    There’s a great app that will diagnose your plant problems. You just take a picture it will tell you the problem and how to fix it. There’s another that will identify plants for you too. Both apps are pretty cool.

    Most of the plants will grow outside here but some do not. To have a garden outside here requires an 8' deer fence. They will jump a 6' fence. Peaches are very hard to grow here outside.

    Good morning Lark. Thank you for the kind words. I have noticed earthworms in the green raised beds closest to the greenhouse wall, not so much in the purple beds. There are a lot of worms in the compost bin so when I add that to the garden next spring that should add a fresh load of worms.

    I am excited about the leaks I will buy organic garlic and then break the cloves up and plant them. Looking good you have made progress. In the shadiest part of your yard- I would make a mushroom fence or pile. Have seen people take timbre and drill into it and then inoculate it with a mushroom plug. Could celebrate the end of the mold watch with the creation of a fungus farm. After a year do you need to change your water filter in the crawl space?

  • @liveinagreenhouse

    I've actually been thinking about mushrooms but that's probably not going to be this year. Yes, I need to change the water filter. The house is on public water which is very high minerals. I've never changed a water filter before so this will be another learning experience.

    Good morning Shawn. I loved the tour. Yes, you can pick the nettle. I pick the top 5" or so. It will branch out and then I keep picking all Spring, Summer and still in early Fall. You don't want to pick once it goes to seed. Teas, soups, stews, eggs all taste great. Drying some for winter is also on my list for this year. I make a tincture from the dried, use a teaspoon daily to prevent my seasonal allergies. WOW, your raised bed soil are looking beautiful. Your peach tree is loving it's home. All your 'starts' in pots are doing fantastic. Wish I had an area of wild ramps. The flower area outside your office is absolutely gorgeous and wonderful for you to enjoy while working. Thank you for the indoor tour also. I like how you decorate with your accessories according to the seasons. I am so very happy for you Shawn. Hard work and determination. Take care and may peace, love and joy always be with you my friend. Lark

    It is becoming beautiful. Watching you build this has been such a blessing. I have often loved the homes built in the greenhouses in other countries and seeing in on a small scale is awesome. Watching the progress of learning what does well and how to grow in different conditions is very educational. So many channels are all about expensive inputs. They price most people out of the ability to try. Thank you for keeping it real with the success and failures. This is the best way to learn.

    Thank you so much! I enjoy figuring things out on my own with input from experts. Always have. This is the first big challenge that I've had an audience. @@liveinagreenhouse learning is amazing. The home will be breathtaking in a few years because of all the work you are putting into it now. Good morning, Shawn. Thank you for the tour. I always look forward to your updates. I, too, have the galvanized raised beds. I really like them, since I hoping in my life time I do not have to replace them. Filling them with great soil at the start is what I found to be very beneficial. Topping them off with 'free' chopped leaves has worked for me. We will see this Spring how much more compost and or chopped leaves I will add. I also am an advocate of the 'chop and drop' method with plants that are not diseased. My comfrey chopped or torn up is another addition to my raised beds, again free for me. The pool will be perfect for you this year, I am sending you positive vibes. You have worked so hard on everything. Good luck my friend. Namaste.

    Hi how much is it likely to cost you to keep dehumidifier on and how many hours a day are you intending to run it? Have you looked into thermal mass? I have a problem with humidity so am trying to find ways to reduce it without incurring costs, so looking at wind breaks, thermal mass and all sorts of other non matrix type solutions as dehumidifiers are just costing me too much. Good luck with it all.

  • @liveinagreenhouse
    @liveinagreenhouse4 ай бұрын

    Truth is I don't know how many hours per day it will run because this is all new to me; last year was the first full year living in the greenhouse and planting the food garden (west of the house) and ornamental garden (east of the house). It's set to cycle on/off based on humidity level. My guess is most of the year it will be needed only over night but during the winter it will be most of the day also. My power bill is really low so my concern is not so much the electricity cost as much as power outages. I haven't heard of thermal mass as a method of humidity control. I did a quick search and didn't find a basic description. Is there a website you recommend with more info?

  • @Divinefemininemiracles
    @Divinefemininemiracles4 ай бұрын

    @@liveinagreenhouse thermal mass heats during day releases heat at night, usually concrete, or earth, water, earthship houses use thermal mass a lot combined with greenhouse front , I am in a stone cottage with a giant inglenook but lot of damp, I have been experimenting with using stacked bricks, and ild fashioned soapstone hot water bottles and actually it did work, there are many greenhouse folk use water tubs in their greenhouses as thermal mass. Not sure how it relates to humidity. I only know the more warmth and convection I add the less humidity I have. I think I need a combination effect. You could add a wood stove also, looks like you have plenty of wood, my dream would be a house in a greenhouse but not possible in uk for various reasons. I have been learning everything I can about passive homes, also creating microclimates you name it. I refuse to just keeping whacking my heat on, cost of utilities in uk is utterly insane at present. Also insulating but heat storage / thermal mass seems like a real untapped resource to me..

  • @liveinagreenhouse
    @liveinagreenhouse4 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the reply! Now I get what you're saying. Yes, I'd looked at thermal mass in terms of heat management and that's one of the functions of the pool (once I get it filled). Air movement due to convection is very good when the ridge vents are open. I did not incorporate auxilliary heat in the greenhouse due to space constraints and cost. There are articles on my website explaining why I allocated the greenhouse space as I did and why I selected the heating and cooling that I did.

    Thank you! It is exceptionally well designed to feel much larger than it actually is. The kitchen, bathroom/laundry/shower, and bedroom are each a little less than 100 sqft and the livingroom is a little larger than 100 sf. To put it into perspective, a fact I point out during tours is the length from the refrigerator to the double door in the livingroom seems long (actual length is 18' 0") but I couldn't even park my truck in that space as a Toyota Tacoma extended cab with full length bed is longer than 18'.

    Good morning, Shawn. I enjoyed your update. Why are you raking all the leaves from the woods edge to your side walk? They are a great addition to adding nutrients to the area. I am very happy to hear that your tall trees did not come down on your greenhouse. We also had some nasty weather, a foot of snow, ice and high winds. I am ready for Spring. I feel your happiness with all the light that filters into your home from the greenshouse. Very little sunshine here in Wisconsin, dreary and cold. Like you, I find it a great time to organize, mend and iron. :0) The last six weeks I have been getting ready to move my Mom (she presently lives in my building) to the assisted living building. Days and days worth of bags of 'donations'. Scaling down is challenging when doing it for someone else. Almost done. Move is in a few days. I hope to get back to my painting and drawing soon. Take care and enjoy your LIGHT. :0)

  • @liveinagreenhouse
    @liveinagreenhouse4 ай бұрын

    Good evening Lark. The reason I want to rake those leaves is that's my septic drain field so I don't need nutrients or mulch there and there are so few leaves on my property I'd like to use those in my compost or mulch the dirt I spread next to the ramp. Sorry to hear about your mom. Yes, it is hard to downsize someone else's possessions. Especially when there are items of sentimental value. I hope you will soon be able to get back to painting and drawing. Regards, Shawn
