"The point to all this..." 🤣 nice. I'm a big fan of Leatherman multi tools. Mora stuff always seems to be great value too.
Love this guy. And The Kindness of Strangers is a book I would read. Travel biographies are a favorite genre.
Inspiring guy!
I am just halfway through your book ("MOODS OF FUTURE JOYS") when I realized that I had no idea how old you are and if you're still among us on this planet :-D I decided to look you up and had a small glimpse of hope to see an interview of sorts with you, to know your voice. I like to read books with my inner voice sounding like the authors actual voice. I was delighted to see that only 19 hours ago you most recently uploaded a video. This video - which I will enjoy during lunch break now. Fantastic book by the way, I can hardly put it away.
Haha! My beard is somewhat greyer than when I cycled across the desert in Sudan...
@@al_humphreys haha :D I just saw your reply - and it fit perfectly, just minutes ago I showed my fiance your quote about the people in Sudan (which I highlighted, because it was so touching). Meanwhile, I am already done with book one and are now right in the middle of "Thunder and Sunshine". I am not sure you know Martijn Doolards bike journey? I am sure you'd absolutely love it. Greetings from Austria - I'll keep up with your channel from now on 💚
Right on Alastair, thank you from Aotearoa NZ 😊 My weekend tramp just got canned, but it's winter solstice on Friday, so I'm keeping my dog care booking and my extra day's annual leave Monday, and I'll go do some local adventures including a wild brew somewhere lovely!
Vote Green! Unless in a marginal Tory seat I suppose...
I’m watching this while wild camping in the woods!
You win! That's great!
hi (from Denmark) Alastair, I'm on the same journey as you with changing habits around food, travel, environment/climate, animal welfare etc. etc. and i recognize the dilemmas and challenges. Thank you for the cookbook reference - it's one of my main challenges moving to a meat/dairy free diet - how to cook interesting food! And praise also for your attention to not vegan ranting :-D cheers, Martin
Have a great weekend Alastair 👍Good answers. I’ve got a D of E group who got inspired by watching some of your vids and hearing about micro adventures….
These guys need to talk to Elon about going to Mars.
Your micro adventures will be a thing of legend one day .
I like sizzling king prawn McCoys 😋 But it’s not mine.
Great ramble! But beware of dropping organic litter too. Only take photos (or about to go viral videos) and leave footprints whilst out and about. My personal dislike is the ubiquitous orange peel by paths. Not a fruit indigenous to the the UK - as yet - but with climate change fast advancing who knows for the future!!
Picking up litter is more important than people think.
Totally agree. But at least we can take action, and make a difference to the area/world you live in. And maybe someone who drops litter will see you picking it up and decide to join you, or at least think twice next time they buy roast king prawn flavour crisps(ewww btw) and decide this time to bin them! 😊👍🏼
Really enjoying seeing your increased videos on KZread your a natural fit for it
Agreed with you! Ps: your hair wants cutting.
Haha! I totally agree! I look ridiculous! A bit like He-Man?
Good ramble! Even organic waste is not acceptable as one should take nothing but photographs (or soon to go viral videos) and leave nothing but footprints on walks. My personal dislike is the ubiquitous orange peel I find by paths which although a healthier food choice is still not natural to our environment here in the not so sunny UK - though with climate change fast advancing - who knows....
Out of interest, which river was that?
Good morning, Al! I'm grateful for your presence in the world.
What a great little video. Well done Alastair
Very interesting take, as usual!
So glad the YT gods finally showed me this! Fantastic concept of micro adventures
I love this, I'm surrounded by waterways and constantly told by the locals that the water is 'massively polluted' and 'toxic' because of the historic industry that surrounds this town, it certainly doesn't always look that inviting, but it never occurred to me to actually test it myself!? 😃 i still wouldn't drink it though 😆
Would you like me to send you my testing kit so that you can check out your own river?
@@al_humphreys that would be awesome!
cracking!
Fabulous insightful, funny and informative book. I finished reading this earlier this week, after a recommendation from a friend. It coincided with a family move to a new area, so one of the first things I did was order a 1:25000 map with our house in the centre and have been starting to explore. Not a grid at a time yet, but just connecting with the area. thoroughly recommend it myself and am about to have my first micro-adventrue next week 😀
Thank you!
Nice concept and exercise. Cymraeg ydy'r iaith @7:35 (Welsh is the language @07:35), it seems a bit distorted by ChatGPT - but possibly says "Of course, I could write the results". Although, I'd be wary of just testing pH, temp, phosphate and nitrates to decide whether a watercourse is drinkable in all places. Doesn't consider organic pollutants (herbicide, insecticides) and faecal bacteria. I appreciate there is also a judgement (e.g. I'll sometimes drink from upland streams) and what might be perfectly fine for swimming may not be so good for drinking. I'm also curious about that open pipe at @8:40 - it may just be a decommissioned 'pipe bridge' over the watercourse but I wonder if it is there for a pump connection for water abstraction/agricultural irrigation (this is speculation - I've no idea). As a canoeist I also see so much 'infrastructure' that has just been left to decay rather than responsibly removed. I do love your curiosity and approach with local exploration. There's so much we don't see/aren't aware of that's hidden behind unnecessary fences. Fideo neis, diolch yn fawr (Nice video, thanks very much).
Thank you - I totally agree that my methods were somewhat simplistic! Diolch
Fantastic. I’m inspired to do it. Thank you x
Nice vid
Awesome. My neck of the woods is populated by cattle grazing on grassland. Beautiful and woodsy too, but the cattle bring wee beasties that can give you the screaming s...s, unfortunately. So it's water from home when I go out. Cattle are also conveyors of ticks, and their own contribution to potential misery. So, for me, my countryside adventures are on gravel roads on a bicycle. Another way for me to get away from the city, and be surrounded by nature. Thanks for your video. I embrace the micro adventure ethic as well, thanks to your mountain bikes and bothy nights video!
Cheers!!
Excellent video!
I hope your pursuit of drinkable river water led to no ill effects worse than wet trainers. Nice idea and great video Al.
Brilliant stuff Al - and I love my mention!!! SB
❤
I remember watching Steve Backshall on TV
Wonderful. 🙂
Love hearing your spin of your ideas.
That trig point at around 10 mins looked remarkably like Holly Hill in Kent. Mainly from where the table was positioned by the viewpoint. Great fun video. I’ve been bagging a few trig points in my localish area in Kent.
Good points, mate. Happy journey!
Jesus is the wiser one.
6years on!
Did you see anything out of the ordinary in the desert? I mean, spiritual or supernatural feel to it? At night etc
Thank you for sharing your story, Alastair!
I certainly found the book very inspirational. It encouraged me to go out one day on a local walk I had done lots of times before but this time a chap pointed out a kingfisher to me and I watched it though my scope for 15 mins fishing, also saw lapwings and a seal in river that day and if I had not been reading your book I perhaps would not bothered going out that day.
Thank you, Jean!
Its a wonderful book.
Avoid the poo
My great aunt ❤️
What a great lady!
Criminal - nationalise the water companies!
Is it just me or is anyone else hearing some noises in the background?
Very wise words. I remember from your book how hard it was just to take that time out.
It’s always a score draw at best with brambles
Having just finished your book, it's good for me to go back to the start as well 🙂
ha ha your nuts mate :) lol job well done, well done indeed old boy :)
