    Dear Craig, THANK YOU so much for your very informative video. You touched on so many things that I too have been going through with my own hearing. I was so relieved to learn about what the kind professor explained in his letter to you about the distortion. I've been experiencing distortion ever since my return from a recent flight a little over 2 months ago and still no full relief with the distortion with some higher-pitched sounds. My question to you is related to what the professor explained about the brain readjusting the sounds: does that mean I have to re-train my brain to listen to sounds or music that I'm very familiar with, to allow my brain to readjust to those sounds again? For example, if I listen to a favorite Beatles song I know well, certain sounds now in the song are distorted, and that makes me sad. Do I listen and re-listen to these favorites to retrain my brain? Is that what the professor meant ? Or do I just continue to be patient and allow my brain to readjust naturally? Hope this makes sense? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you so much for all your help!!!

  • @Songwriter74
    @Songwriter742 ай бұрын

    Hi TheMaterano; your situation is a bit similar to a mutual friend of mine who has developed tinnitus following a flight abroad. Although his issue is more to do with a 6000Hz frequency noise in the right ear, your experience is obviously related in terms of the cause. I was recently talking to an older person I know (95 years old) who still plays the piano and enjoys music, BUT she relies on hearing aids. She explained to me the fact that hearing issues, though annoying and frustrating, take time to adjust to. This is good advice I believe. You can still enjoy music and sound, but have to learn to adapt, which means the brain needs time to 'learn' to process these new sounds. I am no expert of course, but the professor I liaised with helped me a lot, and he was right in regards to his advice to allow the brain 'retrain' itself. I have said this before - I don't expect my hearing to be as perfect as it was, and maybe it's the same for you, but you CAN adjust, and the brain CAN learn to process new sounds as 'normal'. Don't give up, and don't stop enjoying music; in answer to your question - listen to the songs (e.g the Beatles) that you always knew, and let the brain retrain itself accordingly. I cannot offer any guarantees, but can only speak from my own experience - keep enjoying music :)

    I am so grateful for you sharing your story. So very briefly, here is mine. A few months after getting a new acoustic piano to start playing again, I developed tinnitus in my left ear only. This was Sept 2022. In Jan 2023 it got worse and now some piano notes were distorting plus I was sensitive to some sounds (e.g. knife on chopping board). I had a clear MRI scan, but mild high frequency hearing loss like yours. Owing to the sensitivity, I started wearing a woolly had with ear defenders, the wool to let some mid to high frequencies through when I played the piano, but after a while stopped using it and seemed to cope better. Then in Jan 2024, after a mild cold (which may be coincidence), everything quickly got a lot worse. Most notes were now distorted, with the right ear as well as left, left being worse, hyperacusis a lot worse (sensitivity) and tinnitus far louder (still left ear only). I paid privately for ENT but was simply told it was age and exposure to 100dB (or 110dB) could be enough to cause the issues, but I was not exposed to such volumes (piano is 96dB peak). So now I am back to the woolly hat and ear defenders (not plugs), but hoping to see a specialist in hearing loss. Interestingly, the distortion sounds worse with quiet piano pieces than louder ones. I will keep you appraised of progress, but any comments most welcome.

  • @Songwriter74
    @Songwriter744 ай бұрын

    Thanks for contributing your experience. There seems to be so much that isn't known about the ears and the whole hearing mechanism. You seem to be taking matters into your own hands to some degree in order to mitigate the issue, which is great to read. That seems unusual with regard to how quiet piano pieces have a worse effect than louder ones, almost counter-intuitive. Would it be a case then, that if the same quiet piece is played louder, that the distortion is less severe? I am wondering if this is something to do with your more sensitive ears somehow compensating for the lack of volume by 'filling in' the missing sound/frequencies; just a thought. If this issue dissipates when wearing ear defenders, then it is a question of whether it is more a volume or frequency related issue. You'd have to experiment around other sounds i.e. pre-recorded music, notes played on, say, a guitar, day to day ambient noise etc, in order to get a clearer picture. I guess tinnitus is another problem over and above this, but again could be the brain making up for sounds that are not being processed properly.. I would say keep listening to music and sounds in as normal a way as possible, and perhaps see if this manages to help re-train the brain to hear these in this 'new' way, and 'ignore' the unwanted sounds - the same as any repetitive action results in a new skill becoming automatic. Best of luck and feel free to post an update.

    @@Songwriter74 Many thanks for your reply. I have since had another hearing test and seen a further consultant. I have also undertaken more research. On the matter of distortion, what appears to be the case is that playing quiet pieices allows the distortion to be that more obvious. Playing louder pieces, especially those that are fairly quick, almost seem to drown out the distortion so it is less obvious. It is still there, of course. As for the distortion itself, which continues to worsen, the best description is almost that it is like several notes, or perhaps frequencies would be more accurate, which are close together and at high pitch being played together. It is becoming worse with speech as well. On the hearing test, compared to a year ago, there is pretty well no difference, which was a surprise. The consultant said that my hearing, from the test, was better than average for my age. Having gone through the whole history with him, his conclusion was that there was nothing wrong with my ear, but that it was down to the auditory processing. Clearly I have tinnitus, but his diagnosis was also hypercusis. He did not feel it was recruitment and that the term dysacusis was a bit too none specific. As to what to do. He said there are no medical treatments he would advise, rather to speak to an audiologist and consider other therapies. He is referring me to one. He said I was in a loop where I would worry about the hyperacusis, and the more I worried, the worse it would get, which I would agree with. So things such as targeted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, maybe audio treatments etc. could be considered. He felt the distortion would reduce, but could not say that it would go completely. So, I will have to await meeting the audiologist. It was a very good consultation. To confirm it is not my ears was good, hence not having been able to get a prescription for Prednisone (GPs refused to prescribe it) was a relief. However, it seems like it will be a long journey back and I have to hope I will be able to make a near full recovery. As to what caused it in the first place, no one knows. There was no sudden event, whether a loud noise or anxiety/stressful one, but it appears there does not need to be. This makes me think that in your case you had an event that caused damage to part of your ear from which you just naturally healed, but again, how can one be sure. I will let you know how things go.

    Thank you very much for this useful video ! I have a problem since a few weeks with my SP-5600 piano. There are 16 consecutives keys that are not working anymore. Neither the sound, nor the midi signal. Do you have an idea of the defected piece ? Thanks a lot for your help !

  • @Songwriter74
    @Songwriter746 ай бұрын

    Hi, thanks for your comment. 16 consecutive keys not working does seem unusual - normally it is just a few. It is definitely worth cleaning underneath the keys themselves if your are able, which of course means gaining access to the inside of the keyboard. Just recently I had a bank of about 4 keys stop working on my SP4200, and had to clean the board under the keys in order to rectify this. Usually a combination of vacuuming and using a soft cloth will work, as it did in the above case. This does involve unscrewing the keys and removing the strip of rubber underneath, so I would only recommend this to someone who is confident in carrying out the job. The problem could be elsewhere, but this is the best starting point. Thanks & Merry Christmas.

  • @Songwriter74

    Hi, my opinion is that IEM's are best for offering simultaneous ear protection and monitoring; you just need to find the best ones for you. I think moulded ear monitors are the best, even though they are more expensive. Headphones are fine at home, but perhaps not the best for a 'live' situation where you want to feel 'part of the performance'. I use headphones at a low level occasionally at home still, but otherwise prefer to listen with 'room monitoring' - i.e. mostly hearing what the audience hears. Cheers
