Great review here. I am in a similar situation with the M2 iPad Pro 11-inch 8/256 and M2 MacBook Air 13.6-inch 8/256. Technically, my iPad has the unbinned M2 with 10 GPU cores while my MacBook has 8. I do all my serious work on my MacBook as it is just so much more reliable. You have stated some great points there so I often use the iPad on cramped spaces and the MacBook on a desk or on my lap. The iPad proves itself useful for graphics design, Procreate, notetaking, and even meetings but basically sucks at everything else. Some time ago, I decided to sell my Magic Keyboard as I feel it adds unnecessary bulk to my iPad. I feel like the iPad is never becoming a laptop replacement at least for me. I got a slim folio case for my iPad and I was so happy. Using the iPad as a tablet is such a liberating choice and I am never looking back. The iPad is better as a second screen and drawing tool as the keyboard is literally useless in that regard. It almost feels like I have to force myself to use it as opposed to my MacBook. Even my 11-inch iPad Pro M2 isn't that much lighter than my 13-inch MacBook Air. There is simply no reason for me to pick the iPad Pro over the MacBook for most of my work. In fact, 80% of my iPad usage is as a second screen for my Mac and the remaining 20% is a mix of drawing and notetaking, which is nothing intensive. I did try video editing with it, with or without the keyboard. It feels clunky and finicky. I don't make use of the touch screen as well. Apple showed how useful the Apple Pencil is for precise cuts but it is more or less useless. They should instead give users a more precise pointer.

I don't know for others, but if I am stranded on a deserted island with only the base MacBook Air or iPad Pro, I would go for the MacBook anytime. Yeah, the iPad is cool and all but I get frustrated really often trying to use it for serious work. The only use case for my iPad right now is graphics design, drawing in Procreate, notetaking, and sidecar. Stranded on an island, I don't need to take lots of notes and typing would definitely suffice. For graphics design, I usually use my Mac for finishing touches. For Procreate, that's fine but is it really that core to my workflow? No. Sidecar? No Mac, no second screen. Doing programming and video editing or even music production on the iPad is a hassle and even something as simple as browsing the web is frustrating. All apps you use on iPad are dumbed down in certain ways that you often slowly find things you cannot do efficiently or at all. No matter what Apple does on WWDC, even putting macOS on the iPad, it would still be inferior to the Mac. I can imagine how difficult it would be to run macOS on iPadOS if Apple made it possible. Might even involve some kind of reboot. I don't have high hopes for the iPad honestly. I love it for what it is currently and doubt any changes would make it any better. We often complain about the iPad, especially the iPad Pro but we aren't even the target consumer for that. I imagine some full-time digital artists can make it work or even some who can put up with the limitations of this powerful yet restricted device.

Really special Pro Pen drawing & writing experience for my work. Spit screen works great. File copy is fine with keyboard shortcuts on new M Keyboard.

Tech KZreadrs try not to compare an iPad Pro to a MacBook Air challenge: Impossible I started watching iPad Pro reviews from artists that use their iPads for work. They're a lot more interesting because they use their iPad Pros for what they're best for instead of just trying to use it exactly like a MacBook. Also because they're the ones that actually end up getting use out of the iPad's performance and ram since both affect the canvas size and how many layers you can have while drawing. If you can't decide between a MacBook Air and an iPad Pro, get the MacBook Air. If the work you're doing is basic enough that you think either device could work, the iPad Pro's never going to be a cheaper or easier alternative.

Let me start up by saying that I have all the Apple devices, iPad Pro Apple Watch, MacBook Pro AirPods. I've bought into this ecosystem, but one thing that's becoming very very clear to me is that Apple is the Scientology of technology they charge you so much money 💰 for things to get money out of your pocket, but they don't innovate as much so you don't actually feel good about the purchase. I'm starting to get very concerned that they've changed as a company. I'm also getting concerned that they're going to hold our data hostage and charges more money for everything. I never thought I would live in a world where I feel like would be a better option, but I'm starting to feel like that. The walls are closing on the walled garden. 🪴 and the customers like us will be eaten alive by them. since tablets have become so expensive I am planning on moving to the Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra. It's my only shot to have a tablet and a phone all at once and unlike Apple Samsung doesn't care to sell multiple devices. It would be nice, but that's not what they're trying to do. Apple cripples all devices so you have to buy them all to make things work. I didn't want to leave Apple but Apple has left me. @samsung @apple

It’s so fast and amazing and something a pc laptop can never replicate. I love using my iPad Pro for everything. And I mean everything except doing work on work programs for a company. Something I don’t want anyways ha. Writey, games, journaling, drawing, sketching, shows, movies, dolby vision, 5G UC, Dolby Atmos, GarageBand, Make a podcast, you can do everything on iPhone and iPad now days. I never touch my Mac ever now. It’s so behind and outdated without the apps I use.

Thank you for this video. For years I've been hearing that the iPad isn't up to the tasks done by a Mac but always gives video editing as the example. I'm not a video editor and don't plan to be so other than that I've wondered what the real differences were. You've done that excellently. I have both and both do what I want them to do but in my zone of tasks, the iPad is, for me, a laptop replacement and even more as the multiple form factors of tablet, laptop, touch screen, and pencil capabilities makes it the winner.

I went back and forth between the two. Two weeks ago I bought the m3 13” MacBook Air. I played with it for two days and returned it. Replaced it with the iPad and new Magic Keyboard. You have many valid points about the iPad limitations. However, I think a lot of those are more apt for professionals like yourself. I am retired and like to dabble in FCP and Procreate. With my desktop Mac mini and iPad I all my needs are met. I love the fact I can just detach my iPad and have the world at my fingertips in a comfortable position. Having said all that, this was the video I wish I could have seen weeks back. I hope more people find it when trying to decide. Let’s hope iPad OS 18 addresses some of the shortcomings. Great job!

I didn’t really understand the file transfer issue you were having. You have several options for selecting Files. Hitting the select key at the top and picking the files, clicking a free space and dragging a square (which i never use ) or what I use most often as it’s a touch interface along with a keyboard interface, long press a file then tap the other files you want to copy and drag across. If you hit the drop down in the folder title you will see what the size of the folder is, though i agree this could be in the status bar as an option along with the remaining device storage but that has never been a huge concern for me tbh. I grew up on windows and made the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard my main personal device about 3 years ago while still using windows for work. Got a M3 16” Macbook pro recently and honestly I find the window management so clunky compared to Windows and IPad OS. There’s so much customization and 3rd party apps needed to make the OS tolerable. Ipad OS may have its limitations but navigating it is intuitive, plesaurable and efficient.

Glad to see that you have actually shown the many, many limitations of iPadOS. The iPad Pro remains a niche, media consumption or presentation-oriented product. Amazing hardware, but with a severely simplified, limiting iPad OS software. You can not do any actual, serious work on it if you are a graphic designer or work in publishing. It is a complete joke. As you mention, sure, there are ‘baby app’ versions of certain industry standard tools, but you can’t even install fonts! 😂 You also can’t do any actual, serious retouching work on an iPad. You need actual Photoshop. Even if Photoshop worked the same way as it does on MacOS (it doesn’t), then you are impaired by the lack of a proper file management system like the Finder.
