I shake my head when I see situations like Tyla's and this 'backlash'. When there is infighting, colorism, caste systems, and the inability to recognize the different and shared black experiences; it sadly plays into white supremacy and internalized white supremacy. This should not be a controversy because blackness and being black exists across the world, cultures, phenotypes, etc & when can we all can educate ourselves on this without otherizing or stigmatizing each other because our experiences or words are/were different. Yes, that means more than just saying black Americans or African Americans don't get it, it is more complex than that.

The way he kept saying "I like that, I like that" was really creepy in a pedophile kind of way.

This topic about Tyla’s race the longer it is dragged the more it makes our fellow brothers and sisters in the Black American community looks bad. Coz Tyla has never said anything offensive but day in and day out BAs are complaining about her. It’s looking very bizarre and a bit like bullying and xenophobia

If black Americans would travel to places other then Vegas, Atlanta, & Jamaica non stop. Then maybe they would learn how things are outside of north America 😂

Not these ninja men and women pressuring Tyla to call herself black 😂😂😂 she’s mixed and that’s okay. Idk why black people want her to be black so bad. If y’all wanna claim her claim Charlize Theron, too. She’s South African too.

People are stupid 🙄 being called colored and black are NO DIFFERENT in American history, do the slightest amount of research in American history and that point is obvious (colored wasnt the only word used on bathrooms and restuarants to segregate! Blackness is viewed the same across the planet however its description is extremely nuanced and diverse not only compared to America culture but just in general. Brazil is another great example of this. ...basically what I'm saying is its problematic to be offended about something without even knowing what your offended about or for 🤷🏿

The Dream is always right next to Beyonce like literally always. I wonder what he means by “sanctuary” also. Cause him knowing exactly how to convey her thoughts and emotions in a song means he watches and knows A LOT!

Respectfully, Americans do not understand the complicated history of South Africa & the terms that were dictated by Apartheid. This is not about you, America. Race relations in SA will always be complicated. And the backlash Tyla is receiving is wholly unfair.

Let me explain that apartheid in SA ended in 1994 so compared to America, South Africa is in the "70s to 80s" where most young adults have been experienced that classification, segregation and discrimination but at the same time are trying to forge their own identity post-colonisation

White, Black, and Coloured are all terms colonizers invented to promote white supremacy. I think "Black" people should go back to being called African Americans, Afro-Latino, Pan African, etc.

She is not colored she is called Coloured, everybody is upset over what she is called in South Africa, it is different for black people around the world. Some people of color are Jamaican, Puerto Rican, Afro-Latino , etc. and they don’t what to be called black. If we want to get upset, get upset with the N word which was and still is directed at black people by whites as a derogatory term of hate, disrespect, was associated with lynching and is now considered a term of endearment by black people in America.🤷🏽‍♀️

AMERCANS ARE OBSESSED with making everything about RACE!!!!!! I am French (Paris) with African descents & have lived in NYC for 7 years and felt I had to justify/explain lot of things about my background/culture that would be LOGICAL/COMMON SENSE for the rest of the world. They are DEEPLY ignorant about other cultures. WHY should Tyla keep justifying herself or educate people. If you wanna know do your research!!!!!

  • @LaAerial

Relax. The “obsession” is because the construct of race was literally invented in the Americas to justify our enslavement. Historical context is key!

Black Americans still haven't realized, most Blacks outside of America don't want to be considered Black. There's such a negative stigma towards Black America, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves. I'm in my mid 40s, and when I was younger I would frequently visit African nations like South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, and etc. Back then, they had no problem at all referring to themselves as Black, even though other racial terms existed as well. Nowadays, they shy away from the label of being "Black".

When it comes up she should just say that it doesn’t mean exactly the same thing as it does in S Africa. Although the terms of race distinction in Africa, particularly SA, are also rooted in racism/apartheid. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Empressive actually was the first person I heard talk about Victoria Monet . After her review of the song 'on my mama' I had to go and watch the video for myself. Instant classic! And I'm so happy she won a Grammy too, well deserved. The video for 'Alright' is great too, which I'm glad because ' on my mama' was such a cultural phenomenon, I'm sure it was challenging for she and her team to try to come up with a video just as visually stunning, but she killed it. Especially the Choreography. In fact I honestly think some of the special effects detract from the choreography, but that's just me being picky ...it's still a great video 💯🙌🏾😌

I feel like she should have a safe space to do so! Charla started the interview off with negativity if you watch it from the very beginning and he kept trolling her the entire time. Simply because she had already came with questions. She did not want them to askher which breakfast club hates from their guests. Also, we shouldn’t really normalize, not asking artist to explain stuff like this. It doesn’t need to be there wheel House

Race and ethnicity are always going to be a controversial topic especially in America. Tyla should have said what she put on the internet during the Breakfast club. She is right … she is a colored woman. She is not from America she is from South Africa. Over there she is a colored woman. That’s it.

Tyla does need to explain cuz she said herself she knows in America it’s a derogatory word. It’s not just black ppl that would feel uncomfortable it’s white ppl too-no pop radio DJ wants a sound bite of him/her going around calling a black person “colored” Tyla and her team has had this question before-too many times to not have a prepared answer. Personally, I don’t think Tyla and her team wanted her to be seen as black but as racially ambiguous but they realized the America white audience saw her as black and had to switch audience targets now black ppl are clocking it and they are doing damage control. If Tyla wants the Black American support then she does need to adjust her lingo and just say biracial/multiracial. It’s crazy many SA want Black Americans to change our perception of the word for Tyla when she is entering America. Nope, Tyla needs to Show respect to culture, history, to Black Americans because she is entering in our space.

My people need to make up their minds. We have taught the world to say "Black, Brown, and People of COLOR" We said (COLOR) to include people who are non-black and non-white but have somewhat melanin. We always think of others but never ourselves and every time get bitten in the ass by other groups. We get mad at the wrong shit! But anyway, I love my people. But we need to get it together.

It’s a toughie for Tyla. ‘Colored’ people had more privilege than ‘blacks’...not very dissimilar from what goes on today. It’s very easy to offend black people whilst at the same time addressing a very sensitive issue. They should just train her on it. She’s definitely the first South African superstar I have seen hit mainstream like this since Charlize Theron so it would be nice to learn more about her history and experience. Anyways white people are a plague of hatred on this earth honestly. Just watching the beginning of that segment I was just wtf. They still at it smh.
