Sophie's Backyard Wildlife

Sophie's Backyard Wildlife

Sophie's Backyard Wildlife is about the wildlife I have the privilege of seeing in my backyard and my adventures with all the creatures that are my neighbors. I try to help and cure animals that need my help so we can all live happily together. I am so grateful to be able to share this wonderful experience with all of you!

So the bird people renamed the slate colored junco (perfect description) to dark eyed junco (stupid description since most birds have dark eyes) and they couldn't see fit to rename the red bellied woodpecker (stupid description since it doesn't have a red belly) to red hooded woodpecker (perfect description)? What's wrong with those birdbrains? (and I intended to write hooded instead of headed).

A little red on the chest. There is already a red-headed woodpecker (a lot more red) so I guess they had to find another name!🤷‍♀️😂

I stood on my deck and watched a Red-Bellied Woodpecker fly down and snatch a baby swallow. It was sad. I didn’t realize they would do that.

Nature can be hard at times. They will only do that if they have babies in the nest that lack protein. It is a rare instance, unlike blue jays, crows and many more that do feed on other species’ babies on a regular basis.

Cardinals are amazing at hiding their nest. I see a pair in my yard and bushes every year and they never build nest or they hide it so we’ll I can never find it. Would love to take a picture of baby Cardinals. One of my photo white whales.

  • @sophiesbackyardwildlife

You can use coconut oil if you live in a cold climate but it lots quickly. As for peanut butter, the birds really love it so I wouldn’t change that!

Plant enough bushes so they can hide and nest, sunflowers, dogwoods, trees with berries, try my homemade suet recipe, add a water source or bath… there are lots of things you can try!😀

@@sophiesbackyardwildlife Thank you so much! I’m a 20 year old from Louisiana. My family sent me to any and every local summer camp they could find when I was a kid. I remember them signing me up for a birdwatching camp at my local wildlife refuge one summer and I was not thrilled about it at the time😂 but ever since that camp, birds have become a HUGE interest of mine. I would spend hours trying to identify birds I would hear! Anytime there was a bird, I was looking for it. I even begged my mom to let me go back the following year! I don’t know why but I only recently started putting up feeders at my house 2 weeks ago and it has fueled my passion! I catch myself sitting in my backyard daily trying to identify the species that pass through! I even have a female cardinal who visits every morning outside my window at the crack of dawn!!! I’m mainly attracting cardinals and white throated sparrows. A few Carolina wrens every now and then! I’ve heard some new species recently but I can’t quite figure out what they are quite yet. I’m just super thrilled my passion has grown and I can’t wait to better educate myself!!!

Barred owls are expanding their territory west into BC and south through the Okanagan into Washington. I have wondered a couple times if I heard one. Now I'll be better equipped to discern its voice. Haven't yet clinched the ID of one. Thanks.
