Railcar Restorers on the road Ep5, DMU SOS! saving a cab from scrap at Strathspey.

In this episode, we endeavor on one mammoth journey of rebuilding a 117 DMU cab in 5 days and 500 miles away from home at the Strathspey railway. In this video we uncover swathes of rot and rust and find more work than we bargained for, so much so we nearly aren't able to finish the job we set out to do, from restoring the fiberglass dome that really had seen better days to rebuilding the framework and skin of the front, join us on this brutal task of rebuilding a near wreck back to its former glory in 5 days.

Great job done lads. It's exactly the same when restoring classic cars, you just never know what's there until you strip it back.

Absolutely amazing job! I wonder when loco’s, carriages and DMUs were first bought people knew just what they were getting into. So interesting to see the inner frames, panels etc. that quietly rot away over the decades while externally looking good. Hope you guys had a good rest after that, you deserved it 👏👏👏

Thanks Hazel it is amazing what hidden nasties these old vehicles uncover! Unfortunately no rest for the wicked as we are still pushing on with 51412 which there will be a video on in the coming weeks.

Thank you so much for all the work once again chaps it was great to catch up with you. Top quality work, she looks really good, the video doesn't do justice to the hours you all put in. Thank you also for the touching tribute to Iain, Bob and I still half expect to see him when we go into the centre car, he is greatly missed.

Great work guys, those fibreglass domes are a weak point. Although I don’t suppose they thought the railcards would still be working in 2023

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
