    well... LR was always good for photographers like me, changing cameras and systems regularly. No other tool was able to smootlhly process ALL of my photos. But then came Fuji and other tools showing better algorithms to decode the RAW files. And now came xt-5 which RAWs break Lightroom for me. I tried both classic and the modern versions - there are files that can't even be scaled down and exported - Lr keeps crashing. I don't make money on photography anymore, I don't have schedules and deadlines but experiencing 30 crashes an hour begs the question 'why do I even have you in my life???'. So I started the process of migration after 15 years away from Lightroom. Enough is enough.

    Ugh. That's got to be infuriating. I don't blame you. I am not in the X-Trans 5 file camp yet. Still happily using my X-T3 and 30. I thought they had ironed out all the 40mp file kinks. Guess not.

    @@seymourecarnage yeah... I'm testing DxO at the moment and Darktable. Long story short "I think I'm done with photography both as a profession and a hobby" so no I am looking for a smooth way to develop all of my raws into jpegs, save them all to my NAS and some other backup medium and be done with it. And it looks like Lr is not helping with the xt-5 raws (admittedly, Dx0 is having a blast with it :))

    Will simultaneousy monitoring & recording on the phone via a dongle be of good enough quality for 4k video ?

  • @seymourecarnage
    @seymourecarnageАй бұрын

    I'm not exactly sure what you're asking so I will answer both of my possible interpretations. 1. Monitoring will have no impact on the quality of the video recording. 2. If you're wondering if the quality of the monitoring footage will match/reflect the quality of the video footage, it will depend on the quality/capability of the display on your device, your settings, etc. Hope this helps.

    The capture dongle is less than $10. That's all you need to turn your phone or tablet into a monitor, as long your camera has compatible connections. I simply lay out the potential other costs you may run into depending on your circumstances or optional accessories you may or may not already own. I call out the worst-case total investment at 3:25.

    Interesting. I would think that would be a readily available item just about anywhere in the world. Alternatively you could get a long piece of 3mm bar stock or a cheap spool of 14ga galvanized wire from B&Q/HomeBase and use that for the frame. It wouldn't be as convenient but it would certainly do the job. Good luck!

    Not unless your phone has an HDMI port 😅. Seriously though, I'm not sure if any cameras are using USB-C to output video instead of HDMI, but if there are some I don't have an answer for you. That's why you need the capture card though. To take the HDMI feed and convert it to a datastream for USB.

    A rare criticism! However I’ve noticed on two of your videos, that when showing side by side, you a) use a cursor that is barely visible & b) the info distinguishing between the two is difficult to follow with the white writing in top left corner. A simple coloured arrow above each would do it or A. B. As colours are universal then the message is easier to follow! Love the humour captions!

    One of the worst purchases I ever made was a Kessler motorized slider. It was 2k and I have used it like 6 or 7 times. Gathering dust as you say, wonder if it has paid for itself? Probably not. The setup is so cumbersome that I rather use a steady hand and stabilize the wobble and bobbing in post for more than acceptable results. I managed to use the portable Bescor Battery on the kit for camera power which has come in very handy. Your living room shot was very well done, the only one that needs minor stabilization is the flower bouquet as there is some perceptible bobbing up down motion, easily fixed. Well done!

  • @seymourecarnage
    @seymourecarnage2 ай бұрын

    Yeah, in retrospect the cardboard box was a little too light and ended up wobbling a bit. Something heavier would have been 100% smooth. I wasn't going to do any stabilization in post and try to fake it. Thanks, 👑! Always good to hear from you!

  • @MarcusSortijas
    @MarcusSortijas3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for these cheap camera hacks. They really get the imagination flowing. I was wondering about doing tripod dolly shots on carpeted floors. Maybe one of those clear plastic office chair mats would provide a flat surface for using those furniture sliders? The mats they use in offices for chairs with wheels.

  • @seymourecarnage
    @seymourecarnage3 ай бұрын

    That is an excellent idea! I have tried various furniture sliders under the tripod feet but even on short carpet there's still some texture and "grain" to it which causes shake in the tripod. I even made a foamcore platform with sliders on the underside for better stability and weight distribution. It was better, but still a fry cry from good enough. Taking the surface out of the equation might just be the trick, though. The only catch is that a heavy duty tripod dolly costs about the same as a good chair mat, and offers more mobility, and would be easier to store. If you already have a mat it'd be a genius solution, though. Thanks for this!

  • @seymourecarnage
    @seymourecarnage3 ай бұрын

    You are familiar enough with the Fuji-sphere to know the XF 18 and 27 are the only real AF options, and then the various third party 27 copies. Since you're so video-centric I wouldn't recommend any of them. The 18 is one of the first year X mount lenses, and is not aging super well, and the 27 has a very slow/loud/clunky stepper AF motor. I hear the clones aren't much better. There's just no room in those tiny bodies for fancy AF drives. A manual lens would work really well, especially with a focus brake on the ring. Breathing is pretty minimal and the rings turn very smooth.

    I have been tethering for several years (X-Acquire & LrC). I use an inexpensive cable. I started with my X-T2, and although X-Acq and LrC are a bit tricky, I learned how to do it. Then this past Fall, I bought a used X-T3. I have found it extremely sensitive, because of the power mode in the X-T3 is a bit different (how, i'm not sure). Firstly, the X-T3 needs to be turned on BEFORE plugging in the cable from the computer. Secondly, if the power goes off or you turn the camera off during a shoot, the camera completely resets. I have to unplug it, set the language, time and date and all the other custom dial settings, then plug it in again. My X-T2 doesn't behave like that. I know it's not my X-T3, because I have tried it on two separate X-T3s. BTW, I enjoyed Stack of pancake lens video.

  • @seymourecarnage
    @seymourecarnage3 ай бұрын

    Yeah, the X-T3 is a finicky tether-er for sure. Interesting to hear that other bodies don't necessarily act that way. I appreciate that insight. That's wild that the camera's settings all get lost. That's typically a sign of the internal capacitor dying (another issue that is mostly endemic to the X-T3). Thankfully I have never had that happen. I have experienced the reconnecting issues for sure, though. Thanks for watching the pancake video. Glad you enjoyed it!
