Railcar Restorers

A dedicated channel to show and document the restoration process and progression of the Class 117 DMU's, DMS 51412, TCL 59520, and DMBS 51370 (Set L432), alongside other railway related content from working on other units/rollingstock, to visits of other railways where we try to delve a little deeper into there plans and aspirations for there working DMU's, as well as those under restoration and bring this information to you. If you'd like to help us with our project you can donate here: paypal.me/Michael51370?country.x=GB&locale.x=en_GB ,Every little helps as restoring an old unit like the three we have is a massive undertaking both physically and financially, so anything you are able to give is massively appreciated.

Really enjoy you output. These unsung workhorses are going to be crucial to most heritage lines in the years to come. It's great to see the learning curve developing to ensure the worst design weaknesses of 1st gen DMMUs are being sympathetically ironed out and the techniques being honed to ensure thorough restorations. I still think it a great shame you guys weren't around when all bar three carriages of the Class 103s purchased from BR bit the dust. They'd have been a first rate example of just about every design issue you've mentioned over the vourse of the series to date .. as well as being the best proportioned of the breed IMO.

Many thanks for the kind words Howard. Our aims is to do these units properly once and they shall last a life time as they will be properly looked after too. A 103 would be a lovely project and has been mentioned a few times but sadly unless a lottery win comes through, all of our spare time is going towards the 117. Once the set is complete then we have the task of overhauling spare parts which we will also document on video to show the ins and outs of keeping a unit running.

Very interesting video as I am trying to build a 0 gauge model of a 120 at moment. All the descriptions I have read suggest the ceiling was white but from the video that was clearly not the case. I worked on 120s from time to time back in the 70s and in particular remember the TRSBs still had the catering equipment including Stotts boiler and fridge still fitted even though, with the exception of Inverness and a few Cardiff based units, they had mostly not been used since 1962. Good luck with the restoration of one of the most comfortable units BR ever designed.

Are you still having to cope with asbestos infestation betimes? I recall - long before 1st gen DMUs had your team to provide much needed tlc - that being one of the two principal reasons we lost three nominally preserved Class 103 cars ..... that and some 'interesting' electrolysis courtesy of metals mismatches.
