thanks a lot and have a great weekend. Cheers!
Hi Chiris. Very nice blues based RSD find. Didn't see that album anywhere. Also can't go wrong with Savoy Brown. John Lee Hooker in Montreal...amazing. CREASE BREAK with Ray Charles. A great album.
Thanks Jamie. I knew this album was out there, but the 2 stores I visited on RSD didn't have it so this was cool to find after the fact. Lucky with savoy Brown lately, and what can I say about the Ray Charles and JLH albums? Outstanding! Have a good one.
I never really got into the Climax Blues Band as their one hit did not seem to be the blues. Were their earlier albums more blues oriented? I picked up another RSD album yesterday, a store still had a nice selection to choose from. Always good to see you nephew
Hi Uncle Steve. Yes, their earlier stuff is much more bluesy... but stills leans slightly into blues-rock territory. Good to hear that there are still some RSD albums out there. Hopefully I can scoop up The Howlin' Wolf Live and the Yardbirds B-sides release... fingers crossed! Have a good one.
Hello Chris; Like the Standing at the Crossroads T-shirt. The 1963 Blues Festival is a good listen, we have the DVD box set. Climax Blues Band their 2nd LP during the blues years. Savoy Brown, a blues gem. With John Lee you can't lose. Ray Charles in a Jazz mood. Good finds. Stay warm.Take care, Tina & Pat!~
Hi T&P!! Yeah, the t-shirt is cool... a favourite of mine. I was very pleased to get the '63 Blues Fest... I hope the Howlin' Wolf Live shows up as well. The rest are all gravy... very happy to find them. Thanks and have a good weekend.
Ray Charles is always worth picking up. I'm glad that you were able to find the RSD title you wanted. I don't have any Savoy Brown in the collection and I'm not sure why. Happy listening.
Hey Randy. Thanks a lot. Love Brother Ray. Savoy Brown is fairly new to me, but I've had some luck finding their albums in the past few months. Hard to find though, in general. Have a good one!
wow some cool pick ups, that blues festival album is pretty sweet, love that savoy brown album and the cover is so good, JLH black night is falling i have on CD from 2004 on just in time records, says in the liner notes that it is a series from this label from the 200 seat club, also have the ray charles album on CD would love all these albums on vinyl, cheers cool stuff chris
Thanks Stephen. The Savoy Brown album is excellent... I dig those dudes. Imagine seeing JLH in a club that only seats 200 people? Amazing! Have a good one. Cheers!
Great find with the Hip, Chris - that sold out pretty fast in my region. Hopefully the Howl'n Wolf and other albums on your want list show up later. - Joel
Hey Joel. Thanks a lot. Yeah, hopefully that Howlin' Wolf surfaces... that would be terrific. Hope all is well. Cheers!
Lines were even nuts in small town America Chris. Glad you found some items. That Hoodoo album did look good.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, Uncle Steve. At any rate, I did pretty well. Thanks and take it easy out there. Cheers!
Hi Chris!! Well it wasn't a bad RSD after all..... and no way i would spend hours standing in line to get into a record store and on a saturday morning!!! Let's hope you can get the albums you're looking for and for a fair price too. cheers and be well
Hey Cristian. I wouldn't spend hours in line either... it seems crazy to me. I did pretty well even though most of my top picks were unavailable or already sold out. Later in the week, I'll check again... who knows what I might find? Have a great week bud. Cheers!
Onya Chris. Another down to earth realistic reflection on overrated RSD (dare I say it). It is starting to catch on in Australia but mostly in the cities. Regional areas- well, most people will walk away from a crowd queue and the frenzy this creates. Some of those titles listed are nothing special which detracts as well. The search online or elsewhere second hand continues for titles that I really want. RSD should be an everyday thing…
Thanks Bruce. I too will walk right pass a store on RSD if there's a massive queue. Luckily one store had no line-up and the other I know the owner so he just let me in. For me, RSD is more about finding new or previously unreleased albums. I don't get caught up in the hype because, as you mentioned, a lot of the releases are nothing special. Cheers!
